Updates and Rumours from around the League

On a completely seperate note, I can see a lot of team making some desperate moves in the offseason -- EDM, VAN, PHI, NJ etc. Possibly SJ if they get knocked out in 2nd round again.

With the amnesty in play as well, it should be interesting.

we definitely seem to be at one of those turning points where a whole bunch of good teams are reaching the end of their window (DET, SJS, VAN, NJD, DAL) while a whole bunch of younger teams are making a push towards perennial contender status (TOR, OTT, MTL, NYI, STL)....while at the same time there's a number of perennial bad teams that might have reached their patience limit and want to make big moves (EDM, CAL, TBL, FLA).

defnitely potential to see some big movement around the league this summer, especially with a new CBA, and a whole whack of complaince buyouts coming up.

im also curious if this salary cap trading increases the number of trades

Montreal isn't part of the next phase. They're subpar with the exception of a couple of players. At least at this moment.

nah, mtl has some old pieces, but they have a nice young core with Galy, Gally, Patches, Eller, Subban, Price and a good system supporting that.

1) Toronto fans, IMO, are tougher on defenseman than any other position and probably any other fanbase. See Larry Murphy, Bryan McCabe etc.
2) Dion has a reputation stemming from his later Calgary days of not being very good defensively and it's especially hard to change casual fans' opinions of a players once they become a part of the narrative. And it's even harder to change casual non-Leaf fans' opinions of a player once they become a Leaf. See Kessel still being referred to as a "one-dimensional sniper" even though he has a huge amount of assists and his playmaking skills have emerged as fantastic. People get stuck in their views and it takes a long time and a lot of effort to change that.

Couldn't agree more.

Yeah I was surprised to see that comment about the Habs. I can see not thinking they're a perennial top 4 team or anything, but they definitely have a decent looking future as of now.

Galchenyuk Subban Price are a fantastic start to any franchise.

The Habs need to replace some of the smurf vagines they have on the team and they'd be playoff contenders for years.

Galchenyuk in my eyes has Kopitar-type upside.

DD has been brutal.

Apparently Gionta has an excuse....but ya start with those two

Yeah, this is what your 25 and under team looks like right now

MaxPac-Galchenyuk-Collberg
Bozon-Eller-Gallagher
Hudon-Bournival-Holland
Whoever-Leblanc-Kristo

Beaulieu-PK
Tinordi-Weber
Dietz-Thrower

Price
Tokarski

Just for the sake of argument......

JVR-Kadri-Kessel
Leivo-Colborne-Frattin
D'amigo-McKegg-Biggs
Ross-Toninato-Ashton

Gardiner-Rielly
Finn-Franson
Blacker-Percy

Reimer
Owuya

*edit* Forgot Franson, who is still only 25

Yep. And Franson and Gunnarsson also just in their mid-20's. You'd never think Gunnarsson is just 26, the guy plays like a veteran. Good young core of very talented defensemen there.

For "not a rebuild", Burke stocked the cupboards pretty darn well.

Holzer, Ryan, Blacker, D'Amigo, Sparks, Devane, Carrick, Ross, McKegg, Percy, MacWilliam, Rielly, Broll, Biggs, Leivo all Leaf draft picks on that Marlies team that smoked their first round opponent + Finn, Rupert, Brown, etc.

I expect the patient Nonis to continue that.

Emelin too. His loss was felt far more than people realize.

I'd probably replace Weber with Magnus Nygren (22 year old winner of the 2012-13 Borje Salming award as best dman in the SEL)
I suppose Brady Vail could replace "whoever."

But yeah, for an all 25 and under team that's not bad at all, especially if a Bozon or Collberg can live up to potential.

If we could replace DD and Gionta with 2 big mean forwards we could definitely tilt the scales a fair bit. It ain't gonna happen but if we got rid of those two and replaced them with Clowe and Clarkson via free agency... that would be sweet.
