General Leafs News & Notes

Batman >> Superman

Batman being a unflappable character with great instincts and battling skills.

Superman being a great athletic player but can become unstable quickly.

I think that, in general, you vastly over estimated how important athleticism is to a goaltender. Composure, technique, angles, anticipation....all significantly more important. I'd go further in saying that had Allaire not dicked about with his glove hand on a technical level, it would be a fair bit better than it currently is as well. I expect it to get better as he continues working on it....
Agreed completely, other than the Allaire thing. The reason he was never highly touted in junior was because of his lack of athleticism.. Allaire didn't cause that. But yeah, you'd have to be blind to think he is very athletic compared to most goalies. He is positionally sound, reads the play extremely well, normally has strong rebound control, and has a strong as hell lower body (which helps negate the lack of athleticism.. you often see him stretch his leg out, as players jam away at the puck/his pads and he barely budges).

yes you were. you claimed Reimer was "unathletic" and laughed repeatedly at those who disagreed with you.

quit being a ****ing baby.
I was right about that. I was wrong in thinking that he won't become an NHL starting goalie because of it though. And if being a baby means getting extremely excited over being wrong, then I completely agree with that.

Trying to figure out what goalies will succeed based on their "strengths" and "weaknesses" is a fool's errand. scouts can't do it, GMs can't do it, we can't do it.

Just look at save percentage. it's much easier, and much better.

one caveat - also look at how big a goalie is.being too small is a big weakness in net, and can undermine good save percentage numbers in the minors.

I'm not sure there's even a correlation between size and save percentage. Among the top career save percentage guys, there's plenty who are 6 feet or under. It may well be that 6 feet or unders are overrepresented among career save percentage leaders.

That's really not true actually. Thomas is the only sub-six footer out of the entire top twenty list and he's only a shade under the mark.

He's a career leader in save percentage.

Save percentage is a very good tool but it's not the end all and be all of goalie evaluation, as many like to make it.

I'm stunned he's there.

Though judging by the majority of names on that list, it's a pretty solid stat to go by. Some awesome goaltenders there.

Nothing is the be all and end all. But other than save percentage, the other stats a goalie is measured by are much more closely related to team performance, as you know.

He was really good in his three seasons with the Flyers and then fell off the map. Definitely an anomaly - late bloomer who is really good for 3 seasons and then fades after his 31st birthday.

It's most definitely the best stat to measure goalie performance. Some things cannot be quantified though, so there's a limitation to all statistics.
