General Leafs News & Notes

Yeah, the Oilers are probably a better target. If you can get one of those young forwards for a reasonable price ....

I don't want any of their young forwards. I want to draft one of the big centers available in this year's draft with their top 10 pick.

Of course I'm serious. I watched the series. Please expound on how that tells us that we need to upgrade at centre.

because we got dominated? because we are one of the weakest teams in the league at one of its most important positions?

again, I can scarcely believe you would ask the question.

You can't make assessments without considering that we have players that may improve and are likely to do so. How they might have performed in that series is by no means the only thing you use to assess them. What I saw was one very young guy struggle with the playoff intensity (Kadri), another play very well despite extremely limited opportunity previously (Colborne) and another step up his game immensely over his regular season play (Grabovski). Finally, McClement played solidly, as expected.

So? This is not impressive in the least, even if one agreed with all your assessments.

McClement was fine but is best suited on the 4th line at even strength. Grabovski was -10 and an absolute liability against the Bruins as well as being terrible all season, so I have no idea what you're talking about there. Bozak is Bozak. I'm not sure Kadri's problem was playoff intensity so much as it was a 15-20 game slump, but we'll see if we make it again next year.

Colborne doesn't have a lot of skill. He's not going to be the 2nd line centre on this team, if that's what you're suggesting.

I can scarcely believe that you believe that. Faceoffs is merely one dimension of playing centre, fyi.

funny, I don't even see the word faceoff in there anywhere...although now that you mention it, losing 8 of every 10 draws didn't exactly help us win anything.

I'm all or Stastny.

The thing that is ****ing us up is Grabs. Amnestying him is a risk, keeping him is a problem. If he was the unrestricted one, we'd be in a great spot.

Could make Kadri the 1C, let Bozak and Grabs go, and gamble on Stastny, while letting Colborne get his shot on the third line.

I don't see amnestying Grabovski as a risk at all...worst case scenario for us, he goes elsewhere and bounces back to the player he was...which isn't really worth 5.5 and a huge risk for 4 more years. The risk is in not amnestying him to be honest....we can't depend on him as a 2nd line centre, and frankly as his play in the playoffs showed imo, he's not very good in the defensive zone and not really an ideal 3rd line defensive matchup centre.

Krejci also lit us up like a Christmas tree...13 points in 7 games. It wasn't just in the faceoff dot that the Bruins centres dominated us.

and another step up his game immensely over his regular season play (Grabovski).

Grabovski was complete shit...a special level of abysmal shit against the Bruins. Some people always did love him when he was running around, looking quick and impressive while doing nothing.

Yeah, his hustle stepped it up a few notches, and he was willing to take a beating to compete...props for that and all, but the product of that effort was pure crap.

Now, Krejci has been a good 2-way hockey player with decent playoff numbers...but there is no ****ing way he puts up 2ppg in a series without a serious lack of performance from the opposing centre.

Don't see where you get this from, from his limited action.

I see that he has a lot of raw skill, and certainly, when healthy, he has produced like a top player in the minors.

he's got 1 point thru half a game vs. the Rangers tonight.

and krejci rattles it off both the crossbar and post to just miss his 2nd point of the night.

I've seen solid skating and stick handling ability from him....but I've yet to see him do anything with the puck that suggests the high level hockey IQ of a potential offensive stud. Actually, that's been the thing I've been most disappointed in so far...his thought process seems a step or two behind the play.

Completely agree with this.

Yup, while we were in the series, I was admiring his compete level. But looking back, compete or not, the guy's total lack of offense and -10 was probably one of the worst playoff performances in a round that there's ever been from a guy who is somehow the highest paid forward on his team.

Rielly is better than anything we'd get a 7.

Rielly for Drouin or MacKinnon, now that's something that would be interesting.

I highly doubt any of the top 3 picks would make that deal. Even though it might be fair i feel like recently drafted prospects have the new car syndrome... the second you drive off the lot you lose 20% value.
