Canes Sign Petr Mrazek

I had a feeling we'd end up with either Mrazek or Mason. Honestly, I'm not fond of either one, but we HAD to do something different. I mean, the thing with Mrazek is that he had a really good career going up until the wheels fell off a couple of years ago. Regular season, playoffs, whatever ... he was solid. But when Detroit's defense fell apart, so did he.

Here's hoping for the best, I guess. The term is short and the cost is reasonable which indicates that the player is willing to take on a "show me what you've got" contract. I like that. He's still only 26, and only a couple of years ago was considered one of the backups most likely to break through to be a long time starter.

And make no mistake. Carolina still stinks in net. We need a massive rebound season from one of two guys who were abject garbage last year.

This is just a train wreck waiting to happen. There is nothing proven with either goalie at this stage in their career. Mrazek was bad in Detroit and he was a bust in Philly. Darling is trying to prove himself after last season, but I see nothing that says this signing is going to challenge Darling and force him to compete to start. I really hope Darling is the guy out the gate, but hope is not a method and that's what the front office has given us-- nothing tangible to instill confidence just a bunch of hope in a half-assed way...

I'm not sure that was a "proven" option on the table, SS. If that's the bar then whoever the Canes got today was going to be well short. Actually, I'll amend that ... there absolutely was not a proven winner in net on the table today. So ...

I will second the "at least it's only 1 year for small money". That is the only thing I see as a positive with this signing.

Not that there were a lot of options, but we have completely half assed efforts to ensure our goaltending doesn't continue to kill us.

If it's the 2012-2016 Mrazek, we'll be fine with it. The last 2 years though, oy.

I used the word "proven" because that's what Waddell said...

Agreed. I just don't want to hear a lot of "______ would have been better" or "we should have just kept Ward" because ... there was nobody any good in the market and if Ward hasn't proven he's not the answer then God help us all.

Mrazek and Darling ranked 49th and 84th in save percentage, respectively.
(For goalies with 20+ starts. )

See? The Hurricanes front office is giving us all kinds of hope!

"I hope Darling surprises us all and plays like a beast!"
"I hope Darling redeems himself."
"I hope Darling can stay healthy and we don't have to play Mrazek!"
"I hope Darling has learned to stop a puck with his glove!"
"I hope Mrazek brings his game from two years ago!"

I could be wrong but I see this as a terrible signing. Better goalies were available.

Well that hope and a Quarter won't get you a cup of coffee...
I think we should get Dundon to buy a white horse. We really need a Miracle.

Waddell says he’s done, except for re-signing TVR, which he says is close.
