Habs sign Mark Streit to one-year, $700k deal

Streit is fine as long he's not Markov's replacement.

Well there are quite some bodies on D now

If MB was confident he was getting Markov back he wouldn't have signed Streit.

I don't think Streit is to replace Markov in terms of role but we now have 8 NHL dman

Joe morrow can go to the ahl.

And I didn't say he was. But Zaitsev is a top 4 d-man, and he's not 38 years old. If Jarabek can do that here, and MB uses some of that cap space on a top 6 center, then we don't need a Markov replacement who is as good as Markov.
A left handed version of zaitsev is absolutely a top pair defenceman beside Shea Weber.

That said im not convinced in my viewings that jerabek is as good as zaitsev.

Weber
Alzner
petry
Benn
Shlemko
Davidson
Streit
Jerabek

Davidson could go to the AHL, or Streit or Jerabek, or one could be traded.

Lots of options. You don't let your 7/8 D prevent you from signing a guy for the top pair.

As Marc Dumont suggested, Streit might simply be insurance if Jerabek's game doesn't translate.

The question is , for that salary why didn't Streit just go back to Switzerland. He has to sweat out an 82 game schedule for just 700 K. He can maybe play half the games for 400 K , no tax, car incentives etc..en Suisse.
