New York Yankees

The New York Yankees are a professional baseball team based in the borough of the Bronx, in New York City, New York and are a member of Major League Baseball's American League East Division. One of the American League's eight charter franchises, the club was founded in Baltimore, Maryland in 1901 as the Baltimore Orioles, and moved to New York City in 1903, becoming known as the New York Highlanders before being officially renamed the "Yankees" in 1913. From 1923 to 2008, the Yankees' home ballpark was Yankee Stadium, one of the world's most famous sports venues. In 2009, they moved into a new stadium, also called "Yankee Stadium"... The franchise is the defending World Champion of Major League Baseball and lead the League in both revenue and titles, with 27 World Series championships and 40 American League Pennants. They have more championships than any other franchise in North American professional sports history, passing the 24 Stanley Cup championships by the Montreal Canadiens in 1999. Throughout the team's history, the franchise has produced some of the most celebrated players in Major League history, including Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, and Yogi Berra. The franchise has seen 44 of its players inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, and the Yankees have retired the numbers of 16 of its players... The Yankees have achieved widespread popularity and a dedicated fanbase, although they have acquired a polarizing reputation for their heavy spending in pursuit of winning. Their rivalry with the Boston Red Sox is arguably the fiercest and most historic in North American professional sports. To support the Yankees and expand their media coverage, the dedicated television channel YES Network was launched in 2002, and it has become a large source of revenue for the franchise.

I don't mind him really, he just always goes on and on about the same little things.

so earlier i was wondering why it looked like girardi was wearing a grill. cause i'd never noticed it before. when looking it up, i found a pretty cool story. i guess i know why the yankees won the world series now... god sent girardi to new york city to set a good example for the 8 million heathens.

Take a close look at Joe Girardi's mouth. Why would a grown man wear braces, specifically during the one month of his life when he's most likely to be on national TV? A pretty sweet reason, actually.

He's obviously somewhat self-conscious about it, seemingly making an effort to keep them covered in public (See here for a typical photo). But what would possess a man with perfectly fine teeth to turn into metalmouth at age 45? A promise to his daughter.

Buried deep within this amateurish local station's "blog" (this is the kind of stuff they're going to be charging for, people), is the story of how Girardi's then-5-year-old daughter was scared of getting braces, so he made her a deal: if she needed them, he'd get them too.

So little Serena's teeth got all crooked, and Papa Joe lived up to his end of the bargain. That's adorable. Almost makes me forget that Damaso Marte and Jerry Hairston have no business being on a major league field.

SOMETHING SPECIAL: According to the Elias Sports Bureau, when Mariano Rivera made his first appearance of the season last night, he, Derek Jeter and Jorge Posada became the first trio of teammates in MLB, NFL, NBA and NHL history to play together in 16 straight seasons. Jim Gantner, Robin Yount and Paul Molitor played together for 15 seasons with the Brewers. Two different trios of Yankees played together for 13 straight seasons, Bill Dickey, Lefty Gomez and Red Ruffing from 1930 to 1942, and Whitey Ford, Elston Howard and Mickey Mantle from 1955 to 1967.

Not sure.

MLB isn't too friendly with allowing their games to be shown online elsewhere.

Premium: $119.95 for the year; $24.95/month.

A little thing I found on our top prospect, Jesus Montero:

Jesus Montero has a strange habit of talking about catching when heís asked about hitting.

Certainly, itís because he has a point that he wants to stress: Heís a catcher. He wants to be a catcher. Heís working hard to be a catcher. And that job comes before anything he does offensively.

But on nights like Tuesday, it can be difficult to forget what got him so far, so fast, in pro ball in the first place.

That bat.

He waited four at-bats against Rochester pitching to extend his hitting streak to six games, but he did it when the Yankees absolutely needed him to do it ó with runners on second and third, two outs and his team a run behind on the scoreboard.

Ironically for a 20-year-old who has looked a bit anxious at the plate all season, Montero succeeded because he took a veteran approach with him to the plate. Red Wings lefty Jose Lugo faced Montero in Mondayís game, ultimately walking him. But he attacked Montero with fastballs, and Montero remembered it. So he went to the plate in the eighth inning on Tuesday looking for a fastball. First pitch, he got one ó and he hit a hard chopper into left field.

I asked Montero about that at-bat, and in typical Montero fashion, he wound up talking a lot more about helping the team with his pitch calling, and that working with the staff all season has really paid off. Heís right on both counts. Look, catching isnít just about throwing out potential basestealers. Itís about handling the staff and calling a good game. Montero seems to at least be progressing on the later point. Opponents have tried to steal just four bases against him this season. Granted, they were successful every time. But they have only tried four. From my seat in the press box, itís not that Montero doesnít have a decent arm. Itís that he has a really long delivery that just takes too long to complete to have any real impact. To put it in terms football fans can understand, Montero does exactly what Tim Tebow did at the University of Florida.

Besides that, though, Montero has actually been a decent defensive catcher, one who has called the right pitches and guided a staff that has been, all in all, a success story this season. Tuesday night, he guided Ivan Nova through seven terrific innings. He has also been working well with the relievers like Boone Logan, Mark Melancon and Jonathan Albaladejo who have been instrumental in the three Yankees wins this season.

Really wish this series would have been three day games.

With the Habs opening up the playoffs tonight, I'll be concentrating more on that.

I'll still have the ball game on but I won't be 100% focus. Oh well.

Go Yanks!
