That Monahan kid is looking great.

If he's the real deal Burke may get the Flames into the playoffs sooner than the Oilers.

Teams will start to key on Monahan more. He's a good young player but come on, no way he sustains that.

And Hudler? Really? No way he does either.

Ottawa's obviously adjusting to new people entering their lineup, but their "D" has looked pretty ploddish the past few games. San Jose was buzzing all over them, close to 50 shots against. Hot Karl will probably revert to form pretty soon though.

KingTucker

Also, who should I get on my Winter Classic Heritage jersey? Clark? Gilmour? Apps? Sittler?

JaysCyYoung

I was going to go period appropriate: Horner, Bailey, Clancy, Jackson, Primeau, Conacher are good options IMO.

San Jose had this great start last season as well.

Part totally deserved, part soft. But regardless, it's hard to win games when you are killing at minimum 5 penalties a game - ignoring that you are always killing more than you are enjoying.

The standings right now are absolutely wild.

Leafs first, of course, which is awesome. Sens struggling bad. Habs maybe finding their way a bit.

But then look at the other division. NYR, NJ, Phil, and Washington are a combined 3-16-3!

Philly has scored 8 goals in 6 games - we scored 6 in the last one. NJ doesn't have a win. Buffalo winless in six. Colorado undefeated and 18-4 goal differential.

Totally wild shit going on so far.

I've thought for a long while that the talent on Philly (forwards) and NYR (defensemen) has been wildly overrated, so I'm not shocked to see them stumble.

The Metro division is looking pretty lame early in, despite having a cake travel schedule.
Seems to me that it's possible that the 6th place team in the Atlantic division could finish with more points than the third place team in The Metro division, but still miss the playoffs. So, pretty much the same situation as it being a tossup some years whether the winner of the Southeast division had more points than the 9th place team.

yeah, pacific is a juggernaut, but atlantic is damn tough too.

the west has more fluky bigtime overachievers at the moment - COL and CAL in particular.

You mean even wider that they are now?

(complete side note, I did some work in John Candy's house way back (obviously) and all the doorways in his house were custom widths, said it made him feel smaller.)

Yep. We'd been doing some carpet over the week, and one day they just told us we weren't going back...got the news later that day. If I had known he was going to never come back I might have scooped a poster or something. :eek6:

Looks like the Sens have had a tough sched so far, the Habs a soft sched, and the Leafs somewhere in between. Though there's only a handful of games to go off of, so conclusions are dodgy at best.

Wait what? Soft Schedule?

Okay then. It hasn't been the hardest but it is no softer than the other two teams. They headed out west too.

You aren't taking into consideration where the opponent was ranked at time of game.

I'd have to run the numbers, but I doubt playing the 2nd game of a back to back is nearly as unwinnable as some suggest it is, especially this early in the season, when most teams are still relatively healthy and fresh.

You guys have had a tough start sure but you need to play all these teams anyways.
If I were you, I'd be more concerned with the continuous stream of undisciplined penalties from guys like Neil, Gryba and company and that Karlsson's still missing some footspeed out there. He got walked all game by the Ducks in his own end.

The Sharks are going to be on the tail end of a back to back Sunday (Montréal tonight) so this is a great chance for the Sens to get two points before going to Chicago. There really aren't any excuses at this point. Most of your players are already familiar with each other and with Coach MacLean's system. The difference is teams aren't taking the Senators lightly and are going after them with gusto and energy so they don't allow a late game comeback.

Man, that metro division looks turrible this year. Though I assume that Washington picks it up at some point, they're the only one out of that mess (other than Pittsburgh, obviously) that doesn't really have a glaring hole.

leafman101

Pitt pretty much has a free pass to the conference finals while the Atlantic is beating up on each other.

Or wait how does the cross over work? If the season ended today would they have to play Detroit in the first round?

hockeylover
10-31-2013, 12:06 PM
Division winner with the most points in their conference plays the wild card team with the fewest points.
Division winner with the 2nd most points plays the wild card team with the most points.
Second and third place in both divisions play each other.

Sooooo... if the season ended today based on actual standings:

Toronto Boston
Pittsburgh Detroit
Tampa Montreal
Carolina NY Islanders

If the season ended today based on Zeke's REAL standings:

Toronto Detroit
Pittsburgh Montreal
Tampa Boston
Carolina NYI

At least as far as I can tell. It's kind of a confusing format though I think for the average fan.

I think playing someone too much hurts a rivalry. It becomes just another game, at least in the regular season.

I like the soccer approach. Teams play each other twice (in most leagues), 1 at home, 1 at home and the games really matter.

Still the only two games that really sting are the 2 losses to bottom-10 teams - the bernier own-goal to lose the Carolina game, and that debacle vs. the Blue Jackets.

In football and soccer, I agree.

...but when I was a kid and we played Detroit all the time that rivalry was the greatest.....when things changed and we only played them every once in a while, it meant nothing.
I'm looking forward to rekindling the rivalry with Detroit. It was just flat out wrong that we only played them once a year and sometimes never. Mind you, I feel the same about Chicago and we'll only see them infrequently still.

Leafs have a lot of winnable games left in Nov that they need to take advantage of because Dec's schedule gets a lot tougher. Although, they have a lot of home games in Dec which helps.

Nov:
vs Nashville
vs Washington
vs Columbus
@ Pittsburgh
@ Buffalo
@ Montreal

Dec:
vs San Jose
vs Dallas
@ Ottawa
vs Boston
vs Los Angeles
@ St. Louis
vs Chicago
@ Pittsburgh
vs Florida
vs Phoenix
vs Detroit
@ New York Rangers
vs Buffalo
vs Carolina

Despite the Leafs struggles, we're also only 2 points out of second in the division. And you have to think losing Stamkos will eventually catch up to the Lightning.

Yeah, we're...okay at the moment. What's "saving" us is that Ottawa is far behind us, while some of the teams trailing us are competing for a Metropolitan Division spot, so they'll bump down their competitors as well. Still, it would be really nice to get 4-6 points over the next five games. It's looking ugly out there with the Sharks, Bruins and Kings down the road.

Nowhere in any pre season predictions did they mention the fact that the Leafs would be sporting 3 AHL centres through a slump. It was all Corsi this, possession that, lucky leafs bullshit.

Do they have holes? Sure, like every playoff team other than the top 2-3 teams in the league, they have holes. But to pretend that rolling with 1 NHL calibre centre for most of November isn't front and centre in the Leafs struggles is beyond disingenuous. As bad as November was (4-7-3), you're telling me that we don't squeak out a few extra points, turn some OTL's into wins, some L's into OTL's or wins if Bozak & Bolland are in the lineup instead of Smith, Holland, Smithson?

"man games lost" is a horseshit stat. It works under the presumption that games not played by Ryan White are = to games not played by Markov.

I love that these guys will strangle logic within an inch of it's life to support arguments that looked really, really wrong for 60 or so games. The Leafs have played at a 69 point pace over the past 13 games, after playing at a 98-100 point pace over the previous 60+, but because those 13 games support their argument, **** the data set that is 5x larger, amirite?

Hard to win games with Bozak-Smith-Holland-Smithson as your centres. By overall ability, that's our #3, 5, 6, & 7 centres in the organization.

But it's our fault for not having a pile of NHL ready, talented centres in the organization like everyone else in the league #medialogic

See I disagree with that somewhat. When we had Moen and Prust out our fourth line was losing us games. -2, -3 on some nights. You build a team according to your model, when pieces are missing it does affect the team. Moen-White-Bournival > Blunden-White-Parros

exactly, eight guys out is eight guys out. Sure it is worse if they are your top 8 guys but that is rare. Every starter out means someone weaker is playing therefore the team suffers.

One could argue that missing Emelin was not that big a deal given three guys played more but since he was the most physical guy on D, his loss was big as it required Diaz55 and Tinordi to play more in the playoffs than one would want and that hurt the team.

There's a huge difference between your 4th line allowing a few more goals than a competent 4th line would, and your offence drying up because you're missing core players. Which of course, means that you end up playing those shitty 4th liners more anyway, as you've already shifted your good 4th liners higher in the lineup to fill the spots of the good players you're missing.

Except once we got our bottom line guys back the Habs have allowed 2 or fewer goals in the past 7 games. We were losing games 4-3 before.

I'm not disputing losing Pacioretty is worse than Moen, what I am saying is that a team is built a certain way and when you lose lesser players it hurts as well. Espeially on a team like the Habs when those lesser players are also our grit players.

I think they're saying he might play but he's been banged up for a while - I'm guessing it's that wrist he's got wrapped up.

That said, we've been really undisciplined and we need to play better regardless. The team doesn't get absolved of responsibility and I don't think anyone's saying that - it's just frustrating that the "LEAFS R LUCKY!" crowd from when we were playing really well are patting themselves on the back.

You people are stunned.

Follow me for a second, and I'll use a Habs example.

If your left wing situation looks like this: Pacioretty - Galchenyuk - Bournival - Prust

and Pacioretty gets hurt, now it looks like this: Galchenyuk - Bournival - Prust - Moen. You're really trying to argue that swapping out Moen for Pacioretty is the same as swapping out Moen for Prust?

Give your ****ing head a shake

Basically you're arguing that depth players are as hard to replace as core players and that's patent nonsense on it's face.

Of course it hurts as well, your 3rd and 4th liners are by definition the 7th-12th best forwards on your team and swapping them out for players who didn't make your team will make those units weaker. However, that pales in comparison to losing core players, absolutely pales. Markov for example was an epic loss for the Habs over those few years where he couldn't tie his skate laces without ending up out for 6 months with a knee surgery.

Unreal. Twilight zone type shit.

A good 4th line is definitely an asset (trust me, I'd kill for one right now, I can't stand our goon line) but subtracting any one piece from that line doesn't have the impact of losing a core player, not even remotely close. It's a lot easier to pull a bournival type kid out of your ass to fill a depth role than it is for anyone in the organization to replace a Pacioretty type player.

I like them when they're healthy.

They don't have the depth to overcome injuries.

The original point was that man games lost is horseshit, because it doesn't differentiate between the quality of the players lost. You've admitted yourself that the quality of the players out of the line up absolutely does matter.

A couple years ago there was a site that tracked man games lost per cap hit.

Ie, They took a (players cap hit) divide by 82, multiply by man games lost

And then tabulated the results.

Wish I knew the site and if they were still doing it, cause while not perfect it could provide a better solution for what you are saying than just pure man games lost.

I'd like to see a few different breakdowns. Things like a man games lost breakdown of P/60, RelCorsi, QoC, etc. Where I'm not a big believer in any of those stats in isolation (or any stat in isolation really), a compilation of them broken down to help show the overall impact of the players lost to injury/suspension would be helpful.

There was a twitter post the other day that broke down cap savings due to injury so far and it had the Leafs the middle of the pack, but it obviously doesn't include suspension.

En Fuego.

5 games in 7 nights and they go 4-0-1. 8-0-1 in the last 9.

Since Emelin's return? 8-1-1.

I seem to recall someone pointing out how important he was, when he went down.....was it HP or you?

Lehner getting beaten and outplayed by bishop, eh?

That's gotta sting.

I definitely did... and I was scoffed at. I explained that he might not be as critical to all teams but definitely to the Habs. He brings a physical element that we dearly miss when he is out. Plus he's may not really make a lot of offensive plays, but he almost always makes a smart play with the puck.
