The last time the Leafs won 7 in a row was in 2003, so we could be on the best streak we've been on in 10 years with a W tonight.

The thing with these streaks is, sometimes you manage to beat what is deemed a tough opponent, but then fall to a team you think you can easily beat ... tonight might be one of those nights.

Dallas has gone 2-7-1 over past 10 games, and on paper it's a team we can beat. Statistically, after the hot start, Dallas is only 1 game above .500 after 50 games, and sits on the outside looking in the playoff picture in the West.

Realistically though, Dallas still has more weapons than they need if they are to end our streak tonight. First of all, Seguin (no I don't expect any "Thank you Kessel" chant tonight) has put together a breakout season, basically going PPG as the 1st line center in Dallas, and leading the team in G, A and Pts. Him and Benn form one of the best dynamic duo in the league. Holland, or whoever our checking line center is tonight, has got their work cut out for them.

And that is CRITICAL work to tonight's 2 points, because if you can shut down Seguin + Benn, you shut down Dallas. Dallas has no secondary offense, with Cole sitting on 3rd in team scoring with under .500 PPG pace.

Gonchar, who's finally playing like his age, is unfortunately also their best defenseman. Lehtonen and his .915SV% is also the only goalie they have over .900 SV%.

If we play our game like we did the past few games, and continue to use our speed and offense and jump to an early lead, we CAN indeed extent out win streak to 7 games. Far too many times we've seen this team fall flat on our face with those chances though ... so let's hope tonight is another step we build our team confidence.

Go Leafs Go!!!

Dallas is 2-7-1 in last 10 games but are coming off a big 4-0 win over Minny so expect them to be hungry; hopefully we pull out the 4-3 win

That's a pretty hurtin' group of defensemen they've got, and less-than stellar numbers from their goaltending. Hopefully our top offensive guys can feast on them a bit.

I'll also be very happy if we can finish the game without that little shit Seguin getting any points.

Geez, that's the truth. Their 3rd leading scorer would be tied for 7th on the Leafs (with Cody Franson). So, I'd expect that Seguin and Benn will get a steady diet of Phaneuf/Gunnarsson tonight.

Bernier's faced on average 35 shots per 60 minutes, this year.

hasnt he been splitting time for the most part?

He was splitting time to start the year, but of late has been played more as a #1....on the year he's started 60% of Leafs games. (by comparison, a true #1 like Price has started 80% of Habs games)

Thanks man.

As for Clarkson, no kidding ourselves, we are a better team if our 3rd line is Clarkson - Holland - Kulemin instead of whatever we have tonight... The Clarkson - Holland - Kulemin line was very good in the cycle game and keeping puck possession, and gives the leafs a different weapon than just counter attack / speed line, which is what out first and second lines are now.

Bleedsblue&white
01-23-2014, 07:16 PM
At this point in the road trip, are the Leafs better-used to the time shift, or are they feeling the fatigue of travelling in the West? That, and how they contain Seguin are going to go a long way in deciding the outcome. As rough as things have been for Dallas lately it could still easily come down to Bernier stealing one for us. Holland's line, assuming they are checking Seguin's, could end up being more important that what Kessel does tonight.

Whatever, just win baby...love hearing the mediots gets angrier with every two points.

Solid OP, 17. But I have to disagree here. There's no doubt Clarkson will look better if you sub Holland for McSelke. However, it's just two decent games where he looked any good at all. Further, one of them was his former team that he's just left for the big money. He better damned well show up for that game. He'll have to put together a lot more decent games, and more productive games, than that to justify not his salary but a spot on the top 3 lines.

Why would you say that it's only two decent games, when you're also using a terribly small data set to judge him?

The guy didn't forget how to play hockey just because he put a blue and white sweater over his head. Those 2 games were when he played like what we saw in Jersey. Strong along the walls, a pain in the ass on the forecheck, with the ability to attack the defence with speed and surprisingly good dangles.

I don't see him ever scoring 30 for us (because he'll never get the PP minutes required), but I see no reason why he can't be 15-20 every year for the next 3-4 before age starts to slow him down as long as he simplifies and stops trying to be the next Wendel Clark.

Fair enough. Just getting tired of the "Clarkson is a 4th liner" nonsense that has cropped up. I was as cranky as anyone about the contract and I full accept that the guy will never "earn" what we're paying for him, but we've seen flashes of the guy he actually is and I fully expect him to round out into that.

I've absolutely never understood this from some coaches.

So..you're down a few goals and badly need a few goals to get back into the game, so now is the perfect time to play the hell out of your worst players, right?

I can understand sending them out there for a shift and telling them to raise some hell, hit everything that moves and generally do their best to instill some energy in the boys on the bench, but then that's it, roll 3 lines, get out the blender and mix/match some goofy combinations together to see if you can get something going with your best players, and if you believe in a personal diety, some prayer.

Save the apology for when you recognize your mistake.

They've now shown the tip 3 or 4 times, and the goal on NHL.com also specifically states "tip-in".

Somehow I'm sure you'll still find a way to not admit you're wrong tho.
I really don't give a shit if I'm wrong. I saw it three times and couldn't see a tip. I'm watching the Dallas feed, so maybe they didn't show the same angles. If it was a tip, it was very subtle.

Well, that's the game there. On the bright side, I need to get up early.

Best I can figure is that he does it to send a message. Still seems like cutting your nose off despite your face.

Oh that's exactly why he does it, but these are grown men who are hyper competitive by nature. You shouldn't have to "send a message" by playing your 4th line like it's your 2nd.

It is, as you said, exactly like cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Well boys, we're probably due for a stinker ... many bounces went our way the last 2 W's so I'm not at all surprised we lost one vs. Dallas.

And I'd rather we end the game winning streak in a stinker than with a close loss ... it gives the buds a good kick in reminding what happens when they take their foot off the pedal for just a game.

It's one of those stinker games, not much use in analyzing it ... get back to practice tomorrow, and we'll get ready for Sat night's game. We get to play Maurice's Jets and start another winning streak then.

The Leafs have a tendency to get complacent following a big win or lengthy winning streak, I wasn't even upset we got blown out last night I saw it coming from a mile away. Really there isn't much that can be done, the Leafs just need to learn why they ****ed up so bad against the Stars, work on their weak points during practice and come out swinging against the Jets on Saturday.

- Bernier wins the #1 job, posts a sv% over .920, and takes us past the first round of the playoffs.

So far, so good.

- Kessel scores 45

Currently playing at a 40 goal pace.

- Raymond pots 20

Currently on a 20 goal pace.

- Rielly is on the top PP unit by seasons end.

Looking like the least likely of the bunch, but I still hold out hope as Rielly's proven (imo) to be deserving of it.

- Kadri doesn't top 60 points.

Playing at a 53pt pace.
