Glad we got the first home game after a long road trip out of the way, we were a little lucky to walk away with 2 points to be honest. Tonight we host the 2nd worst team in the East - the Panthers.

Just how bad are the Panthers? Well, let's see ... their leading scorer is Brad Boyes, who's playing on 39 points pace.

Tim Thomas, who's their prized summer signing, is posting a league average minus .912 SV%.

Scott Gomez, another gamble they took in the summer, is proving the Habs fans right, with 6 points in 24 games.

The entire roster only has 2 players who have a positive +/- if you exclude guys who have played < 15 games.

So this is a sad team ... but the thing is, they have ALWAYS given us problems over the past few years. Either their goalie (Clemmenson and Thomas both have a habit of saving their best games for the Leafs) steal games, or we completely under-estimate the Panthers and get embarrassed.

With the Sat tilt vs. the rival Sens, it's important we focus on the game tonight and pickup 2 points which we must pickup.

Kadri's been playing very well recently, looking forward to another strong game from him tonight. Gleason may not be able to play tonight so we'll see who gets called up.

Go Leafs Go!!

Let's not have the typical Leaf "play down to the level of your competition" game that we often see after a big victory over a good team.

This would be a good game to make a statement. Play well, get the win, and hopefully do it without going to OT/SO or making it a nail-biter at the end of regulation.

Gleason took part in the full practice this morning, and is a game time decision for tonight.

Last time the 2 teams met the Leafs lost 3-1 to the lowly Panthers, Clemmenson stopped 28 shots in what was a 'disappointing effort' according to Carlyle.

LeafGm

Hopefully with Kadri and Kessel both on fire, pumping enough goals to win past Tim Thomas or Scott Clemmensen shouldn't be an issue.

Hopefully, they fill that net big time and Bernier has another awesome game.

As good as this core is, we are badly lacking 2-way players, its a big concern that this team gives up 40 plus shots a night.

We've had a very good two-way player on the shelf for half the season now but due to come back soon, so that's a start.

Even when healthy out of a full 12 forward lineup there are two maybe three guys who are two way players (Bolland, Kulemin, Bozak) the rest are all one dimensional players who are mostly offensive players.

Yeah, if we actually have all of our forwards healthy for a bit, our top-9 could be:

James van Riemsdyk - Tyler Bozak - Phil Kessel
Joffrey Lupul - Nazem Kadri - Nikolai Kulemin
Mason Raymond - Dave Bolland - David Clarkson

It will be interesting to see if that third line can make something of itself. With the way our current #2 line is gelling, you have to figure Carlyle won't break up that line.

At the very least, it's reassuring to know we have NHL calibre centre depth in Holland and Smith should our centres go down again.

Holland hasn't looked quite as good as he did in his first tour of duty with us anyways, so him getting sent down won't be as much of a bummer. Definitely an NHL player though. Having him in the AHL should we experience any more disasters with any of our centers is a big step up over where we were at the beginning of the season in terms of organizational depth.

I'm kinda pumped to see this young lineup for the marlies anyways:

Ashton 22 - Holland 22 - Abbott 25
Kozun 23 - McKegg 21 - Leivo 20
D'Amigo 22 - Carrick 21 - Broll 20
Ross 21 - Ryan 22 - Biggs 20
(Staubitz 29 - Smithson 34 - MacLeod 26)

Brennan 24 - Holzer 25
Percy 20 - Granberg 21
MacWilliam 23 - Marshall 24
(Yeo 27)

MacIntyre 30
Sparks 20
(Gibson 21)

not only will that be one of the youngest marlies teams we've ever seen, but it might be the best one, too. About half that team made up of top-3 round picks, too.

Before Bolland's injury: 10-5-0 (.666%) (109 pt pace)
After Bolland's injury: 19-16-6 (.537%) (88 pt pace)

Based on those numbers you could make a case that Bolland's injury had an impact on the team's play, but also I think a bigger part of it came down to leaky team defense and goaltending.

Interesting breakdown. IIRC, December was also by far the toughest part of our schedule (in terms of qualcomp and GP), which makes a .500 performance even more impressive to me.

And of course, further evidence of how out of touch the media narrative in this city is with reality.

Also shows the impact of playing without two of your top three centres in the NHL. Not many teams have the depth to overcome that without missing a beat.

zeke
01-31-2014, 03:27 PM
Yeah, that december record looks even better when considering it was our toughest month for injuries and by far the toughest sked. .500 during that stretch is actually a good result.

November is the only real blackspot on the team's record so far - they played like crap against an easy sked, probably all ****y as hell off their first month.

Then again, I seem to remember November being a historically bad month for us, at least in recent history.

leafman101
01-31-2014, 03:32 PM
They lost all confidence. It probably started from key injuries, but once is started it just spiraled out of control and ended up limiting even what the team is best at, scoring, skating and penalty killing.

The fact that they got out of it speaks volumes about this team I think. They could have easily folded like lots of people thought they were doing.

Pronger84
01-31-2014, 03:38 PM
This is the thing I have noticed with the Leafs- When they are skating they end up outworking, out shootingand out scoring other teams in the other end. However when they stop skating and start collapsing back in front it leads to problems because the leafs are horrible at playing defense in their own end.

leafman101
01-31-2014, 03:41 PM
Yeah, this team is built around skating. They've added some size and toughness in guys like JVR, Clarkson, Gleason etc. But the key to this teams success is using their speed.

Not many teams can keep up.

And subbing out guys like Kadri, Bozak, Lupul, and Bolland and replacing them with the Clarksons and Smiths of the world certainly hurt the speed of the team.

Pronger84
01-31-2014, 03:46 PM
This is the problem I have with Carlyle, this team's biggest strength is speed and their biggest weakness is their physical game upfront yet he was adamant on them playing this absurd dump/chase hockey. Don't get me wrong I despise "run n gun" but this team needs to play to its biggest weapon, they should be using their speed in their own end to pressure the opposition (which they don't) instead opting to play passive hockey, and they use their speed in the offensive zone (which is good).
