SOCHI, Russia — As a rule, nobody wants to hear journalists complain about travel, which is fair. Travel, if you are lucky, is a part of the job. It’s like complaining about traffic, but somewhere else.

At the Olympics, though, the standard is different, because the Olympics are a comprehensive test. The venues, security, the athletes, transportation, the media, everything. Not every Games reflects on its nation in the same way — Atlanta, for instance, wasn’t so much a pan-American project in 1996 as it was a local disaster, in so many ways.

But Sochi, like Beijing, is different; it is a hideously complex logistical test of how efficiently a country, directed from on high, can pull the whole thing off with nearly unlimited resources. And by that measure, Sochi, its Olympic facilities built practically from scratch, is having some trouble.

“In general, it is done,” said one media hotel worker who has spent the past two years in Sochi, after coming from Siberia. “But the details are not done. And the details are everything.”

If these Olympics aren't a complete disaster, I'll be impressed.

Yes, let's compare the nation with arguably the highest standard of living in the world to a cesspool.

The biggest issue in Vancouver was one flame not working in the Opening Ceremonies and some minor worries about there not being enough snowfall.

They were a ridiculous success in every respect and created a legacy in Vancouver.

Not basic plumbing not working, terrorism, human rights abuses against homosexuals, and killing animals.

I forgot that Sochi's original budget was something like $8 billion and they're up to $50 billion and counting. Most of that money has been siphoned off by the Russian mafia or through government corruption, even as venues lie unused or incomplete.

Oh and the ski jump hills were built on a hill known for landslides (which have interrupted construction numerous times) and the ground isn't geologically stable.

This doesn't even take into account the hundreds to thousands of Sochi residents whose homes were bulldozed and they've been put into sub-standard housing in rooms of up to a dozen people.

Vancouver: Mutton Dressed as Lamb

We all knew it weeks before the game started, with accusations about doping being levelled at Russian athletes, and we all saw it on day one of the games, with the death of a Georgian athlete on a corner which miraculously was elevated the following day. Vancouver is not fit to hold the Winter Olympics.

Far from being a question of sour grapes, Russian commentators were already expressing their reservations as to the integrity of the Vancouver Lobby being able to host the Olympic Games weeks before the start. After all the IOC was starting to fire off in all directions before the first aircraft arrived.

We already have the case of a Russian skier being hounded to produce a urine sample after qualifying for a race, and if she had given the sample, she would not have had the possibility of entering the following round. Natalya Korosteleva was asked to provide a urine sample during a half-hour pause between the quarter-finals and semi-finals of a skiing event. “This seems against all the rules,” she stated, as she refused to have the sample taken, alleging that if she did, she would not have had time to continue in the next phase. Why her?

We all know Canada has problems with the future lines drawn on Arctic maps and we all know Canada lives in the shadow of its larger neighbour to the south. The abject cruelty shown by Canadian soldiers in international conflicts is scantily referred to, as indeed is the utter incapacity of this county to host a major international event, due to its inferiority complex, born of a trauma being the skinny and weakling bro to a beefy United States and a colonial outpost to the United Kingdom, whose Queen smiles happily from Canadian postage stamps.

Maybe it is this which makes the Canadians so…retentive, or cowardly. So it is not exactly a huge surprise to have international skating experts from the four corners of the Earth criticising the decision to award the Men’s figure skating Gold medal to the US athlete Evan Lysacekv over the reigning Olympic Champion Evgeny Plushenko, whose superior performance was inexplicably ignored.

As Plushenko explains, “I did a great short program but did not get the marks I deserved. When I asked why, they told me I was skating early and they had to retain top marks for the last group…Then in the free program, I was the last to skate, did everything clean and still didn’t get the marks”.

Everybody who knows anything about Olympic skating, Winter Olympic sports and international politics will infer from the pitiful and dangerous conditions provided by the Canadian authorities, which already caused one death, that Vancouver is mutton dressed as lamb. Take off the outer veneer and the stench is horrific.

It is a surprise that any Russian athlete would wish to remain in that sort of environment for a second longer.

They don't. The IOC and World Anti-Doping Agency are responsible for conducting the tests for PEDs.

Also got a big hearty laugh about the hatchet job on Canadian soldiers - some of the most respected in the world and known for countless humanitarian efforts.

Guess we should be more like the Russian military and level entire countries like they did to Chechnya and Georgia.

They can say whatever they want about their plans now, but if they're in a game situation and down a goal, no coach in their right mind would keep sending out Patrice Bergeron while one of Martin St-Louis, Claude Giroux, or Eric Staal sits on the bench. Though I suppose there still is a chance that they could make an idiotic Kirk Maltby/Kris Draper/Shayne Corson/Rob Zamuner type selection.

Carter and Nash, maybe.

I don't see how he's better than Benn, Duchene, Marleau, and Sharp, though. Those guys score just as much as he does, but all bring great speed and arguably better D, too.

I don't have time to do a statistical breakdown right now, but I'm fairly certain none of those guys score at the same rate as Giroux (unless we look only at this season as a sample size). The speed sure, but it's not like Giroux is slow. Defensively G's weaknesses I would argue would be masked more on the wing, especially if he's playing his strong side on the right.

And guys like Benn and Duchene don't have nearly the track record of a guy like Giroux either. Nor is Sharp known for speed or defence.

yeah, I thought Marleau had produced better than that.

The Marleau/Carter/Bergeron trio is definitely the most questionable.

Hopefully two of them are the odd men out for most of the games.

I would say that Hall and Staal are the most egregious ommissions, due to their elite production + speed.

Bode Miller, the outspoken American skier competing at his fifth Olympics, gave Sochi a ringing endorsement, saying it had exceeded all his expectations.

"It's great. It really has been awesome so far," he said.

"I felt like that's how it was going to be but after a lot of kind of negativity and a lot of speculation about what the challenges were going to be here... so far for us it's been great."

Well one forward will be sitting in the press box (with 1 D and 1 goalie).... the roster is 14, 8, 3... 13, 7, 2 will dress.

More Russian hilarity at the Sochi Olympics. Their "Deputy Prime Minister for Olympic Preparations" Dmitry Kozak inadvertently admitted that they have spy cams trained on Olympic guests in the showers of their hotel rooms (http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702304680904579366712107461956):

Dmitry Kozak, the deputy prime minister responsible for the Olympic preparations, seemed to reflect the view held among many Russian officials that some Western visitors are deliberately trying to sabotage Sochi's big debut out of bias against Russia. "We have surveillance video from the hotels that shows people turn on the shower, direct the nozzle at the wall and then leave the room for the whole day," he said. An aide then pulled a reporter away before Mr. Kozak could be questioned further on surveillance in hotel rooms. "We're doing a tour of the media center," the aide said.

A spokesman for Mr. Kozak later on Thursday said there is absolutely no surveillance in hotel rooms or bathrooms occupied by guests. He said there was surveillance on premises during construction and cleaning of Sochi's venues and hotels and that is likely what Mr. Kozak was referencing. A senior official at a company that built a number of the hotels also said there is no such surveillance in rooms occupied by guests.

...these Putin cronies clearly aren't used to having to actually answer questions from the media.

I'm pretty sure that Peter is stuck in 1987 and believes that Gorbachev is still Soviet Premier.

Also, for all of the previous criticism I've given the Russians regarding the poor conditions in accommodations and numerous construction zones/unfinished buildings, the actual facilities look superb so far, especially the main stadium and the indoor facilities for speed skating and hockey/figure skating. So they deserve top marks in that regard. The architecture is also very beautiful as well.

A few predictions before the events in Sochi begin:

- Canada wins between 7 and 10 gold medals, and 23-27 overall total medals.
- Patrick Chan wins gold in men's figure skating.
- Canada receives at least a couple medals in snowboard slopestyle.
- Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir finish second to the American pair in ice dancing.
- Kaillie Humphries successfully defends her gold medal in women's two-man bobsleigh.
- Canada wins at least two medals in men's freestyle skiing and two medals in women's freestyle skiing.
- Erik Guay finally wins an elusive medal in men's downhill - most likely a bronze.
- The men's curling rink takes home the gold and the women take home the bronze.
- The Canadian women's hockey team fail to defend their title and finish with a silver to the powerful United States women.
- The Canadian men's hockey team is impossible to predict but they will finish at some place in the top four - semi-finals appearance guaranteed. (Bold I know, but I'm unwilling to go out on a limb here).
- Charles Hamelin repeats as 500m champion in men's short track speed skating, and the Canadian men win another title in the 5000m team relay.

You're still doing something though, surely you see that. If you direct your personal spending towards organizations and companies that are in tune with your personal beliefs 99% of the time, but are forced into bed with them for something you really need/want for that 1% of the time, you're still having as much of an impact as you can.

For example, to borrow your analogy. It's like you wanting to drive to Banff. The only way for you to get to Banff is to drive. Countess & Count JR are dying to go to Banff and only to Banff, and frankly you wouldn't mind spending a week there yourself. All the flights are booked solid, the trains are booked solid and you only have the one week off, the rest of your schedule is ****ed. You personally boycott Imperial Oil due to their heavy presence in the oil sands, but the only gas stations on the way, and in Banff are ESSO's. What do you do? You suck it up and make the drive, don't you? You might load up the car with gas cans from a preferred vendor, but when they run our, you're filling up at the ESSO in Banff. When you get back to Vancouver though, you're avoiding ESSO's like the plague again.

That's me here. I completed personally boycotted the last few summer olympics. I avoid spending money with olympic sponsors whenever possible. In this case though, the ****s have something very dear to my heart held hostage (a best on best hockey tourney) where they're my only source of viewing this. I will do everything I can to avoid their coverage of the hockey tourney (torrents), but if I have to suck it up and watch a few hours of olympic broadcasting, I will.

That doesn't make what I'm doing not a boycott, just means that hockey is more important to me than the boycott.

Yeah the Olympics are an overtly corporate event and corrupt as hell, but who cares? It's worth it just to watch the athletes compete at the highest level in the world and seeing the highs and lows they experience.

It's my favourite international event to be honest.

If that means that Coca Cola receives a few more advertising dollars I could not care less. These athletes work immeasurably hard for years of their lives just for a brief moment and deserve the support.

Perhaps I should take a step back and ask why you're boycotting the games. Someone mentioned advertisers and they don't care if you watch their ads - as long as you consume their offerings.

The whole apparatus really. We have an incredibly corrupt governing body of "amateur" sport that regularly does business with governments that treat their citizens like shit so that they can host a multi billion dollar event, shining an international spotlight on their countries, which they then use as propaganda of sorts to show that they don't treat their citizens like shit (which is complete horseshit, as they've cleansed the olympic areas of undesirables prior to the first camera crew with an accent arriving).

All of it is allowed to exist because otherwise well meaning people tune in to watch sports they usually wouldn't give a **** about (when was the last time you watched a world cup of skiing event? cross country skiing on ESPN?) in droves because they beat the nationalist drums at us in anticipation. These levels of attention directed at one spot on the planet is like a heroin addict spotting the ****ing purple dragon to any MNC trying to peddle shit to the masses.

We tacitly accept all of this, but it's the eyeballs on the screens, by otherwise well meaning people that leads to the forced eviction of 2000 families from Sochi.

So yeah, I give enough of a **** about it to opt out of the experience for the most part. Hockey is a bit of a passion for me (as can be evidenced by my post count on a Leaf board), and seeing best on best is porn for a hockey addict. I'll do everything I can to avoid watching it on traditional TV (hello torrents), but if push comes to shove, I'll watch the medal games. I just don't think that accepting it as a fact of life (corrupt IOC giving propaganda platform to governments like China, Russia, etc) is an excuse for being one of the reasons (though, in fairness, one of about a billion consumer they're trying to reach) for the entire ****ed up system. It's more than just voting with your wallet, it's voting with your attention (which is, at the end of the day, what fuels it all at the levels it's at)

Not as rigidly no, but even in Vancouver, as we've heard in this thread today, we were shipping our homeless out of town for the games. Keeping the games in countries with reasonable human rights records and using the games as a carrot to get some governments of the world to play a bit nicer would be a nobler usage of the games than what we've seen.

And truthfully, I like to hear more about ways you give places like China and Russia the finger.

I do think the IOC is a massive capitalist dynamic where money trumps every other value. And Canada bows to it (as you mention with the homeless in BC) but how is that different to how Canada behaves when it has to choose between massive concerns (oil, hydro) and several thousand natives?

Massive differences. When oil is on native land, the protections that the government affords natives, has the oil companies showing up with truckloads of money and promises of high paying jobs for communities in the middle of **** nowhere that otherwise would live off of the government tit from now until the sun exploded.

When China wants to build a damn, they just tell the effected people what day their town gets a free lake, and that it would be best to **** off before they fill it with water.

Don't get me wrong, money makes the world go around. Doesn't matter where, there are though, degrees as to what the little people are expected to put up with, depending on where. Canada does it better than most places. Not perfect, but much better.

The only viable gripe is that the players they have under contract risk injury. A World Cup of Hockey would get a fraction of the attention that the Olympics gets. The website of Olympic bobsledder Justin Kripps has been censored by Russia's strict Internet laws while the Canadian is in Sochi for the Winter Games.

The heavy-handed censorship has led to speculation as to whether a recent picture of Kripps and his teammates posing bare-chested may have fallen foul of President Putin's anti-gay laws.

Kripps had been using the website to keep fans updated on the team's preparations for the Olympics, but when he arrived in Sochi he found access to it had been barred.

It is believed the ban could be related to a tweet that Kripps sent on February 6, that linked to a video mocking Russia's homophobic laws.

He tweeted: 'This is pretty funny' and linked to a short film made by the Canadian Institute of Diversity as part of its Keep The Games Gay campaign.

Kripps had also tweeted a team picture in January, which showed him and his bearded teammates wearing only their underpants.

Mark McMorris, you are a badass my friend. I go to bed after your first semi-final run after which you finish in ninth and are a long-shot to qualify, you knock out a huge second run, then have another tough first run in the finals before coming back again with a clutch second run for a bronze medal.

Plus any snowboarder from southern Saskatchewan must have some crazy fortitude going for them.
