View Full Version : GDT - Back from the break Leafs @ Isles | 7:00PM EST SNET

As much as I enjoyed the Olympics (and CBC did a very good job covering it, not just Olympics hockey, but overall Olympics as well) it felt so weird over the past 2 weeks not to have NHL hockey, and in particular, not to have Leafs hockey.

Kesssel and JVR coming back without a medal is a bit of a surprise, and Kulemin should have plenty of motivation to prove Russian hockey players are better what they displayed on that big stage, but in regardless, NHL hockey is BACK!

It's the stretch run with ~ 20 games left in the season. The new conference / playoff format sucks, as finishing 4th in the conference can still put us in 7th or 8th seed because of the stupid "top 3 teams from each division" rule.

The Leafs were red hot before the Olympics break, let's pick up right where we left off tonight ... and the Isles are a good team to start the post-Olympics run with, with Tavares out of their lineup.

Bolland had a setback so he definitely won't play in tonight's game. He's day-to-day and is probably a week or so away.

Go Leafs Go!!!

Must win tonight against the Tavares-less Islanders. No excuses just win

Jonathan Bernier in the visitor's starting goal for #leafs. JVR, Bolland both on ice for warmups in Long Island.

Kulemin once again at centre in Leafs line rushes; appears Smith may draw back in tonight

Mark Masters ‏@markhmasters 1h
Bolland is skating this morning, but appears doubtful for tonight

Mark Masters ‏@markhmasters 52m
Carter Ashton, Colton Orr not on the ice; both appear to be out tonight

Terry Koshan ‏@koshtorontosun 36m
Smith likely for fourth-line duty tonight with McClement and McLaren. Kulemin centring Raymond and Bodie #Leafs

Great getting Smith back; hopefully once Bolland sits we get McLaren off; 4th line of McClement/Bodie/Smith isn't bad

Boy, big time doom and gloom from MacLean on our schedule down the stretch. Sportsnet sucks.

MapleLeafBlueJayBoy
02-27-2014, 07:24 PM
MacLean will hopefully not be brought back after this season. He doesn't have a contract. Kyper and Mallard were razzing him about it the other day on hockey central. He got all huffy about it. With Sportsnet taking over NHL coverage next year, I would hope they would be getting rid of the riff raff like MacLean.

All the skills are there, the IQ isn't always.

Jake's got elite wheels and stickhandling which is damn elite if not closed to it but he's prone to severe brain farts with and without the puck whether it be giveaways or being caught out of position without the puck. He's the type of player that has it but leaves you wanting more, he's an enigma at times just when it looks he's turning a corner he stumbles back down.

He's still young at 24 but how many more times can that really be used as an excuse? The guy has to start thinking the game better out there instead of trying to out skate everyone, if he could ever grow a brain and combine it with those skills he'll be a deadly player, until then he's not much more then a tweener one who struggles to go from bottom to mid pairing on the blueline.

I agree Burke's a shrewd guy who usually comes out on top in trades, but he does love dealing with his old teams and he's been known to be fair, also he loves Franson as a player. I think Burke would love to have Franson AND Gardiner on his team, but would that be enough to pry Giorando? I don't know.... might have to sweeten the pot abit.

It was just a lousy lousy game ... it was very much like training camp pre-season hockey, and in some senses it was.

Gardiner was especially horrid last night but, given his age and the style he plays, I'm willing to live with the growing pain.

It's Franson who I think we really gotta think about what to do before the trade deadline, and if the right deal comes around it'd be a good time to unload.

Team just played sloppy all night, and Bernier wasn't good at all.

I can't remember the last time I saw a team give up TWO SH goal in the same PP ... that was embarrassing.

At least we got 1 point out of it ... but that's a crap game.

Pronger84

Lets be honest here,

With our roster we are never going to be remotely good in our end, guys either don't care about playing defense or simply aren't good at it.... it is was it is. Unfortunately this is team that has to rely on out skilling their opponents to win games, expect a lot of high scoring games down the stretch and all we can do is hope they win more then they lose, there are some concerning warts on this team tha need to be addressed in the offseason that's for sure.

I'd love to deal Franson but I just don't want to deal him for picks either. If were going to deal him then lets use him to fix some weaknesses on this team, I think we should try to package him with a guy like Bolland (if we think we cant resign him) and maybe a guy like Reimer and see who bites.

"At least we got a point" is cold comfort, it was a very winnable game and our schedule only gets a hell of a lot tougher from here on out coming up with a road trip against LA, San Jose and Anahiem then follow that up with a quick turn around to Washington on Sunday, this was a game we must have win and should have won but sadly we shat the bed.

67 points in 61 games, and on pace for 90 points. Been quire a while since a Leaf hit the 90 plateau, let alone finished 2nd in scoring. It's just too bad Crosby and Ovechkin are so far ahead in the Art Ross and Rocket Richard races respectively. It'd be nice if Ovie could go through a huge post-Olympics slump, like he did last time around, and give Phil a chance to catch up, but I see he also hit the scoreboard last night and moved up to 41 goals.

As for the game last night, pretty putrid stuff from a lot of guys, and we obviously should have come away with two points. That being said, I find it hard to start tearing my hair out over a sloppy loss right out of the gate after a 2-3 week layoff. If they lay an egg against the Habs on Saturday, I'll start to be more concerned.

I'm really not sure what your expecting from this team, they aren't just magically going to turn into a defensive juggernaut team overnight, sure Randy will skate them hard and chew their asses out (and rightfully so) but its' not going to change the foundation of this team. Our team is essentianlly run n gun, we are all spee and offense up front with very few players decent in their own end, I don't like it anymore then you do but it is what it is at this point and until Nonis starts making some moves to make this team into a tough team to play agains nothing is going to change.

The team needs to clean up its defensive game. We can, and we most likely will.

We scored 4G last night. This team can score. We just need to play well enough defensively to score more goals than we allow ... last I checked that's a W, right? :)

This team has always struggled with turnovers and getting the puck out of their own end, I just don't see it changing.... I mean if Game 7 wasn't a big enough wakeup call then I don't think them losing 5-4 in OT to the Islanders will make them realize they have to tighten it up. I hope they can though because this team has potential to do great things.

Bleedsblue&white
02-28-2014, 03:25 PM
The roster we have can be better defensively, but I believe time is the only way that happens. If we didn't change one blueliner, I would still say that in two years they will have matured and learnt some of the ins and outs required to be as good at defence as offense.

But that doesn't mean they'd be great, just better with age. IMO we could lose one or two of our Gardiner types, replace them with Gleason types, and be the better for it.
I don't give up on Gardiner myself, but if we want a name-brand guy we'll have to give up something.

I don't do anything this season, unless it's too sweet to pass up. I'd like to see another playoff run before I thought about losing Gardiner and Franson.
