This is gonna be another tough game. The Sharks are not only a top team in the West, but also red hot, going 7-2-1 over the past 10. The buds aren't too shabby ourselves, going 6-2-2 over the past 10 and winning 3 in a row.

It is never easy to play a top team on the road in back-to-back situation though. The Leafs gotta play a smart road-game tonight, limiting on the Sharks' chances.

I wonder if Carlyle will play Bernier again tonight or Reimer. Reimer would be the natural choice in back to back, but Bernier has been red hot and despite 43 saves last night he didn't have to stand on his head last night to get the W.

Other than that, I don't expect any changes to the Leafs lineup.

JVR - Bozak - Kessel
Lupul - Kadri - Kulemin
Raymond - Holland - Clarkson
JVR / Lup / Kessel - McClement - Bodie

Gunnar - Phaneuf
Gardiner - Gleason
Rielly - Ranger / Franson

Go Leafs Go!!!

This one's gonna be tough. Top line logged a lot of minutes last night.

Reims is gonna have to stand on his head.

IF it's gonna be reims.

This is a 'sandwich game'. Last night they wanted to win for the coach. Thur they wanna win for Bernier. This is an in between game on the second night of back to back. Very tough game to win.

Yeah, all signs point to a Leaf loss tonight.

Which, knowing the Leafs, probably means that they'll win convincingly just to mess with peoples' heads.

In the grand scheme of things, we knew we're in tough playing the Ducks, Sharks and Kings at home in 4 nights for this trip, so I'd have felt pretty good about it if we can be .500 for these 3 games.

And we already have 2 convincing points in the bag.

Even an OTL tonight would make me happy about this trip.

Of course, Reimer may have other ideas ... Reimer would surely like to remind the hockey world he was a very good starter for us just last season.

I don't have the ability to look it up at the moment, but I suspect our number of back-to-back games is pretty comparable to the rest of the league.

Bozak, Phaneuf, Gunnarsson, Kessel, Kulemin, Orr, Reimer...pretty much the only remnants from that team.

number17
03-11-2014, 04:45 PM
Orr isn't even playing tonight ... just saying. :)

But I was watching the game last night, and seeing who's the core of this team ...

Kessel
JVR
Lupul
Bozak
Phaneuf
Bernier
Gunnarson
Gardiner

Except for Gunnarson and Bozak, all of them are acquired through trades. Gunnarson and Bernier are the only one who is NOT added by Burke.

Amazing how Burke managed to build the core of this team with a series of good to very good to absolutely steal trades, when he had little to nothing in the cupboard to begin with.

Enough with the excuses, if we lose tonight its because we weren't good enough.

Its not an excuse but were playing a back to back coming off a win against one of the best teams in the league and tonight we play another one of the better teams in the league, the Leafs need to bring their a game tonight but if they lose it won't bother me.

It is an excuse, like playing hockey games at 3:00pm is an excuse. Every team deals with back to backs.

yep, and more often than not, they lose those 2nd night games too.

It's not an "excuse", it's accepting that the situation sucks. Not an impossible to win game, but it is what it is. Elite team that appears to be on a hell of a run of form right now, catching the Leafs (also on a nice run of form) on the back end of B2B's after they played the shit out of their best players to secure a W against another elite team last night.

A win is possible, but unlikely. Personally, I'd be satisfied with a loser point tonight.

Not that it matters, but I do believe way back when this year somebody did analyze the schedules and the Leafs did lead in back to backs and B2Bs vs. rested opponents this season, or at least amongst the leaders.

Too bad this is the backend of a back to back, because I think otherwise we match up very well against the Mighty Sharks, from top to bottom.

We really need the Kadri line to step up tonight to take this one tonight, though, IMO.

franson has just 7 points and is a -14 in his past 25 games. 1 pp point in his past 14.

the guy's an offensive defenseman who is bringing absolutely no offense, and is a liability defensively.

he deserve sto be sat.

gotta get rielly on the left side, shift dion back to the right side... break the zone and feather those passes.

dion and rielly actually complement each other nicely on the pp.

that Kessel-Dion hookup on the leftside has kinda been the key to the PP this year, though.

mbow30
03-11-2014, 10:04 PM
disagree.

kessel's work through the neutral zone, and pulling up over the blueline.

phaneuf isn't doing much on the pp. having kessel 6 ft from him kind of takes him out of the play, if anything.

he should get plenty of room with kessel on the half boards, though.

zeke
03-11-2014, 10:07 PM
Not saying its necessarily necessary, but pretty much every PP is started with Kessel-Dion establishing the zone in that left corner.

zeke
03-11-2014, 10:09 PM
Anyways, this Franson sickness might be a huge development for the team.

Franson has been struggling pretty badly, while both Jake and Ranger have been playing really really well since the olympics/trade deadline.

This could be a huge chance for Jake-Ranger to establish themselves as a big-minute pair - or it could expose them in less sheltered minutes with only 6 D in.

If they do continue to play well as a big minute pair, though, this could really change randy's outlook on our defense corps going forward.

James Reimer in net and back to back games? Something as a bettor I imagine you go all in on. But some dark horses are rising within Leafnation, such as Ranger, Gardiner and Lupul is on stealth to his game from last year. If Leafs win, you can imagine that this will wake up Leafnation. Should be interesting. If Reimer wants to be an NHL starter goalie this is his night to hide a below average glove hand.

Tonight is the odd night I wish we have dressed McLaren and Orr ... and if we can, any goon we can too.

Send them out there, start a few fights and call it a night.

Wow

Everyone sucks tonight. Absolutely everyone, but a special nod to that useless piece of shit Clarkson. Completely humps a 3-2 opportunity by trying to take on both defenders by himself, somehow loses his stick in the process. Raymond ends up with a golden chance to make this a game and fumble****s it, but we still had a chance to get the puck back in front and force a chance...but Clarkson somehow ends up in a fight when we have zone possession (of sorts)

He needs to be a healthy scratch.

Mindzeye? Reimer got the Leafs into the playoffs last year? Do you know anything about hockey at all. Reimer is not good at all. At all. This was a sacrifice game which is fine in an 82 game schedule. Bernier is the Leaf MVP and the only reason this team is not closer than ever to Buffalo. All is good, Bernier is on for L.A. but please Mindzeye or whatever your name is, get some kind of perspective on hockey, Reimer lost the playoff gave to Boston. He is garbage, but has a great smile and maybe that pleases you? But is not athletic and has no glove.

Congrats to the Leaf coaching staff in putting Reimer in tonight. A giveaway game, lets win in L.A. Reimer, worst goalie in the NHL this year and last.

not sure why he's riding the top line so hard when they're not playing well. they've been on for 3 of the 4 goals against, and have only created a chance or two offensively. we're gonna need them vs. LA.

The Kadri line hasn't been on for a goal yet, and they didn't play all that much last night - they should be getting leaned on, even if they struggle.

Give it up Zeke, its a throwaway game with a throwaway goalie. Stuff the stats for a meaningful game. Reimer is on display and guess what he gets a third round pick cause he is a third round pick. Yes

Do you know anything about hockey at all.

Yes

Reimer is not good at all. At all.

His career save percentage suggests otherwise

This was a sacrifice game which is fine in an 82 game schedule.

Yep

Bernier is the Leaf MVP

Bernier or Kessel have been our MVP this year. Bit of a toss up really.

and the only reason this team is not closer than ever to Buffalo.

Reimer having a 10-7-1 record suggests otherwise. Even after tonight, Reimer is looking at a ~.911 SV% and the Leafs have a 91 point pace with Reimer in net (even including this game)

but please Mindzeye or whatever your name is,

:lol and I suppose your mother named you dingledorf? Though I must admit, you strike me as a mouth breather so I can't say that the name would seem out of place. Perhaps she had a bit of stunning clairvoyance on the matter.

get some kind of perspective on hockey, Reimer lost the playoff gave to Boston.

If all you have is simplistic crap like this so say, I don't think you're qualified to determine what type of "perspective" I have. Reimer was poor in the 3rd period of that game. But blaming it on him is beyond silly. Franson was the direct cause of at least one of the goals. Randy not using a time out late is a hilariously shit coaching strategy, considering how clearly rattled his team was, and how hard he was basically triple shifting Phaneuf & Gunnar. Our wingers lost every important board battle in the last 5 minutes of that period. So yeah, Reimer didn't make the saves we needed him to make, but a shit all around effort is what put Reimer in the position of having to either bail us out, or lose.

He is garbage, but has a great smile and maybe that pleases you?

Though he does have an adorable smile, it's his career .915% and not his "aw shucks" Mennonite ways that "please" me.

But is not athletic and has no glove.

Preston, is that you?

Seriously though, you clearly have a complete lack of self awareness to accuse me of lacking perspective and then using hilariously subjective methods of judging a goaltender like "not athletic", "no glove", etc. Goalies are paid to stop shots, not make it look pretty in the process. By every measure, Reimer has been at minimum an average NHL goaltender to this point in his career, with 2 sustained stretches of well above average play. But you're too ass hurt about a single period team wide collapse to be able to properly measure him, aren't you?

Now do please **** off, and perhaps choose a more suitable sparring partner the next time you want to call someone out. Pronger is more your speed, you should look him up.

If you don't use him, he's not. As soon as Wingels goes after Lupul, you send Orr out on the first change on the fly, with instructions to send a message. I don't see what the ****ing point in having a guy like Orr, who can't play hockey, if you're not willing to use him to send the only message he's capable of sending.

He's going to have to learn to keep himself sharper than this, much sharper than this. He's been outdueled cleanly for the #1 job, by a dude putting up a Vezina nomination level season. Sucks for Reimer after what he did for the club, but he's being paid bank to play a kids game. Suck it up and bring your best when you have a chance to help the club.
