So we're planning a trip through the US by train in December and January. What's the best option for mobile internet these days? There's no way that I'm using my phone and racking up a ton of roaming charges at $6/MB

They have some sort of internet sticks I've seen in the past... but I've never used one. Any suggestions?

Don't wanna miss any Hab games.

What type of device? You could always scoop a US version sim from an AT&T store, then gets a US pre paid credit card so that you can activate the SIM on a pay as you go plan.

I don't know of anything more specific than that though, but it's about the only way I can see a Canadian device using American networks without the rapey roaming charges.

Well I was thinking of using something on the laptop that will give me a wifi signal for my phone.

A buddy suggested Roam Mobility. http://www.roammobility.com/

I'm going to look deeper into this option. I'll just have to unlock my phone... but then I can get like 2mb per day for $2 a day.

Thanks, I'll look further into both. I really like the looks of the Roam Mobility option though.

Who are you with here?

Bell charges $50 to unlock, others I believe it's $35

We're with Bell... I didn't even realize they'd unlock your phone. Pretty sure MTS wouldn't when I asked them.

Might have free wifi on the train so you can get your forum ice fix in.

Driving down to Minot ND then taking the train to Pittsburgh spending 3 weeks then heading back.

On the way there we're spending a day and night in Chicago. Should be a great trip.

Gonna see the Habs play in Pittsburgh on Jan 3rd. Maybe take in in another game or two.

I always get a travel pass for my phone but I don't watch video or stream. You can unlock with SIM card or get US burner phone as well.

I got my iphone unlocked. Bell did charge me $50. I think Rogers is a bit cheaper.

Depends where you are, but as I am floating around Alaska right now I was able to get a 5 GB data only sim for $35 USD. You can probably find a T-Mobile or AT&T sim that is similiar to that. Even with the $50 unlock charge you'll probably spend less that way.

Canadians are really getting buttslammed by the telecom carriers. (no homo)

On the SIM do you get text and talk too? My travel pass is usually 65 for one month 300 MB data unlimited text and 300 minutes. Telus will unlock for 35 or 40 I think. Downside of SIM is new tel no.

Not sure as I don't text or talk to anyone. It gives you a number for whatsapp or viber. Plus skype will work. imessage works as well. Facebook messenger too.

Yeah I think I'll do the unlock then get Roam Mobility. (http://www.roammobility.com/) Unlimited text and data for $1.95 a day and $1 a day for anything over 14 days.

$2.95 a day if you want unlimited calling too.

Depending on what you've got, it's not that hard to unlock your phone yourself.

Yeah I looked it up on youtube. I have a Galaxy 3 and it looks relatively simple.

Just get a mobile Wi-Fi through Verizon/AT&T/Sprint. Easy peasy.

Is that a USB stick?

It's a stand alone hot spot. You both can use separate laptops, phones whatever on it. Wireless.

So it's something I can pick up at say WalMart in the US? Then just buy like one month worth of data?

What should I search for to read up on it? I did a quick search and the things I found under "mobile Wi-Fi through Verizon" seemed like you needed a plan... like a 2 year plan.

I'll call a buddy that deals in this stuff Monday. Not sure if it requires a contract.
