View Full Version : GDT - Leafs vs. Nemesis | 8:00PM EST SNET-O

I figure I'll start the GDT early since this is a good benchmark test and an important game for the buds.

The Bruins have our number the last few years, and our first game vs. the big bad Bruins this season ended up in a players only meeting ... that's how bad it was. You can't deny the Bruins and their trap and their style bring out the very worst of the buds.

Since that game though, and the subsequent player meeting, the Leafs have gone 5-1-1 and are within 2 points of the Bruins with a game in hand. We've had the luxury of playing some pretty bad teams / bad goalies during that span, but we're full credit for some of the wins during that span as well ... in any case, this game (and the Sat game vs. the PIT) will be a good benchmark test to show us where we REALLY stand in the East.

For the record, i DON'T think the buds are playing well despite the 5-1-1 run. Our possession is poor, our shots against is very high (averaging ~ 38 during this span) and our defensive zone coverage is porous. Yet, with improved goaltending, depth scoring and a good PK we've managed to win. If we don't tighten our defense though, and keep down the SA, this game can potentially be another wake up call

And that's not because the Bruins are on a roll or cause they're a powerhouse, it's just their system and their style always bring out the very worst of Carlyle's swamp system.

Winnik may be able to get back in the lineup for this game, and Carlyle has to decide whether Percy gets to play in this one ... but that should be the only lineup changes.

Go Leafs Go!!!

...as well, unsurprisingly, it's 22 year old Sam Carrick that gets bumped out of the lineup by Winnik's return, not 29 year-old AHL journeyman Trevor Smith.

Old habits die hard.

Yeah, I'm not saying I hate the move, necessarily. Smith's an OK fill-in player, and he had a good game against the Sens.

It's just unsurprising.

Going back to comfort zone is one thing ... but limiting Kadri to 14 min a game is pretty dumb when he, by far, is the best possession center on the team whose offensive output is no worse than Bozak when playing with Kessel.

LeafGm
11-12-2014, 11:36 AM
Yeah, Talbot wasn't much a break for us. For whatever reason, we beat Lundqvist like a rented mule whenever we face him, and the Rangers have wised up to that.

I'm pretty sure Talbot was spectacular against us in an Rangers victory last year as well.

Why does Bernier get this start if there's supposed to be a legit chance for Reimer to compete for the #1 spot? He's outplayed Bernier by a decent margin and has been the reason for some key wins, including the last game.

Its never been a legit chance from the get go.

Reimer didn't do himself any favors last year but it still was lopsided at the start and it snowballed.

Reimer has outplayed Bernier this year, even with Bernier's stats being padded from some slack competition, and the games remain lopsided.

Regardless of whether Nonis and Carlyle think Bernier's the number one, you'd think they'd atleast ride the hot hand to give themselves the best chance of winning.

number17
11-12-2014, 05:05 PM
I really don't have a problem with either goalie ... has Reimer outplayed Bernier? Probably, but the last few starts I think both goalies have played equally well.

On one hand if we complain about Bernier getting his stats 'padded', then we can't complain about Carlyle giving the start against our nemesis to Bernier ... this is definitely not a game that will pad Bernier's stats. I heard the Leafs have a 2-12-1 reg. season record vs. the Bruins since 2012.

Bottomline is, if we play like we did last time vs. the Bruins then it doesn't matter who starts.

The Bruins have won 5 in a row, we have gone 5-1-1 since the last Bruins game, this would be a good time to meet the Bruins and measure where we sit in the East.

It's good to slay the dragon for once, and it was a charge led by Kessel as well ...

- A lot of people will chalk this up to "bad game by Rask", but other than the Rielly goal (4th goal?) I don't think any of the goals were 'soft' ... the 2 Kessel snaps, I am not sure if any goalie can stop them, and the Bozak tip was also point blank range. And, the fact we outshot the Bruins 6-0 in the first half of the 1st tells us we, indeed, showed up for battle and when we did, our speed and our skill brought out the worst of the Bruins

- I STILL don't like Kessel, Bozak and JVR together on the same line but you can't deny they are one of the most (if not THE most) dangerous line in the league when they are on their game. I also can't deny Bozak is a very underrated offensive player. The fact we signed him as a college UFA - kudos to Burke. Bozak can be a top 6 F on any team and the fact we found him as an UFA was pretty good deal (remember Brunnstrom, Gilroy and all those other names rated higher than Bozak? None of them actually stick around anymore)

- Even then, whenever we were hemmed in our own zone last night, I looked on the ice and I always saw #21, #81 and #42 on the ice. If I were Randy, I would have Winnik-Kadri-Kessel as my 1st line, and JVR-Bozak-Clarkson as my 2nd line. I'd stick with the big 3 in PP, and also use them as a line late in game when we are behind. THis should balance the offense and improve defense, especially cut down on SA.

- Leivo deserves more icetime, and putting both Winnik AND Clarkson on Kadri's line isn't gonna help Kadri get on the scoreboard. Kadri played a good game Imo, but he can't really score with 2 simialr players in Clarkson and Winnik. Time to give Leivo a try on Kadri's line if Carlyle wants the 2nd line to start scoring.

- Love that goal from Holland too ... it was a nice power move

All in all I think almost all the players played well, what's the most important is the team showed up, was ready for battle at puck drop, and we got our revenge from the earlier loss at home.

That's been the story of the Leaf franchise. A lot of very good players, but a severe lack of elite talent. And then even when we get it, it's usually guys like Mogilny and Leetch, who don't stick around for that long, and who's best days are already behind them.
