View Full Version : GDT - Third time's the chime | 7:30PM SNET

Let me start the GDT ... other than the Sens and the Bruins, there aren't too many teams I hate with a passion but the Pens happen to be one of them.

We got embarrassed in our first meeting with the Pens this year, we played a great game but didn't get the outcome we'd like in our 2nd game, and let's hope tonight we can finally get the W vs. Crosby and Co. and continue our win streak.

It won't be easy though, as Polak is out of the lineup. Holzer has been called up will probably get in the lineup tonight.

Lupul and Booth both are going back in the lineup tonight. So there's no shortage of storyline for this one.

Just win - Go Leafs Go!!!

man that buffalo loss is annoying.

We knew we had a tough sched the last couple of weeks - BOS-PIT-BUF-NSH-TB-DET-PIT - and that it would be a nice test for us, with Buffalo being the only soft spot. And we've actually gone 3-2 in the 5 "tough" games in that stretch, but the stupid loss to BUF makes us 3-3 and having to win tonight against the best team in the league to come out ahead in the stretch overall.

A win tonight sure would be nice to finish off that stretch and head into a little softer spot with WSH-DAL-NJ up next.

Shitty period. The concerning part is that we didn't even get any point blank chances. Them scoring was not surprising but this isn't a defensive juggernaut we are facing. Don't expect Carlyle to make any of the necessary adjustments or the team having the resolve to come back in this one.

More of a long term demographic play. Raptor fans tend to be younger and ethnically diverse. Remember that some current Leaf fans grew up when the Leafs were the only game in town. Today's kids have a choice.

I'm sure he has some of the regular bumps and bruises that are part of every NHL season, but I haven't seen any indication it's anything more. We've just been playing some pretty tough, structured teams, and Kessel hasn't had the puck a whole hell of a lot. Part of the problem is the pussy-soft 1st line Carlyle's fallen back into using. I'd like to see Carlyle put someone who can actually win some puck battles back on Kessel's line.

Moral victory is such an overused term in sports, but there are indeed plenty of positives in this one:

- PIT averages 31.4 shots per 60, and we allowed them to 26 shots in 60+OT... this is without Polak who has been our 2nd most reliable defenseman this year too, so this is definitely an achievement
- It's a come from behind win, where we were down 0-2 after 20 and most would have thought the night's over against the eastern powerhouse, but the team showed plenty of fight and scratched and crawled for at least 1 point
- the Kadri line was dynamite last night. They hit, they scored, they defended well .. all 3 of them were positive at the end of the game (where as our 1st line was terrible)
- Kadri and Bozak were in #87's face all night long. Even Bozak was chirping at Crosby, getting in his face, never backed down and went toe to toe with him. I love that "I'm not gonna take any crap from you and I don't care who you are." attitude

Now, the bad ...
- Bernier was just not very good last night ... he completely misplayed the first goal, say all you want about Rielly not tieing up Comeau in front, but when your goalie is not even facing the front ...
- Giving up the first goal in the first shift is always bad news, and this is the 4th time this season alone Bernier has given up a goal in the first 2 min of the game
- JVR and Kessel were completely invisible last night
- Lupul and Booth, first game back obviously, but were also invisible
- Holzer actually had a good night imo, but Robidas has been pretty bad for some time

Overall, I don't have a big problem with this loss, let's hope we get 2 points in the next one ...

It's time to shake up the lines, especially since Booth and Lupul being back give us other options, and allows us to ice a pretty competitive fourth line.

As I mentioned in my last post, one of the keys should be breaking up our first line. They've had some success in the past, because they're all very skilled players, but they all bring too much of the same dimension. I also like Kessel and Bozak a lot more when they're not playing with each other. Something like this would be nice:

Leo Komarov - Nazem Kadri - Phil Kessel
James van Riemsdyk - Tyler Bozak - Mike Santorelli
Joffrey Lupul - Peter Holland - David Clarkson
David Booth - Daniel Winnik - Richard Panik

That's three pretty balanced scoring lines, with good combinations of skill and grit. The fourth line's got potential too; Panik's got 4 goals for us, on only 16 shots and with pretty minimal ice-time. I think he deserves to be in the lineup more than Trevor Smith, and I think that's a line that can be trusted to play 8-10 minutes a night, like our fourth line last night. Winnik is also pretty much interchangeable with Santorelli in that lineup, depending on how each is filling their respective role.

It was a terrible start and they battled back to get a point against one of the top teams in the league. They are starting to turn the corner and focus on the right things. They just need to keep doing what they are doing, and no revert to old bad habits, and they will continue to get stronger as the season goes along.

We've seen some real encouraging stuff the last couple of weeks from this team.

We've seen completely different reactions to the 18 wheeler going off of a cliff media driven insanity after those tough games in the past. They are starting to buy in.

I was thinking of moving Komarov to the first line. He has shown enough skill on any line this year. If there was a player on this team deserved of a line promotion it would be Komarov.

there are games where goaltending is not your problem, and there are games where even with better goaltending you may not win the game, but last night's game, as LOF said, was clearly one where goaltending was a problem for us and to lose a 1 goal game in OTL, the statement LOF and I made were clearly valid.

I'm not saying your point wasn't valid. Its been a pretty consistent statement when thinking of this team: "if we were better..."

We need one of them to raise their game if we want to stay afloat.

In fairness, we've stayed afloat already with disappointing goaltending. If were were receiving good goaltending (by the standards of the two we have in house), we'd be doing more than staying afloat.

.915 sounds good until you look at the rest of the league, its at the bottom.

We should've won that one.

He doesn't always suck, but that game he did. He's had many slow starts in games this season. Not a good trend.
But even worse is Carlyle's loyalty to him. He will start Bernier every single chance he gets, no matter how soft he was the last time he started. Bad for Reimer; bad for the team as a whole. We already have a team that loses it's steam too easily when they're behind in a game. Always starting Bernier, who's lately been letting in quick soft goals to start off games, doesn't help us.
Randy needs to have more faith in Reimer, and less in Bernier. We have a solid tandem of goalies here, who could, and should, be splitting more of the games.
I can't wait for Carlyle to be gone so that Reimer can have a better chance.

LeafOfFaith

We just can't go on with keeping both these goalies. They're both worse than they would be if one was the true #1.

And I still think Reimer is the keeper.

I'd love to trade bernier, franson, and a prospect to Edmonton for a young forward and hand the reigns to reimer.

I know Reimer's not perfect and has holes to his game, much like any goalie, but I'm equally mystified as to why Bernier has apparently proven himself as a #1 in so many people's eyes here. He's been alright during his time here, and has had long, unspectacular stretches, and flat out ugly games.

Only one of the two goalies has proven himself as a capable, game-stealing player over his time here. And really, he was only derailed by the Bernier acquisition itself, as a resounding vote of non-confidence from management two years ago after the best season we've seen any Leaf goalie produce, including an amazing performance in the playoffs.

Bernier - plays the game like a franchise goalie, that's his upside. Game-stealing ability, handles the puck well and limits second chances with good rebound control.

Reimer - plays every game like it might be his last. Works his ass off, but relies on a blocking style for his first save (pushing out rebounds), and pure athleticism to make the second stop.

With Berns you can manage the game better, with Reims you are facing off a lot in your defensive zone.

Leafyblue

This is my issue with him.

There are way too many of these to rely on him as your starter. I don't know any true #1s who let in so many bad goals. The last game was a perfect example. On a normal night, does Lundqvist give up 3 stinkers out of 4 goals? Sure, once in a while he will, but not like every second or third game he plays.

Reimer doesn't seem to have those moments on such a regular basis. And I believe he's proven himself of being more able to make the spectacular save and to shut down the other side when the score requires him to.

I don't think there's an absolute clear cut winner between them, but the last time Reimer had the #1 job, he was just about the best #1 we've ever had.

Why should it?

He may not be letting up more goals than Reimer, but he tends to give up bad ones, at bad times, that deflate us, that start us out from behind and set the tone in many games.

He can have a game where he gives up two shit goals relatively early, and then ends up saving 30 of 32 shots. A .937 SV% is pretty darn good, but if we're playing from behind from the get go, with the other team sitting back and keeping us stifled, do we say he played a great game if we lose 2-0 or 2-1? Bad goals or inopportune goals kill.
