The leagues haven't finished their seasons yet and we have the first summer signing. Long time Man U target Memphis Depay will sign for a reported €30 million when the window opens in July.

I really hope he doesn't end up buried on the bench of a bigger club like seems to keep happening to all our talented young dutchmen as their careers stutter and fizzle out.

Since he played for LVG on the Oranje, I don't think it's going to be an issue. Di Maria and Januzaj may need to find someplace else to play and I saw somewhere that PSG might be interested in Di Maria after losing out on Depay.

I wonder where the Raheem Sterling drama will take us this summer? Now Brendan says he expects him to stay.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has said he expects forward Raheem Sterling to stay at the club for the remainder of the two years on his contract.

Liverpool cancelled a meeting with Sterling on Friday because of comments attributed to the player's agent.

Aidy Ward reportedly said the England forward, 20, will not sign a new deal even if offered "£900,000 a week".

Rodgers said: "Raheem has two years left on his deal and I expect him to see that two years through."

Its a tough one for Liverpool, its never good to have a player around that has so publicly pushed to go but they did that with Suarez 2 summers back and made it work for a while.

If they want to be a top 4 club then they cant keep selling their best player every summer...... otherwise you become Tottenham.

Don't forget the part about constantly changing managers. Actually, if you look at the two clubs over the last five years or so, there's really not a lot of difference, either in on-field results, or supporter frustration.

Liverpool defenders Kolo Toure and Andre Wisdom have signed new contracts with the club.

The club would not disclose the length of the deals but Toure's is reported to be a one year extension, while 22-year-old Wisdom has signed "long term".

Will be interesting to see if Wisdom goes back and plays regularly for Liverpool next year. He looked good anytime I saw him play for WBA.

Tottenham Hotspur have signed Austrian defender Kevin Wimmer from Cologne for an undisclosed fee on a five-year deal.

The 22-year-old centre-half moved to Germany in 2012 from LASK Linz in his native Austria and made 72 appearances for the Bundesliga club.

Although Tottenham have not disclosed a fee for Wimmer, various reports suggest they have paid around £4.3m.

Agree with the sentiment, but Raheem isn't our best player, Philippe Coutinho is. And I think Emre Can and Daniel Sturridge (when healthy) are better players, too. When they start to make peeps about leaving (especially Philippe), then I'll worry.

But yeah, losing the players we've lost doesn't say much for the club and its ambitions. Of course the ownership travails over that time have played a part, too. The Hicks/Gillette group were a disaster, and FSG is still trying to sort things out.

Liverpool have agreed a deal to sign England midfielder James Milner from Manchester City on a free transfer.

The Reds have agreed personal terms with the 29-year-old, who will join the club when his contract at the Etihad expires on 1 July - subject to a medical.

Great addition but as ever with Milner not sure what his starting position is.

To me that's typical Liverpool of late. "He's a good guy and a good player, we'll figure out where he fits." Not sure that really flies as a personnel strategy.

I'm reading that they are also picking up Danny Ings. That would be negotiating rights, since his contract is expiring, but Burnley need to get what they can for him.

Villa sound like they have no intention of dealing Benteke, meaning we'll be hearing rumors about him daily until the summer window closes.

Yep. Rodgers has to decide on his tactics and then find players to fit the formation. Not the other way around, which is what it looks like.

Well ... in truth, I think Milner's best seasons in the EPL were at Aston Villa when they played him in a central midfielder role a little bit forward of the mix. He was surprisingly adept at defending and worked VERY well with Gareth Barry to create attacking chances. So maybe Liverpool is thinking of returning him to that role, which gives them a Gerrard replacement.

One thing for sure ... Milner won't leave anything in the boot room. He'll give you everything he's got and raise the passion level a couple of notches. Ever team needs guys like that.

He does, and he played fairly well for Wigan in 2011. As a Villan I can't decide if I'm upset at this news or not. Villa wanted to sign Cleverly and he put in some good games for them after Sherwood took over. But he was so blasted inconsistent and played such incredibly crappy football when he first got there that I dunno. I have trouble working up the energy to be upset that he's gone.

I think he is the type that needs a manager to put his arm around his shoulder and build up his confidence.

In his final days at United he wasn't getting that, simply because Moyes had bigger thing to worry about. At Villa its no shock that he played better under Sherwood than Lambert considering their management styles.

If anybody can show a player support and try to bolster their confidence its Martinez (its probably his biggest fault as a manager as well as his biggest strength).

Danny Ings has signed with Liverpool pending a medical exam. A statement on Burnley's website says that they rejected Liverpool's offer but continue to negotiate. Ings is out of contract on June 30, why is there a fee?

Because of his age. Clubs that develop players are awarded compensation if the play leaves the club as a free agent.

jeffbear
06-08-2015, 02:21 PM
Don't really get that one. Ings had a rough old seasons at Burnley despite a promising career arc to that point. He certainly didn't look like a Premiere League striker though ... so Liverpool grabbed him for what? Depth? A guy that age needs to play.

For the record, the age cutoff for development fees is 24 and Ings is only 22.

Not sure I would say he had a rough season. 11 goals isn't a bad return for a first year EPL player on a team that got relegated.

He is a better option for Liverpool at this point than anybody they currently have that isn't named Sterling for a central striker role.

Totally agree, and if I thought Liverpool were about to spend £30mill on a striker I would be worried. Don't think they will though so he will be at worst 2nd choice behind a striker who stays fit once every 3 or 4 seasons.

Barcelona's Dani Alves has signed a new two-year deal to remain at the club.

The 32-year-old Brazil right-back, who was set to be out of contract this month, had been linked with moves to Liverpool and Manchester United.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/33064647

Considering they cant sign anybody to replace him this summer this almost had to get done for Barca.

Sami Khedira will join Juventus on a free transfer from Real Madrid on 1 July, the Italian club have announced.

The Germany midfielder, 28, has agreed a four-year contract with the Italian double winners and Champions League finalists.

I don't see much Italian football but Vidal is more of an attacking creative type than a holding sitting midfielder right?

Just wondering where he fits into that Madrid team, if Benetez is going with a 4-2-3-1 setup would Vidal be suitable as one of the 2?

Guess team needs or where to play a player has never really concerned Madrid in their transfer business

Vidal is that rare hard man, holding midfielder who can do something with the ball when he joins the attack. He also plays at breakneck speed and high intensity. He and Khadira basically do the same things ... Vidal just does them better and with more snarl. And a stupider haircut.

The Mirror reports that Radamel Falcao has agreed personal terms with Chelsea. He's agreed to take a "huge cut" from his £265,000 weekly wage bill. Chelsea want him on a season long loan with no commitment at the end. Monaco are pushing for a loan fee, Chelsea to pick up his contract and a £30 million transfer next summer.

I wonder how much of it is related to his surgery? He was back on the field in about 7 months, pretty quickly for an ACL injury. Theo Walcott took more than a year to get back to where he was pre-injury.

I think Adam Bogdan on a free from Bolton is an upgrade for Liverpool in the back-up keeper stakes. Ings and Milner were cheap, but not sure how the squad sees them both fitting in. I've seen a few LFC boards suggesting a 4-3-2-1 with Milner partnering Henderson and Can as part of the three. But like you said, I'd rather he play up with Coutinho in a more advanced role. We'll see.

As for the "crazy rumours" part, Zlatan, Carlos Tevez and Jackson Martinez for starters. Yeah right. Recently, keep hearing alot about Benteke, Nathaniel Clyne and Mateo Kovacic. I'd be happy with the latter two. Not sure Benteke is worth the price they're asking.

Are our Villa fans happy?

Guardedly so, yes. Richards only got in 20 matches last season and Fiorentina took a pass on keeping him even though it would have only cost them a little more than a million pounds above his loan fee. That's not exactly the stuff of ringing endorsements. He's only been in 9 Premiere League matches since losing his place to Zabaleta a few years ago.

Still, anything like a return to his 2008-11 form and he'd be just a huge upgrade over any other options Villa have at right back. Hutton was our first choice when healthy and God know he's limited ... to be kind. Otherwise we saw a LOT of Bacuna at RB and he's a winger. So ... yeah. Happy enough.

Sadly, while you have to admire Weimann's work rate and compete level, his skill set just isn't high enough for those good attributes to translate into scoring chances and goals. And he's an attacking forward so that HAS to be the bottom line.

IMO you simply cannot afford to tie up money in both Weimann and his English alter ego Gabby Agbonlihor. One of those guys is fine. Two of them is overkill. I wish Andi nothing but the best as he moves along down the road. Derby is more his natural talent level and I hope he does great in the Championship.

Mandzukic's last three moves have been to the side that lost the Champions League finals the season before his arrival (Bayern in 2012, Atletico in 2014 and now Juventus).

So Liverpool are, hopefully, going to cash in Raheem Sterling at £50m in hopes of landing Brazilian Roberto Firmino from 1899 Hoffenheim (becoming our third Brazilian), Colombian-born Carlos Bacca (Sevilla) and Venezuelan Salomon Rondon from FC Zenit, or quite possibly two of the three. Bacca (aged 28) seems inconsistent with the line that they weren't going to dole out significant transfer money for a player aged 27 or older. Firmino would be top quality, and Rondon had a good year last year after signing on at Zenit from Rubin Kazan.

Liverpool seek to sign Firmino, Bacca and/or Rondon (http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/liverpool-fc-news-transfer-rumours-9504292)

LLiverpool have signed the Hoffenheim forward Roberto Firmino subject to a medical, the Premier League club have announced.

The 23-year-old Brazil international has agreed what Liverpool describe as “a long-term contract” and will undergo a medical once he completes his commitments at the Copa América. Firmino has scored 47 goals in 151 appearances during his four and a half years in Germany and has scored four times in nine international caps, including Sunday’s Copa América winner against Venezuela.

Still awaiting the photos on the team site (he's apparently on vacation in Vegas, so anything can happen in the 11th hour), but Nathaniel Clyne's arrival at Anfield is widely reported as imminent.

Liverpool have agreed a £12.5m deal for the Southampton right-back Nathaniel Clyne, who is set to become the club’s sixth signing of the summer. Clyne, who has been capped five times by England, will now undergo a medical at Liverpool and finalise his personal terms.

Nathaniel Clyne's pending arrival at Anfield (http://www.theguardian.com/football/2015/jun/25/nathaniel-clyne-liverpool-southampton)

It's one thing to spend money to get players the top teams weren't coveting (Mario Balotelli, Dejan Lovren, Alberto Moreno). It's another to get ones that they were (Firmino, Clyne). I'm hoping this early activity shows our side's serious intent. But we still lack a strong striking option to partner Daniel Sturridge (who is injury prone).

I think that is a stunningly good deal for Arsenal. He is a major upgrade in that position and he should help settle down the defenders in front of him as well.

If they can get a top defensive midfielder they will be right in the mix next year.

From Villa's perspective losing these two couldn't be more different. Given was already scheduled to depart and they signed a fresh backup at some point earlier in the week in the form of former Norwich keeper Mark Bunn. Pretty solid signing there. But Delph? God that hurts. He signed a 4 year extension only back in January and was (rightly so) wearing the armband. Not to mention that he's their best central midfielder by 1,000s of miles. But apparently he insisted on the low-ish departure fee that City will be snapping him up for ... like 8.5 million or so ... so I guess he had his eyes set on bigger fish.

As mentioned ... if he actually breaks into their regular rotation starting 11, I'd be surprised. So Arab oil money marginalizes yet another English footballer. Shocker, right?

On the upside, Villa addressed their need for quality at defensive midfield by bringing in Senegal's Idrissa Gueye from Lille. He's a pretty fair player who should be coming into his own at 25 years old.

Not really, Delph can only play as one of the Central midfielders really. So he is competing with Toure, Fernandinho and Fernando for playing time.

Milner could do that job but he was also subbing for Silva, Navas and Nasri in the wide attacking roles.

Last season especially Milner got a lot more starts due to the fact that Nasri was often injuried and when fit struggling for form.

Entirely correct. Early on Villa experimented with Delph on the left side and he was just terrible. He's only ever been comfortable in the middle of the pitch. Which is why that signing make no particular sense to me from City's point of view. They're already loaded in all aspects of midfield. Makes sense ... especially from Sinclair's point of view. Richards was there when the big money influx happened so it at least took a little while before he got replaced with somebody super expensive ... and foreign. Sinclair went there on the heels of two brilliant campaigns for Swansea only to never see the light of day for THREE years. He played a grand total of 13 times for City over three full seasons. Pitiful and I'm sure it didn't help his career development as he wasted the time from age 23 to 26.

A home grown rule is all well and good but if all it results in are good young players sitting on the bench for bigger clubs looking for fill out a roster how does that help develop English players?

The article makes it sound like he can be on the senior roster but still play with the U-21 squad. But it also sounds like City's academy is still a work in progress and lags behind the other top clubs.

And as much as that will hurt Villa, it's still a good piece of business. That's a nearly 20 million pound return on investment in a player we didn't develop from academy. Take that gain, find another striker and move on down the road.

And I will gladly take his production, though the recent injury history is cause for concern for me. We already have an injury-prone striker. Just hope this doesn't extend into a third straight season for him in the Prem.

Benteke's in good health now, so that medical should be a non-issue. He had been pretty durable before the last two years, so it's hard to judge how he will do going forward. But his style is based on power, not speed and his injuries have been leg-related ... so I doubt there's much there other than bad fortune.

Not at all. He was barely used while Pochettino tried to decide whether Paulinho or Capoue was the most hapless midfielder on the squad.

That being said, his pace wasn't really consistent with the pressing style that MP espouses, and his case wasn't helped by the emergence of Delle Alli in training. 19 years old, Football League YPOY (MK Dons), and apparently absolutely burning with passion. Notched a goal in his first match over the weekend. Keep an eye on that one.

Hoping that he comes out of the gate on fire, because in the two Liverpool groups I'm in on Facebook, opinion is sharply divided. I think the anti-Benteke concern is that some see him as one-dimensional, and others see him as too inconsistent. Well, I think there is still a big money outbound move. After being dropped on Saturday, I can't see any way that DeGea stays. And the Daily Star says that Mourinho is going to make another run at John Stones. That could top £30 million

We like those kid wingers at the Villa. Unless they think he can play with the senior team right away, this one is a bit curious though. Because they already have Grealish, a still relatively young Sinclair and about 3 or 4 fairly well thought of kids in the development program. Still, speed and skill are always welcome and Barca's kids are generally dripping with both. After a quick research trip, I just found that Barca thought enough of the kid to blood him in with senior appearances in both La Liga and in Champions League play over the last two years while he spent his time playing with Barca B. He's also decided to switch his national team eligibility to Mali (from Spain) so the kid's got some ambition it seems. So ... good?

OK, can someone explain this? American defender Tim Ream has passed his physical and will move from Bolton to Fulham when his work permit issues are worked out. He's made over 100 appearances for Bolton and has played for them since 2012. Why is there still a permit issue?

I think ... THINK, mind you ... that foreign players have to renew their permits when they change situations. I seem to recall that has been a minor holdup in a couple of deals within the Scottish Premiere League. Pretty sure it's just a formality.

I know it was always an issue in football manager. I remember trying to resign Brad Guzan with Villa and being unable to get the work permit even though he had been with the team obviously.

davemess

That's correct, anytime a player either moves clubs or signs an extension they have to apply for their Work Permit again.

When a player joins a club on a 3 year deal he is given a 3 year work permit which is not transferable to another employer (ie club).

Villa is going all sideways on me. Reports are that they are almost done with a deal for ANOTHER young wing player ... this time Adama Lilajic from Roma ... which would officially give them a million wingers and no proper center forward to finish anything. Ayew, Sinclair, Agbonlahor, Traore, Grealish and now Lilajic ... all natural wingers. The only real target men on the roster are Gestede (proven only at Championship level) and Kozak (really not worth mentioning).

While I applaud the continued infusion of speed and athleticism, this is starting to make less sense by the addition. Goals have been hard to come by and attacking play in the box has been sorely lacking ... for what look to me to be obvious reasons. FIND A TARGET FORWARD.

Earlier Real Madrid tried to lay the blame at Uniteds door but their timeline didn't seem to hold water imo.

Now United have released the following

Manchester United notes Real Madrid’s statement on the attempt to sign David De Gea and sell Navas to Manchester United. The Club feels compelled to provide some clarification with the following facts.

• Manchester United did not seek contact from Real Madrid for the sale of David. David is a key member of our squad and the club’s preference was not to sell.

• No offer was received for David until yesterday.

• At lunchtime yesterday, Real Madrid made its first offer to buy David. A deal was agreed between the clubs, which included Navas being transferred to Old Trafford. The deals were dependent on each other.

• In the last several hours of the process, with Navas at the Real Madrid training ground, Real Madrid were controlling the documentation processes of David, Navas and Real Madrid. Manchester United was in control only of the documentation of Manchester United.

• Manchester United sent transfer documents for both players to Real Madrid at 2042 BST. David’s documentation was returned by Real Madrid to Manchester United without the signatory page at 2232 BST.

• At 22:40 BST, minutes before the deadline, major changes to the documentation came through to Manchester United which immediately put the deals at risk.

• Only at 2255 BST were the documents that are needed to cancel David’s contract received by Manchester United from Real Madrid.

• At this point Navas’ documentation was still not returned by Real Madrid.

• At 2258 BST, the transfer agreement was sent back by Manchester United, uploaded onto TMS and accepted – all before the deadline.

• It is our understanding that the deals couldn’t happen because:

- Real Madrid didn’t upload David’s documents onto TMS in time (Manchester United did)

- Real Madrid didn’t upload David’s documents to the Spanish league in time, per reports it seems some 28 minutes after the deadline

• The fact that Manchester United filed the papers on time was acknowledged by the Football Association, who offered to support that claim in any discussions with FIFA. The Club offered this assistance, as well as its own timestamped documents to Real Madrid but they have chosen not to go down this route.

Manchester United acts appropriately and efficiently in its transfer dealings. The Club is delighted that its fan-favourite double Player of the Year, David de Gea, remains a Manchester United player.

http://www.manutd.com/en/News-And-Features/Football-News/2015/Sep/manchester-united-statement-in-response-to-real-madrid-comments-on-david-de-gea-transfer.aspx?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=post&utm_campaign=ManUtd

If I was de Gea I would be pretty hacked off at Real at this point, why the heck did they wait till the last day to make their first offer? And why did they totally botch the paperwork from their end?

It makes you wonder whether Madrid ever wanted to actually do this deal this summer. Maybe they always wanted to wait to get him on a free next summer but had talked themselves into a corner with De Gea and felt they had to make it appear they tried then try and dump the blame on United for it not going through.

A ... losing Van Dijk was pretty much the price for losing out on Champions League group play for Celtic. Dammit. He'll make a good one for Southampton though. He's a quality defender and very athletic.

B ... kind of glad that Villa backed away from the aging striker buffet if I'm honest. As much as they need a proven finisher I have serious doubts that Adebeyor or Berbatov would have accomplished anything other than cashing bank drafts.

C ... Lescott? OK. Hope he finds some form, but we need another CB in the mix since Okore can't seem to stay healthy. And it allowed them to remove the temptation/frustration that is Nathan Baker by loaning him out to the Cherries. That guy's never going to come good ... at least not for Villa.

Arsenal only signed Cech, no other team in the EPL made less than 5 signings this summer.

Highest Season Ticket prices in the league...... not sure I would be pleased if I was a supporter to see them spend just £10mill this summer.

You aren't wrong about that. It looks like I'm going to be in London for Relegation Sunday and Villa are closing out at the Emirates so I checked pricing. Holy crap. Pretty much triple what I've paid for Celtic and Villa home matches in the past. I'll probably still shell out, but jeez guys. No wonder your fans moan about the lack of investment.

I'm staying away from the Spurs board meltdown for a month or two. This travesty of a transfer window left so many key issues unresolved, even with all of the moves that were made, it's going to be a real mess. Good news is they probably won't have to waste their time in Europe next year. Kiss Hugo Lloris goodbye in the January window.

I dunno. Spurs generally do too much business too late in the window and then take until November to get their mess together. This roster doesn't seem all that short of enough talent to bubble along in their usual place in the table. They just got off to a slow start offensively. I bet they'll come around sooner staying pat than they would have done by bringing in four guys in a week.

Maybe that's just me ...

All that is true, but they're looking at either putting a lot of square pegs in a round striker hole, or running Kane into the ground, and nobody wants to do that. Getting a striker was the one thing they HAD to get done, and Levy dallied too long thinking he had Berahino in the bag.
