Jake Allen signed to 2 year contract extension @ $2,875M AAV - Starting in 2021-22

also 2.8 mill is the going rate for a high end backup. Halak and Khudobin both made around that.

Look what paying the minimum got us before

No issue there but Price is still making $10.5m. Those you mentioned aren't playing behind a $10.5M goalie.

I find it interesting and telling that Allen would eagerly jump on a below market deal. Makes me wonder how many good assets will potentially be available post arbitration, and how that could force a complete glut in the market place driving down UFA values even more...

Starting to look as if present environment is made for bargain bin shopping which MB specializes in

Jake's numbers aren't all that great

better be , or why bother grooming Primeau

it's better for a young goaltender to play often then sitting on the bench 80% of the time. Technically, it's better to bring goaltender in the fold a few years later than earlier.

Allen's number are great when he doesn't have to play a lot of games. You see his effectiveness take a dip when he has to assume the burden of the load. His stats seems to suggests he works a lot better with limited games. I'm guessing this is what the habs are seeing here.

his carreer stats are GAA is 2.5 and he is a .913 SV% which is far better than what we had in recent years from our backup. In the playoff, his carreer stats are 2.06 and .924 which is excellent.

last year, he got a reduce role with 24 starts which allowed him to show a better 2.15 GA and .927 SA% which was an improvement to the 3 previous years were he played between 46 and 64 games.

I don't get the comment his numbers aren't great. He is no Price, but for a backup, that is very respectable.

Let's look at some of the factors at play shall we?

1) Condensed schedule coming up, do you really want to roll with Primeau? No. Next season is flat cap too and considering goalies not named Price won a total of 3 games this season, I think MB got fed up with the bleeding of points in the standings.

2) The Habs need to expose a goalie to the expansion draft. Primeau isn't eligible so who do they expose? The only goalie they could possibly expose is McNiven but that would mean giving him a qualifying offer and I doubt Seattle takes him so do you really want to qualify him? I think not.

3) MB figures he has 2-3 years to win, having a capable backup that has been a starter is good to spell Price more and even take over should Price get hurt again.

I really think these were the sort of issues MB was thinking about when signing him.
