OT: WWE/MMA/Boxing Thread

I know there is covid involved but it is really weird how the ufc seems to often not have the best fighter/next in line fight for championships anymore

They still do. I mean, if Whitaker's the most logical candidate, the Italian Meathead is right behind him.

It's not like when they had Bisping fight Dan Henderson when he was ranked 10th or so.

I have no issue with this.

The more egregious example is Jones-Ngannou fight being skipped over because, as usual, the UFC will never allow themselves to be leveraged.

In the very, and I do mean very, rare chances that the UFC does get leveraged (see Masvidal getting a better contract to fight Usman the first time around), they still give up very little of consequence.

I get the bit about timelines though. Izzy fought in early March and didn't take much damage at all. If he's ready to go on a 12 week turnaround, why not get another fight in? I don't know the details of Izzy's last deal with UFC, but based on his increased pay day against Gastelum, I'm assuming that it started then. He's 5 fights in since then, maybe he's either in the new deal now and wants the pay day (plus champion ppv points) or maybe this is the last fight of the deal (5-6 fight deals seem to be about the max anyone ever signs) and he wants to be free and clear before rematch negotiations (he's pulling about 600K to show right now, but I imagine that his next contract will be 7 figures to show)

One of the many downsides of the UFC business model is that a marketable fighter makes about as much for beating a relative non threat as they do for fighting a very legitimate championship level fighter and we're well past the point where chasing a warriors honour in there means anything. It's naked business, pure and simple. Dana makes sure of that with the way he treats fighters.

Oh, I was just thinking bigger picture of how the ufc are lining up their fights to be able to get the winner of blah blah match to fight for the title next. Or not have a challenger sit for 6, 9, 12 months waiting type of deal.

Like it’s no surprise that Robert had to deal with Australia and Q. Why put his fight after the champ if his fight would most likely determine who’s next for the shot at the belt.

In a covid world, I don't think they're thinking that far ahead with their scheduling man. Very fly by the seat of your pants stuff for the last 12 months.

They're way more worried about "book shows, make money" than anything else.

and as I kind of touched on in my last post, they're not paying these guys enough to sit back and wait for the big fights. Similar calibre fights in the boxing world as Bobby-Izzy would have a total purse in the 15-25 million dollar range (or more). It would make a shit ton of business sense for both guys to just make that happen now. Instead though, Izzy is looking at 600K + bonuses & points to fight Vettori, or 600K + bonused & points to fight Bobby. There's no financial incentive for Izzy to sit and wait.

Yes and no. Early covid days I get it.

Few examples...for this one, Dana knew the winner was fighting izzy. Wasn’t a fly by the beat of your pants. Even if you consider Tills, same deal. Should be made earlier to deal with UK protocols.

Or you have Figueiredo and Moreno on the same damn card and I knew it was the wrong fight for each.

Why everyone has so much catch up - the Fucken pre-prelims are more entertaining than the entire PFL last night

Hopefully, this will stop the amount of calf kicks going on tbh. To be it’s the same as kicking a guy to the cup - just not fair 😂

Guys are starting to figure out how to check the calf kick, which is the dangerous one for leg breaks. I could see more guys going back to standard inside and outside leg kicks though. You're not going to break your leg on kicking the back of the hamstring.
