The Official 2026 Off-Season Thread: Revenge of the Nerds

To be fair, neither are Stenberg's. Stenberg is also old for the draft class (he'll be 19 by the start of the season), while Malhotra isn't quite 18 yet.

Fwiw, Stenberg was always the one I didn't get at the top of the draft. I don't see a reason to take him over Reid or Carels and there's a good argument for Malhotra to be taken before him based on age and position. Shit, there's an argument for Smits to to be in that conversation as well.
Stenberg will be very good. Don’t know about elite.

Based purely on his SHL offensive comparables and then the eye testy scouting reports, he's a 2 way Kevin Kiala that plays the right way. Which sounds like a really nice player but not one I would take at the top of the draft when there are 3-4 potential #1 defenders, a potential #1 centre and obviously McKenna.

I guess CJ has beclowned himself so thoroughly with this Matthews stuff that at this point he feels he's got to keep doubling down in the faint hope that he ends up being "right". Then when Matthews shows up to camp in the fall, he'll either start pushing the idea the Leafs' off-season changed Auston's mind, or he'll go the Dreger route and hope everybody just forgets about the whole thing.

What are the odds of Matthews showing up at the draft to welcome McKenna to the NHL?

That’d be a lovely way to shit on all of the “insiders”. And it would be a really cool moment if we had the three current 1st overall picks in the organization—Auston, JT & Mats—up there on the stage to welcome McKenna aboard.

Seems almost obvious tbh.

Is this a serious question?

It should be, but isn't.

Seriously though, what the fuck are these people doing? How do these people's bosses not see what they're doing and step in? These guys aren't random fucking bloggers, they work for multi billion dollar media organizations.

Because negativity drives clicks and it's by far the largest following of any team in the league. You capture a large of portion of the disenfranchised, angry fanbase as well as all the haters that love reading about what a disaster the Leafs are.

The Leafs could win the Cup and in a week there would be more "articles" about how they won't be able to keep the roster, is it time to ship this player out etc.
