The Official 2026 Off-Season Thread: Revenge of the Nerds

Gallant = simple systems + roll lines + offense from pace + minimal adjustments

Berube = simple but heavier + accountability + identity

Laviolette = structured aggression + forecheck layers + D activation

Babcock = rigid structure + controlled exits + possession‑first

AI summary of the 4

What the sources say about Gallant
  • Gallant is not a very tactical coach and is averse to analytics.
  • His tenure wears thin quickly, often losing the room within 2–3 years.
  • He is seen as a players’ coach, especially early on, but becomes complacent and avoids holding players accountable.
  • Compared to Laviolette, Gallant provides more offense but weaker defensive structure.
This gives us a clear profile: simple, vibes‑based, low‑adjustment, offense‑leaning, short shelf life.

Yeah maybe not so good

Chayka will take any trade proposal to any player who has trade protection.

Yowza, what a development!

As I thought, nothing has even been asked of Rielly, and nothing will unless they actually get a trade they like fall in their laps. This is not a guy who you just dump at the side of the street.

If he's cooked he might be.

This could be the last year to move off him. If he's terrible in a new system run by data driven guys, he's toxic

I wonder if his two years left on his contract, or his captain status, or brand new management, or 1st overall, or new players incoming had anything to do with it.

Interesting list.

Seems to have a lot of names we’ve talked to.

This is still the kind of thing I want to see, I think. Someone new, not an NHL retread.

Though I think I would at least want them to have coaching experience and some notable accomplishments as a coach from some other level of hockey. Someone with zero coaching experience at all at any level like Pavelski seems nuts.
