New York Yankees (2010-2013)

Re: New York Yankees

To no one's surprise, Jacoby Ellsbury said today that he has been told he will play center field and bat leadoff.

Brett Gardner will play left field and likely hit at the bottom of the order.

Re: New York Yankees

Cuban shortstop Aledmys Diaz is now eligible to sign with a major-league team.

The Yankees are expected to be heavily involved.

Re: New York Yankees

JesseSanchezMLB: Aledmys Diaz (SS) & Odrisamer Despaigne (RHP) Florida showcase tour continues. Both Cuban prospects expected to work out for NYY on Thursday.

The Yankees are reportedly one of seven teams in talks with Diaz.

Re: New York Yankees

The Yankees have agreed to a minor-league deal with RHP Andrew Bailey.

The incentive-based pact is for a base salary of $2.5 million, if Bailey makes the Major League roster, which also would trigger a 2015 option or buyout.

Bailey is out until midseason after undergoing shoulder surgery in 2013.

Re: New York Yankees

The Yankees have agreed to a four-year, $52 million extension with OF Brett Gardner.

The deal includes a $12.5 million fifth-year option (or $2 million buyout) that would bring the deal to $62.5 million.

There is no no-trade clause included in the deal that begins in 2015.

Re: New York Yankees

Girardi announced the Yankees first four spring-training starters today: Vidal Nuno, Ivan Nova, David Phelps and Adam Warren.

Re: New York Yankees

Newest reports say the Yankees are passing on Cubans Aledmys Diaz and Odrisamer Despaigne.

Must not have liked what they saw at the private workout last week.

Re: New York Yankees

Buster Olney: Derek Jeter looks like he's moving the way that he did in 2012, before his ankle injury, and when he had a strong year at the plate.

Good news for the Yankees.

Re: New York Yankees

Buster Olney: Ichiro Suzuki does not have a no-trade clause and he appears to be the odd man out in the NYY outfield.

Still hoping they can move him for a bullpen arm or infield depth.

Re: New York Yankees

Dellin Betances has now thrown 6.1 innings of scoreless ball this spring. Making a strong case to win a bullpen spot out of camp.

Re: New York Yankees

The Yankees have announced their first two cuts of the spring.

Jose Ramirez (RHP) was optioned to Triple-A and Francisco Rondon (LHP) was assigned to minor-league camp.

Re: New York Yankees

Chad Jennings: I was told today that a few teams have been specifically scouting Francisco Cervelli as a potential trade target. That said, Cervelli's trade value is seen as fairly limited. A non-Yankees source suggested a team might be willing to trade one of its own out-of-options player for him; basically an excess-for-excess swap. It seems that teams realize Cervelli could be expendable, so they're checking on him. (LINK)

Wouldn't be surprised at all to see one of Cervelli, Austin Romine or John Ryan Murphy traded before the season starts.

Re: New York Yankees

Peter Gammons: Several teams looking for a third baseman are watching Houston's Matt Dominguez. "The Yankees could be a player here," says one scout.

The 25-year-old hit .241/.286/.403 (89 wRC+) with 21 homers and 77 RBI in 589 plate appearances in 2013.

Re: New York Yankees

The Yankees have announced three more cuts.

Slade Heathcott (OF) and Nik Turley (LHP) were optioned to Triple-A; Gary Sanchez (C) was optioned to Double-A.

Re: New York Yankees

There's been some talk today that a Francisco Cervelli trade could be coming.

Cervelli has been catching a lot of Masahiro Tanaka, but Brian McCann was scratched from the Panama trip to catch Tanaka and Hiroki Kuroda on Sunday-Monday.

Could be nothing but might be something. Stay tuned.

Re: New York Yankees

Two more cuts today.

Bryan Mitchell (RHP) has been optioned to Triple-A; Jose Campos (RHP) has been option to Single-A.

Re: New York Yankees

One more cut.

Manny Banuelos (LHP) has been optioned to Single-A.

ManBan had an outside chance at a bullpen spot, but struggled in his two spring training appearances. The arm strength is there but he's not ready for the big time just yet.

Re: New York Yankees

The Yankees announced 12 cuts this afternoon.

Ramon Flores (OF) was optioned to Triple-A; Francisco Arcia (C), Tyler Austin (OF), Bruce Billings (RHP), Robert Coello (RHP), Brian Gordon (RHP), Corban Joseph (INF),
Mark Montgomery (RHP), Pete O'Brien (C), Jose Pirela (INF), Mason Williams (OF) and Chase Whitley (RHP) were all sent to minor-league camp.

Re: New York Yankees

Is it time to designate Preston Claiborne for assignment?

I would be fine with this. He started out hot last season but has been poor since then, to end the season and in spring training.
Guys like Daley, Leroux and Lewis have clearly out-pitched him this spring, plus there's always the chance Claiborne gets through waivers and you have even more pitching depth.
