GDT: Canes v. Oilers 2/16 4:00

Extra point would have resulted in movement tonight as Columbus lost in a shootout and Leafs lost.

Did gain a point on the Flyers who did not play. So now one point behind WC2 with a game in hand.

Do not believe I even heard Dzingel’s name mentioned other than the lines announcement.

Haula with no shots on goal in 18:45 minutes of ice time.

So much for the off-season skill acquisitions.

Haula hasn’t been the same since returning from injury. 3C is Geekie’s to lose in camp next year. Dzingel hasn’t been the same since leaving Ottawa.

It's just that, if you're going to feature a team of small, speedy skill guys, they have to score. A lot. Otherwise you're just getting manhandled.

Carolina's depth lines got their butts kicked by a glorified AHL team. So, congrats on that. Aho's line matched the Oilers. All you needed was one of the rest of those guys to kick one in against a bad goaltender, a shaky, struggling defense and a bunch of 4th line forwards. And ... nope. Pitiful effort from the support forwards. Absolutely pitiful. The second unit was particularly frustrating, but they all were bad. Focus on Dzingle and Huala all you want ... and fair enough, because they sucked yesterday ... but Wallmark has been terrible since he cooled off from that hot streak he was on while Huala was out. McGinn is accomplishing nothing, Staal has been awful in the offensive zone and Foegele was turning it over for fun yesterday. The whole lot of them stunk.

I told the wife on the way to that game that Edmonton basically can't score unless they get power play chances, so it would nice if we got a sanely officiated game. And bang ... they call a high stick on Svech when Yamamoto hit himself with his own bloody stick, and we're off to the races. And look, officiating didn't cost Carolina two points yesterday but that pair of refs is embarrassing. St Laurent is the worst regular rotation official I've seen in decades, and that other guy is in his first year as a full timer ... I think. That a professional league that claims to be the best in the world for its sport is willing to roll those two morons out for a regular season game says a lot about where we are at the moment.

I missed this game but I read there were 7 shots by Hurricane's centers 6 by Aho....
This is not a recipe for success.

Again ... the first line was great. The other three lines were uniformly awful. Huala's group at least generated some possession time, but they did pretty much nothing with it. The other two lines ... other than Dzingle pinging a point blank scoring chance into Smith's chest logo I don't remember that lot doing pretty much anything at all. That game was the poster child for why loading up the top line can be problematic.

I was talking about how Staal is contributing almost nothing (except FO wins) and asked my buddy if Wallmark was even on the ice - he's been Mr. Invisible lately. While I don't expect huge things from him, he's always been a reliably competent support player - but not so much in the 2nd half of the season. Our goalies are what they are and we really can't expect much more out of them, but our support lines have been abysmal lately.

What a disappointing game... So much on the line and a challenger coming with missing parts. Yet, here we are, walking away with a concession point.

No secondary scoring. Where are Haula, Dzingel, Necas or Foegele? Staal? I thought Haula and Dzingel were to make our power play better and that power play looked like an unorganized fire drill at times. Necas has wheels, but really too many passes in OT. But the bone headed play by TVR to give EDM their 3rd goal was just a dumb, dumb, dumb decision. Sit him, trade him or shoot him, but bring up Bean.

The forward was on his butt, no more a threat to TVR than I was. And he played that worse than a mite playing his first game on D.

On a positive note, Fleury edged out Slavin for high CF% for D-men at 57.9% (% of Corsi For events vs. opponents while on ice).

And while there, the entire first line lead the team in CF% from Aho's 64.9% to Svetchnikov's 62.9% with Teravainen in between.

Fleury also had 3 shots on goal and while looking at third period play-by-play to see if any of his 14 minutes of ice time were there (they were) I saw an additional blocked shot and one that went wide. So he was definitely listening to the coaches (and crowd?) telling him to shoot.

Aho led shots on goal with 6 (of the 7 total taken by centers), Svetchnikov with 4, and even Teravainen with 2 shots on goal. First line was 39% of all shots on goal.

Fleury made some weird looking choices in the offensive zone, but was otherwise quite good. Note that he has been increasingly solid for a couple of weeks now. Giving him a more veteran partner helped, for sure. TVR on the other hand is 100% glomming off of Slavin for any numbers he generates. I know he scored in that game, but he was NOT good the rest of the way and Brindy ended up having to shift Pesce to Slavin's pairing at times to settle down Draisaitl's line. Even if Fleury can keep it up and actually play an above replacement game, we're still dragging one total passenger around out there on D every night.

You can’t expect to put TVR out and expect him to handle guys like Draisaitl. And those guys are creative enough to isolate him in situations where his partner can’t help. On the other hand if we don’t put him with Slavin we end up with some pairings that are complete disasters. Or running 22 and 74 into the ice. Or both. We need help on D. I guess I get not wanting to put Bean in that situation but we gotta do something.

None of this justifies the complete no show of 9 of 12 forwards. and putting 20,86 and 37 together shouldn’t cause the other lines to be worthless.

Bean would be a swap for Fleury, IMO ... you can't ask him to play his off side and we're unbalanced as it is with Eddy playing the off side. The only righty ready to go is probably Priskie. I hear he's rounding into the AHL game nicely since Christmas after some understandable early adjustment time. But I'm fairly sure he's not ready to come out of the oven just yet. The other option would be McKeown but I'm pretty* sure nobody sees him as an upgrade over TVR.
