The official NFL thread

Nah, this just isn't how you run an organization. The owner picks the coach, and the GM and coach both report directly to the owner. And the coach and GM don't get along, so they fire the GM after a massively important offseason for the future of this team to hire the coaches buddy. Its such a mess.

Success in sports starts at the top. There is no way around that. Overly involved ownership with no plan never lead a team to success. The Johnsons have created mess after mess.

We've seen this play out for years with the Leafs until Lieweke came aboard and MLSE stepped back and hired good people, and let them work. Thats the only path to success.

The organizational structure of the Jets is untenable. Best case scenario, if a guy like Douglas would even want to come here, you bring in a guy like Douglas who is tied to the coach and his roster that was put together by someone else. Worst case scenario you bring in another GM, who didn't hire the coach, and who the coach doesn't report to anyway. Its a shit show.

You have to have a plan and stick to it. Can't just consistently fly by the seat of your pants.

People in the press & fans can say "no plan"....but if we hire the guy Glazer, La Canfora, etc all said we were gonna hire ends up our GM. The guy who was rumored to be going to Miami to GM if Gase stayed, the guy who worked with Gase in Chicago.....the guy who learned his craft under Ozzie Newsome for 16 years, was the top talent evaluator & right hand man of Howie Roseman & the co-architect of their SB team. The guy virtually everyone views as the top available GM candidate.

It'll be pretty clear (to me) that they were a tandem hire.....

You just flat out aren't getting Douglas from the Eagles prior to the draft & free agency tho, it's not happening.

The only way it even has a chance to work is if Douglas is given full autonomy, including the ability to fire Gase, and Johnson steps away.

And if you plan is to 100% fire a GM, but let him spend $150 million in the offseason and run a draft first then your plan is a poor one. I wouldn't brag about that plan. Fire Mac, let Heimerdinger run the draft and stay out of spending stupid money in free agency. Then give your GM a chance.

Why are you letting the guy you want to fire make important decisions that will affect the franchise, and the next GM for years. Its like letting Chia sign Koskanen, or Fletcher trade Steen/Colaiacovo only with exponentially more decisions.

So you think we should have abstained from Free Agency, just because we couldn't hire Douglas until now?

Da fuq?

Abstain from making decisions with long term implications. Of course. If you know you are firiing your GM after free agency its a no brainier.

Do you think the Leafs should have let Fletcher trade Steen, or the Oilers should have let Chia resign Kostaken? Of course not. It makes no sense.

You letting the guy you want to fire handcuff the guy you believe can lead your team to success.

I mean its not like the Jets have Super Bowl hopes this year. Throwing away this season doesn't have any dramatic long term implications.

Or that the next GM wouldn't love to have $100+ mill in cap space next year to make an impact on their team.

Trading players isn't the same as abstaining from acquiring talent.

If you think we should have just sat on our money, and not signed Bell, Mosley, Crowder, etc....just because we were hiring Douglas. That's absurd.

Nah. Its the exact same thing. Letting the guy you don't have faith in making key decisions with long term implications. There is literally no difference.

What's absurd is not letting Douglas make those decisions, if they 100% knew he would be GM.

You give the guy a clean slate and the best chance you can to succeed.

You want to win while your QB is on his team friendly deal....trust me, Douglas would must prefer the talent. Than us having done literally nothing during free agency. That's absurd.

We landed one of the best middle linebackers and running backs on the planet for christ sakes.

We might land the top MLB, top RB, top GM, top slot WR, and top IDL prospect....that were on the market this offseason, and people are upset by it. :lol

So wait. They are going to give a huge role to a NFL college scouting expert and the smart move was to do this after the draft? Ok.

I'm hardly going to be upset because we're looking to upgrade from a very average/mediocre GM.

Nor that he has a surprisingly successful offseason beforehand either.

If we could have hired Douglas in January to run our offseason, I'd have preferred that, but that wasn't on the table.

You don't hire your new scouting department weeks before the draft, lol.

This is exactly when new scouting departments are put in place. Even when new GMs take over, they often don't remove the old scouting staff, until after that offaeasons draft....specifically for that reason. Draft prep is a year long process.

We had a great offseason with Mac (legit one of his best imo)....but upgrading from Mac/Heimerdinger to Douglas/Jeremiah is such a no brainer ....only SOJ fans could be upset by it.

Jeremiah & Douglas have a history together in Baltimore. Nice.

Jeremiah also loves Quinnen & Sam (had Sam graded as his highest graded QB over the past 4 drafts.).

Really really hope this all comes to fruition. Douglas/Jeremiah would be a killer combo.
