Yeah, it's AHL depth. He became team captain after they traded Byron Froese.
I probably work too much for my own good.

He was traded from Calgary, the team with probably the best roster of d-men in the league from top to bottom, for virtually nothing. Why wasn't he good enough to be their #8 d-man? It's not a question of money, he made close to nothing. While Rasmus Andersson made the team out of camp, it's not a question of prospects pushing him out.

I think he's a good player, don't get me wrong, I'm just not sure he's a player on a team that's actually good. One of those players that might look good on a bad roster, but wouldn't actually make it on a good team.
the same team that gave away byron?

athletic had a good article on him showing how he actually improved his partners stats by quite a bit

these are the types you sign instead of alzner

Kulak is capable but Calgary has an abundance of better D in their system and especially on their roster. Kulak was simply odd man out. He's a bottom pairing guy with maybe the possibility of second pairing. Maybe.

2nd pairing... maybe for a bad team.

I think his upside is a 2nd pairing, i have no issues with this signing, the guy has 3 years to prove his worth, plus he is an old team mate of 11....

Not only did Kulak manage to survive in the top-four, he thrived, and he improved his partner’s numbers as well. Whether it was shot control (Corsi for), expected goals for or actual goals for, Kulak was a positive influence.
But what it does show is that the Canadiens don’t necessarily have to place all their hopes in Mete to lead the charge on the left side. Kulak is more than capable of holding the fort while Mete continues to develop into a solid defenceman. In many ways, Kulak is the player the Canadiens are hoping Mete eventually becomes.

Good article that has some eye test stuff for you as well.

    Paywall alert though.

That was a good read, thanks. By the numbers presented in the article, Kulak and Petry are the pairing that should be used.

They were way off on their contract estimate though, Kulak should get $3.7M? Insane. Signing him below $2M was a good move.

I read that and it tells me they don’t place much emphasis on analytics, despite what the author says.

in case anyone missed it, and forgot this guy.

The Montreal Canadiens have signed defenceman Gustav Olofsson to a one-year, two-way contract.

The deal will pay Olofsson US$700,000 in the NHL and $235,000 in the American Hockey League, with $300,000 in guaranteed salary.

The six-foot-three, 196 pound Swede played two games with AHL Laval last season, recording one assist. He suffered a season-ending shoulder injury on Oct. 19.

Olofsson has played 56 NHL games with the Minnesota Wild, who drafted him 46th overall in 2013.

As I pointed out in another thread, the price for O'Reilly would have been Poehling, a 1st and a 2nd. I like O'Reilly and he would have been a great fit here, but I don't feel we were at a point where acquiring him made sense for us. We need a guy like O'Reilly but we also need those picks and Poehling might become a pretty good player as well. For a team like St.Louis who was contending and trying to win now, it made a lot of sense.

Yeah. I don't know how you can justify signing Waked, Verbeek and Pezzetta (all players who can't even dream of playing a game in the NHL) but not sign those two.

They're longshots, but **** it, they're better prospects than the three that were just mentioned.

My only caveat is, do they know more about Tyszka's medical history because of that injury in the beginning of the year? And even then, I don't buy it.
I probably work too much for my own good.
