Around the League - Regular Season 2018-19

Well in today's NHL you can be a victim of your own success... Leafs can't afford to pay them all before even winning a stanley cup...so funny.

It happens to all good teams ...no one can keep a team intact financially long term cup or no cup

Not sure why you think that.

Marner, Tavares, Matthews, Andersen and Rielly will be Leafs for a long time.

If they have to trade Nylander for a 1st rounder and a couple good prospects, so be it.

Don't you think this entire cap drama is overhyped a bit? It's not like these young players can't be moved for strong assets. It's overall a nice problem to have. A lot of teams wish they had the same issues. In fact, teams like Winnipeg and Tampa are in as much, if not more cap issues. The difference is those teams are left alone by the media and other fans(It's not like those cores have won cups).
The only young player that may be sacrificed is Nylander. That's it. Leafs have the 3rd most cap room right now and are #1 if they put Hortion on LTIR.

The fantasy Matthews leaving for broke-ass Arizona offer sheets are sad. He and Marner will be kept no matter what they ask.

Those teams are worse off because NTC`s have kicked in for their stars making a fair hockey deal harder to do .

I wouldn`t be surprised if Dubas trades Kadri this summer for a kings ransom to stockpile young assets to help with the cap .

It will be interesting with Laine ....How do you give him 10+ when across your locker you have Scheiffle who is a much better player than Laine making les than 7 mil.

Brady Tkachuk, 31pts in 40 games in the NCAA, 16 points in 14 games in the NHL.

I liked the kid a lot coming into the draft but even I am a bit surprised by how effective he's been and so quickly.

You were bang on GW , he has been great and might be challenging Elias Gretzky for the Calder.

Looks like the new wave of PF ...big , skilled, hands, can skate and create scoring chances.

Ask yourself though Burton, when you have Tavares at 11, Matthews at 12.5 and Marner at say 11 and Nylander at 8, that doesn't leave all that much for the rest of the team.

Yes, the Leafs played it right and drafted well. Key moves as well included hiiring the right people to ice a deliberately bad team , one with free agent signings like Pierre Parenteau and Brad Boyes that led to drafting Matthews.Deliberate tank job. Unfortunate that type of system is rewarded. The Leafs only got better after they got really, really bad.To their credit as well, they had drafted well also in the years immediately prior to that, and did other smart thingsl ike finding suckers for Phanuef and trading Daniel Winnik twice for picks, etc. .

Terrible system though, rewarding incompetency or tanking with high draft picks..

What terrible system ... we got the third pick for IMCOMPETANCY

Nylander will be gone in the summer if he resigns ... his days are numbered IMO

When you have Austin and Marner for a decade your in good shape . I would gladly take their cap issues to deal with .

Good thing they have guys like Reilly, Kadri and Andersen on steals.
Andersen is making less than half of what Price is right now. (Andersen has .932 save %, Price .897%)

BTW, to counter the argument the Leafs "Tanked" so much. In 2015-16 the Leafs had 15 more points than last place Buffalo the season before, and 21 points more than Colorado the season after who finished last. They also hired an elite coach the summer prior to that season.
If you go back a decade, you'll be hard pressed to find a better team that finished last.
Buffalo totally tanked the Matthews/Eichel year.

I'd love to have Leafs' problems.

The NHL star player has always given $ back to the team , they never took their bigger share of the cap .

The other 3 big sports the stars go for the jugular . Its a trend that hockey inevitably was going to follow .

You will have 5-7 players eating 60-70 percent of the cap and the rest scrambling for income .

The middle class will get wiped out in a few years settling for 1-2 year deals .

I have no issues with tanking when you are stuck in the middle for many years .

No point retaining aging vets or signing clowns like Alzner only to continue stinking .
