2018-19 Miscellaneous News Thread

Hypothetically, would it be possible for Rask to clear waivers and have that career resurgence in Charlotte?

I mean, yeah. I would guess that move wouldn't come until Staal is ready to return though. Unless they want to seriously play NHL hockey with Greg McKegg and Clark Bishop making up half of their group of 4 centers. That seems ... unlikely.

Crap, that is scary. Unless there is some other trade bringing a center in, expect to keep seeing Rask. Hopefully he starts to wake up.

By the same token, Staal is close to healthy. Say you get him back after the break and decide to let Rask try to find something ... anything ... at the AHL level for a month or so. You wouldn't be any worse off than you are right now. And if some sucker GM decided to take that $4 million a year we're throwing into Rask's stick bag in return for next to nothing ... fine. Honestly, I'd rather do that than continue to act like it's OK that we're paying that guy $4 million this season for a point every five games.

The NHL and NHLPA met again and jointly concluded there will not be a World Cup in 2020. One of the hangups was playing the World Cup and either party opting out of the CBA in the same month. That doesn’t necessarily mean we’re headed to another lockout, and we’re still 20 months away, but to already rule out playing can’t be a particularly good sign.

Yeah. I'm going to have to chase down some reporting on this stuff. I saw a couple of mentions that the PA would agree to extend the current CBA, but this little snag makes me wonder if that wasn't spin from one side or another. And let's be honest ... the fact that conditions probably don't justify either side derailing an extension does NOT mean it won't happen. This is the NHL and labor disfunction is ALWAYS an option.

You know what? Do another lock out and allow me to adjust my free time and I might just quit and find more creative things to do with that time. As it is now, the home town team is on the brink of give a crap and I couldn't care lees about the rest of the league. So, go ahead ... I double dog dare you.

It’s also really bad optics as the new Seattle franchise starts up in 2020. Hello Pacific Northwest! Welcome to the league! Here is a lockout for your first season.

Look ... there's nothing in the macro-economy of the game that would warrant either a strike or a lockout. In the big picture, both the players and the owners are at least as well off as they were one year into the new agreement. Yes, I feel like the Cap has increased more than the owners anticipated, but that's due to the underlying revenues that go into the equation. The players didn't get a great deal in the last CBA in a lot of respects, but the league is bigger which means more opportunities for contracts ... and in general, salaries are trending up. I think there's a LOT of room to negotiate on issues such as Olympics, World Cups, player safety, etc ... but enough to strike or lockout? Not even close.

Now, should one party or the other decide to press the issue, you all know how labor negotiations in the NHL can go from 0 to 60 in about a millisecond, so never bet on sanity. But I simply don't see a reason for a stoppage that even Bettman or Bill Daley could try to sell to the public with a straight face. Honestly, the one looming issue is the inevitable shrinkage of TV revenues. We're already in sight of the rollback of regional cable networks, which are a big source of local club revenue. Radio is more or less done producing significant revenues on a local level as well. And if the owners know something they haven't shared about the next iteration of the two big league TV deals ... THEN we're going to see some fireworks. Retrenching is never fun, and never easy.

Darren Dreger tweeted that the Sens and Duchene are continuing discussions on an extension. Looking like $8-9 million AAV for 8 years, somewhere between $65-75 million.

NHL is getting scary. $9M per for Duchene sounds insane. His career-best season is 70 points. $7.5-$8M seems more realistic. It will be interesting to see where he ends up and slots on this Cap hit list.

Check out the great Nylander signing! Only Toronto can screw up a great young core with some bad decisions!

Next time anyone wants to complain about Don Waddell, remember that it could be worse. We could be Oilers fans and stuck with Peter Chiarelli.

The Oilers put Hurricanes legend Ty Rattie and Ryan Spooner on waivers today. When Spooner clears waivers, the Oilers will have nothing to show for the Jordan Eberle trade. They sent him to the Isles for Ryan Strome. Two months ago, he traded Strome to the Rangers for Spooner, with the Rangers retaining $900k of Spooner’s $4 million cap hit. That contract still has 1 more year to run.

Someone updated Chiarelli’s Wikipedia entry today.

He is notorious for making dozens of one sided trades always to the demise of his own teams and ruining Connor McDavid's prime years with the Edmonton Oilers.

What was Rattie's issue? His stats seem like the typical "can't make it translate to the NHL" type...

Rattie = Zykov = Boychuk = Chris Terry. I'm not sure exactly what the specific issue is, but there is one that prevent them from being able to stick. Consistency is the generic problem I believe with these types of players.

Or their talent maxes out as an AHL player.

It's almost always either skating or mentality when a player fails to stick in the National league but continues to produce in the A. Rattie wasn't here long enough for me to judge, but it was definitely a skating issue with Terry and probably a combination of the two with Zykov. Boychuk's problems were all between the ears.

Problem being, when you get to the top level you aren't getting by on pure talent and/or athleticism anymore unless you're just a freak. That happens, but even the stupidly talented have to figure out how to play the NHL game if they want to be consistent.
