2018-19 Canes Prospect and Calder Cup Winning Charlotte Checkers Thread

Re: 2018-19 Canes Prospect and Cherkers Thread

Checkers dominance exhibited not only in the regular season with their league-leading total points (as HNIM noted) but also in number of wins with a 67.1% win rate (basically winning 2 out of every 3 games played with eight loser points added).

Undefeated throughout the regular season and the playoffs when winning after two periods. That's a very impressive record.

And blazed through the playoffs with a 79% win rate (basically winning 4 out of 5 games played) only losing four out of nineteen games played.

Very impressive showing for a team that continuously had us poaching players they might have normally expected to have on their roster.

A season to remember.

only losing four out of nineteen games played.

And only losing two out of nineteen in regulation.

Fourteen of the fifteen wins were in regulation, and over half of the wins were by three or more goals.

Yeah, at one point early in the Checkers playoffs we had their second line center (Brown), 4th line center (Bishop), top pair D (Bean) and 2nd pair D (Fleury) up with the Canes. Not to mention that they could well have been planning on Foegele and Kegger being in Charlotte all season. It was a heck of a year for the guys, no doubt.

Congratulations to the Checkers (we may now have to change the name of this thread) on a job well done! Building a confident AHL team should do nothing but make us better when we call individual players up for support. And for the most part, the call-ups this season performed admirably!

I might just change the name ... in honor of the win.

And early in the first round they saw Carrick suspended for 3 games and Sanguinetti suspended for one game while those Cane call ups were gone at the same time. The Checkers were a very deep team, they played most of the second half and all of the playoffs without Janne Kukkonen who arguably would be top forward on that team based on skill and talent. The moves to bring in Jurco and Tokarski late in the season for a Calder Cup run were brilliant too, Tokarski ended up with something like an 11-0 record as a Checker.

Checkers ability to go with alternating goalies in the playoffs was a huge advantage, especially with the AHL's compressed schedule of back-to-backs.

Chicago announcers were commenting about how it didn't seem to matter who the Checkers had in goal while their goaltender was playing X games in Y days.

That's honestly something that has always puzzled me about the AHL playoffs. It's a development league, so virtually every team has a goaltender rotation in place for the regular season. Rare is the AHL team with a starting goaltender playing 60+ games and a backup playing 20-something. Even in Charlotte where their setup got messed up by Darling going walkabout and a capable "backup" in Tokarski only joining the roster at the deadline, Ned only played +/- 50 games. Given that the AHL schedules feature a ton of weekend back to back games, and that it's not that common to see these keepers playing both ends of those sets, how come we get the playoffs and figure that these guys are fine with all the back to backs? Seems to me that goaltending depth was a major factor in teams making the post season in the first place, so you'd figure it would continue to be a factor ... yet everybody acted like Charlotte we re-inventing the wheel by sticking to their rotation.

All 2019 draft picks except for Tieksola, Slepets, and Rizzo.

SEVEN goalies in camp, including 3 camp invitees, and only 19 skaters.... wow.

2019 Prospects Development Camp roster and schedule has been released.

Goalie Samuel Harvey was the name I heard all weekend. He led Rouyn-Noranda to the Memorial Cup this year and was the backup on their 2016 team that lost the final to London. He’s 21 and played 5 years in the Q, all with Rouyn-Noranda, his GAA improving every season and his Save % at .930 and .926 the last 2 years. If Ned is going to be the Canes backup, he could be a good option for wherever the ECHL team lands.

The other camp invitees:

Jake Ryczek was drafted by Chicago in the 2016 draft out of Waterloo of the USHL. He played 1 more season there, 5 games at Providence before heading to Halifax for 2 years. He had 33 points in 51 games this year.

Anthony Popovich is another goalie, played 3 years for Guelph. His numbers were bad though, 3.29 GAA, .899 Save % this season. It smacks of a favor to Scott Walker.

Kameron Kielly played 5 seasons for Charlottetown in the Q before heading to the University of PEI. He had 34g, 40a in 65 games in his overage year.

Griffin Luce just finished his junior year at Michigan, he was probably spotted when Gleason was checking on Luke Martin. Good size, no offense, a total of 3g, 10a in 96 games.

Ethan De Jong just finished his freshman year at Quinnipiac. He had 10g, 15a in 38 games.

Noel Hoefenmayer played 4 years for Ottawa in the OHL. He has some offense, 16g, 46a in 68 games.

Noah Delmas just finished his Junior year at Niagara U. He had 25 sissy’s each of the last 2 seasons, but 15 goals this year came from nowhere, he had 4 last year.

Cedric Andree played at Ottawa with Hoefenmayer. In his first year as a starter, he went 34-5-2 with a 2.48 GAA and .910 Save %

Rizzo just got traded from Penticton to Coquitlam. He’s headed to college after another season in the BCHL and the Canes can’t pay his expenses or his eligibility is jeopardized, right?

That's the way I understand it... either playing in the CHL or accepting basically anything beyond the jersey at the draft from the NHL team and it hoses their future NCAA eligibility. He could attend, & fully participate in, prospect camp if he was invited, like any current college player, but would have to pay his own way.

Yeah ... we've been getting pretty good participation from the college kids since that rule changed, so if he wants to be here ... he will.

The NHL Network has the Summer Junior Showcase tournament on this week, Finland has 3 Canes prospects all playing well in Puistola, Honka and Killenen.
