I've always thought Rielly would be a great choice for captain too.

But Toronto's always been an irrationally tough market on defensemen, and if Matthews keeps dominating anything like he has been so far, you just can't deny him. As soon as he puts pen to paper and signs that contract extension, you've got to slap the "C" on his chest.

As for Tavares, the media talked all summer about him getting the gig, but he's never really been a consideration for me as much as he is living up to expectations. The reason Tavares is here in the first place is that he wanted to jump on board the hype train Matthews has been conducting for the past two seasons. If Matthews was just another good young player, instead of a phenom who's made this his team and put the franchise back on the map, Tavares wouldn't be here.

Wonder if Tavares' experiences with the captaincy on the island was enough to sour him on taking it on again.

Matty is the C. In every way. And he won’t be fazed the slightest by having it.

The broadcasts keep saying the Leafs are kinda small, like Ferrero last night.

Well, that's totally wrong. They are average height and weight in the NHL, per Mirtle's piece today.

Everyone keeps talking how matthews should be the captain but as I mentioned a few months ago, MR should be given sone serioys consideration for the captaincy.

Fuk that... Put the C on him before contract talks and let him know the organisation thinks it's his team (yea, i know he knows that they know that he knows).

Marner wouldn't be a bad choice for captain too. I might not name him first but he's shown nothing to me but great character. He's going to end up as one of the greatest Leafs of all time.

    5v5 xGA/60 (corsica):

    1. Dermott: 1.73
    2. Hainsey: 2.12
    3. Zaitsev: 2.30
    4. Gardiner: 2.42
    5. Rielly: 3.21

So much for Hainsey being the defensive lead weight on the Rielly pairing.

It should be noted that Dermott plays almost exclusively with the third and fourth lines, while Rielly plays almost exclusively with the likes of Tavares, Marner and Matthews. The consensus among the fancy stats crowd is that teammates are much more important than QoC.

It's a five game sample, but Rielly's performance is much like last year. He ranks near the bottom of the NHL so far on this and was very close to the bottom last season among blueliners with 600+ minutes (#188 of 195). Not so good defensively.

it's also weird that Rielly is an offensive minded dman who has no shot. the one timer last night probably surprised him as much as the rest of us. what I'm curious about is how many Norris votes he'll get because of the points he's going to rack up with this group. he should set another career high this season, I think, with the hot start.

whoa. Babs playing his back up in a non-back-to-back situation.

    old dog learning new tricks?

either way, this is encouraging. hopefully Sparks can bounce back from the Chicago game.

Wow, I'm impressed if this is true.

Perhaps a sign that Babcock is in fact open to playing Andersen in fewer than 65-70 games this year.

Though Sparks of course will have to do his part and play well enough that his team doesn't have to score a touchdown to get him the win.

If Sparks has a Chicago repeat I could see them addressing the backup role
