The ****ing Season Thread 2018-19

Why is there no question? Who is this mystery defensive depth that was traded at the deadline that is both better than Oz and Marincin?

Here's the depth defenders that were traded at the deadline:

McQuaid for 4th & 7th
Sieloff for Elliott
Beaulieu for 6th
Del Zotto for 6th
Wideman for some other scrub

Columbus probably wishes they hadn't traded for McQuaid, he's been a 43.5% CF and 37% SCF. He's been ****ing dreadful, which should surprise no one because he's big, 32 yrs old, can't skate and has no puck skills. The only reason his name was mentioned in Toronto is because certain mediots are convinced that we need "grit, heart, & toughness" to win.

Sieloff couldn't play his way onto the worst team in the NHL. He's also somewhat famous in Ottawa for taking a run at a team mate returning from a concussion and re injuring him. Just a shitty AHL #4-5 defender who happens to be a cheap shot artists

Del Zotto would be a nice piece, but he's not in our top 6 when healthy (even just when Dermott gets healthy) and at 3 million was way out of our price range

Beaulieu is hot garbage and also makes a legit cap (2.4) hit that we couldn't have afforded

Chris Wideman isn't better than Marincin, amazingly.

So our choices were players worse than Marincin, or a player better than Marincin (Del Zotto) who doesn't fit under our cap.

Everyone was pissed about not grabbing Jensen for what seemed like a cheapish deal at the time but if the asking price was legit and they wanted Dermott or Sandin + then that is where the conversation should have needed

And speaking of since the deadline

Why are we only looking at the depth defenders traded at the deadline? What about the other names that were not moved that could have helped?

And that list you provided of other contenders is fine, but teams like that who are more top heavy than we are (outside of Rielly) do not necessarily need to upgrade at that position. We have Rielly and then a couple of 3-4 types. And the rest are 5-7 types. Add 1 or two injuries and we get into a lot of trouble.

Let's say they acquired another top four d. Who would be scratched with everyone healthy? Certainly not Zaitsev or Hainsey. The answer is Dermott. Potentially a lateral move. They did everything they could possibly do this year with the d. Next year should be different though with Hainsey and Zaitsev no longer on the roster.

How are you supposed to prepare yourself for 3 key injuries? Nothing they did at the deadline could have prevented a drop off from losing Gardiner and Dermott and the best Marlies D that would have replaced them. You can't plan for that.

Its not realistic that they should have acquired 2 NHL dmen that are significantly better than Marincin/Holl/Ozhiganov at the trade deadline. You don't think Dubas would have done that if those trades were out there at affordable prices?

Yeah I always laugh at people who suggest they should have traded draft picks for #7 and 8 d. ****ing insanity.

But hmm what if the 7 and 8 d get hurt too? **** they need to trade for #9 and 10 d too!

When does it end?

Other teams lose key players and don't miss a beat.

The Leafs lose a few players and they have the worst week they have had since the 18 wheeler days.

But yeah, we are all set. I think it's all because of Babs and his deployment.

The Leafs didn't miss a beat earlier in the year with Matthews and Nylander out.

You can't evaluate the team or overreact to the worst 4 game stretch of the season. But if we were doing that, what they really should have added was a goalie. That is what has let them down most this week.

In 4 gp last week they had an .851 save%. Good luck with that.

Big difference between losing a key player and having your goalie tandem bottom out

The impact is not even close

I just noticed Willy's shooting % is almost half his career avg. Still on a 62 point pace the past 2 months with that. Not bad at all. 5.3 is uber unsustainable.

Our record has been meh since the all-star break. This isn't just a bad 4 game stretch. The goaltending has just stopped being elite so all of the issues we have had all year (even with a healthy top-6) are coming to the surface.

I think we will be fine. But to pretend like we could not have done better at the deadline given the state of our team and our window is just being intentionally obtuse.

The team was letting the goalies hang out to dry. We have been giving up primo chances this week and although the goalies have also stunk, it is disingenuous to place all the blame on them. That's what we have Zeke for.

HDCA in the last 4 games

TB - 12 with 6 goals against
CHI - 8 with 5 goals against
PHI - 9 with 6 goals against
OTT - 14 with 6 goals against

Avg HDCA has been 9

The roughest stretch of goaltending they have had all season besides this one was 4 games where they gave up 5/6/4/3 consecutively at the beginning of the season

The thing about stretch passes...the forwards have to be kind of far away from the play...we have the skill to skate the puck up the ice, which would mean the D had someone to pass to in our end.

Its disingenuous to make any broad conclusions based on 4 games.

Since the all-star break they are 13-7-3 (103 point pace). Thats a .630 pts%. They are .632 on the year.

Record is fine, but a similar record to last year despite
-signing Tavares
-Tavares and Marner having career years
-AJ challenging for the rookie goal scoring lead
-Kapanen emerging as a legit Top-6 winger
-Rielly having a Norris caliber season

Is kind of disappointing. Another year of development from all our young stars and signing a top 10 centre in the league, and we just haven't taken that next step which I think we all expected. We win games but never look overly dominant or organized. I don't know, the whole season has been disappointing to me so far.
