The Official Hurricanes Playoff Position Tracker

Re: The Official Hurricanes Futility Thread

if they continue the recent success and sneak into the playoffs that should lead to more ticket sales which means they could potentially afford more for Ferland .

But if they are 100% sure he cannot be signed at what they want then he would be traded. Of course that sends a REALLY BAD message to the fan base.

FWIW, attendance has been really good since Christmas. If that's all they're waiting for to spend some money, then they're already there. Of course, if Dundon keeps offering gut bucket discounts, that won't mean much. Sooner or later he needs to trust that a good team will draw fans willing to pay retail.

Re: The Official Hurricanes Futility Thread

post Christmas always has attendance going up , not sure why. Maybe because NFL is winding down? College BB is in full swing though.

It's ALWAYS the NFL that impacts attendance, never college. Been that way ever since the team moved here and it's the same for other markets with less than capacity averages.

Re: The Official Hurricanes Futility Thread

I can see the NFL impacting Sunday games or in cities with a team but obviously we have no NFL team. I guess the Canes don't complain about more people showing up .

Re: The Official Hurricanes Futility Thread

Sun Dec 16 vs. Arizona 13,051
Thr Dec 20 vs. Detroit 13,548
Sat Dec 22 vs. Pittsburgh 16,264
Sun Dec 23 vs. Boston 17,491
Mon Dec 31 vs. Philly 16,644
Fri Jan 4 vs. Columbus 15,346
Fri Jan 11 vs. Buffalo 17,199
Sun Jan 13 vs. Nashville 16.347

Current season average is 13,768 (that is ahead of Florida, Zona and NYI). 13,220 was the Canes average last season. 11,776 the season before that. Dundon has made progress here. Winning will keep up that momentum.

Yeah. I've never had a handle on the WHY. Just that it happens.

Re: The Official Hurricanes Futility Thread

Also take a look at the current NHL standings and note the "last 10 games" win-loss for the teams ahead of the Hurricanes. They are all on similar, if not a bit better, streak than the Hurricanes current streak

This is indeed why it is so hard to make up lost ground in the second half of the season as all those above one that need to be now overtaken and passed are also trying hard.

But the good news is that we are finally looking like those playoff teams, at least in the short-term range of the "what have you done for me lately?" last-ten-games data set.

Metropolitan:
Washington 5-3-2
Columbus 7-3-0
Pittsburgh 8-2-0

Atlantic:
Tampa Bay 8-2-0
Toronto 5-5-0
Boston 6-3-1

Wild Card:
Montreal 6-4-0
NY Islanders 8-2-0

Contenders:
Buffalo 3-6-1
Carolina 7-3-0

Also, there is almost never a playoff team with a negative GF-GA number...and ours is currently (-7). Everyone currently above the playoff line is positive, although Montreal is sitting at zero.

However, over the last 10 games played Carolina's GF-GA number has been positive (+6), so we are also making up ground on that front.

We're beginning to at least play like a playoff team.

Re: The Official Hurricanes Futility Thread

I like the comments that implied changing the culture meant stop being a cheapskate, and spend money on acquiring and keeping talent.

Look, I don't "officially" endorse harassing people of social media, but Dundon does sort of invite input on Twitter. So I say, let fire with your thoughts. And yeah, a big part of changing the culture here is "stop being a tightwad"

Re: The Official Hurricanes Futility Thread

fantasy FB does not take enough time to interfere with Canes games. or at least it should not

Re: The Official Hurricanes Futility Thread

I check my fantasy football team while at the game. I can say definitively that other people sitting around me (regulars or one gamers) do the same thing because I hear more fantasy football chatter at Sunday Canes games during the NFL season than I do hockey chatter.

Re: The Official Hurricanes Futility Thread

Yeah. You simply cannot underestimate the shadow that the NFL casts over all other professional sports ... except the NBA. It's not that the NBA isn't dwarfed by the NFL, because it is. But the NBA has done a wonderful job over the last decade or so of carving out its own deeply dedicated demographic.

Re: The Official Hurricanes Futility Thread

yes I know the NFL is really big. Amazing for a sport that has 11 minutes of action in 3 hours. People on the radio/TV talk about the NFL 24 hours a day all year long. The minute the season is over they talk about the draft for a few months. After the draft they just keep on the NFL.

As I said before the TV ads for FB reach a lot of people who don't watch much other TV so the ads still cost a lot. They run ads for beer, razors, trucks , tires, and Viagra. :)

for the NBA remember the radio guy who was here Bomani Jones? He said he was surprised the NBA was not very popular here. I guess he forgot about college BB here. I think a lot of college BB fans don't like the NBA since they see them as taking away most of the best players early.

It's also because college basketball is a LOT more entertaining to watch than the professional side, at least IMHO.

Re: The Official Hurricanes Futility Thread

At the highest level, yes ... college hoops is entertaining as heck. For the VAST majority of participating schools though, it can be a drudgery. Think about it ... you pour your heart and soul into supporting your SoCon (or Mountain West or Northeast, or Valley or whatever) school through even their best season only to go to the NCAAs to discover that the game is completely different at the pretty much semi-pro level that ACC, SEC and the rest of the Bigs play. Bomani went to college in Texas at a smaller conference school enduing a record losing streak before he came to the Triangle. Hard to shake that off.

But let's NOT derail this thread yet again ... BACK TO HURRICANES TALK.

Bomani Jones was probably surprised that the sky was blue here. Good riddance.
