Default Around the League - 2019 Offseason

    Bob McKenzie

    @TSNBobMcKenzie
TOR, more or less, has an agreement in place with Kasperi Kapanen on an extension. Not expected to be formalized until TOR cap (Marner) situation clarified. It will be a 3 year deal with an AAV in the $3.2M to $3.4M range.

Not sure about all the details but if the Preds retain no salary this suits Poile just fine.

Getting 9 mil off the books without taking salary back is something you rarely see

Desperate times calls for desperate measures.

Leafs will once again have no 1st rounder next year.

Also, Leafs will have no 1st rounder to use at the deadline to get a rental

They really had no choice. By far the best offer they probably got and took it.

Lots of teams have really improved. The leafs imo are not a sure lock for the playoffs. They barely ended above us last year. They may not need a rental

Oh stop. Barring a goaltending meltdown the Leafs are a playoff team this coming season.

If the Panthers get Panarin and Bobrovski they will make some noise, coach Q will get that team going.

They are the team I am most concerned about making huge strides this year.

I have Boston and Toronto at status quo so I agree that the Leafs are far from a sure bet to make the playoffs but I still think worse case they squeeze in as a wildcard team

I still can’t believe how low PK’s value has become

For Poile getting that contract off the books meant more than any kind of return.

Totally agree. We can talk about how we want to be smart about the cap and not pay 9M for Duchene because of what it means in 3 years from now but we also need to decide if we want to live in the moment and you can’t have both.

In 2 years Tatar, Gally and Dano come off the books for around 12M. That’s the time KK and Poehling need to sign their first deal.

I’m happy losing the others and keeping Gally and going with Duchene, Domi, Gally, KK, Poehling, Suzuki and Caulfield and Drouin.

Sound like a great 8 to me.

Danault is very well perceived around the league and turned heads this year.

I wouldn’t discount him so quickly, 50 point two way center

I read a few rumours that Poile would take that trade back and keep Weber....again just rumours but the fact he has already traded Subban can somewhat make it believable.

Weber had a better year than Subban last year and he was coming off missing a full year I don’t doubt MB can get some good assets for him.

Weber still generates offense and his mobility was much i,proved in the latter 15 games of the year so he seems to be recovering well.

We know he’s a beast in the gym so I expect a big year from Weber

NHL Trade Grades: Why the Devils were able to acquire P.K. Subban without breaking the bank

Another thing that scared off potentially interested teams is the perception he’s declining as a player on the ice as he enters his 30s. It showed up in his point production – he averaged 0.49 points per game last season, the lowest since he was 22. According to data from Micah Blake McCurdy, he’s also not driving play as much as he used to.

Talent evaluators have also noted a decline in Subban’s skating.

“Quite a bit,” texted an NHL executive on Saturday.

    Said one coach: “Can’t skate.”

And an NHL scout added: “I think his game has fallen off.”
