Don't believe we could count on enough games out of McElhinney to support a Nedeljkovic/McElhinney combination.

More likely a Mrazek/Nedeljkovic combo where Nedeljkovic could play a more classic back-up role and/or starter during a Mrazek injury stint.

Mrazek I can see being re-signed here. But I'd be open to trying something else, as well.

Prior to the Canes making the postseason when the Canes were looking at the usual #15 or #16 overall pick, the prediction was that the Canes were going to pick Cole Caulfield, projected to be the next Marty St. Louis. the highest ranked goaltender, Spencer Knight, was expected to go 18th or lower. Since then, Caulfield's stock has risen as high as 8th overall, and Knight is predicted to go to the Panthers at #13.

Right now, the Canes are projected to take Jakob Pelletier at #29, however if the Blues advance, the Canes will drop to the 28th pick. Id strongly consider selecting Knight if he's still available by the time the Canes pick. If not, Isaiah Saville should be available at 36/37 and Mads Søgaard should be available at 60. I'd really like one of those three guys in our system. Pyotr Kochetkov is another intriguing one.

I'd also try to go for the Mrazek/Ned tandem if possible. Mac/Ned would easily turn into a situation where Ned becomes the de facto starter, and he needs a year as the backup first.

I thought this was the case, but apparently Nedeljkovic has one more season before he has to clear waivers in '20-'21 to be sent down to the AHL.

You might be on to something with Spencer Knight, the Canes might even want to consider moving up a bit to select Knight and use one of those excess second round picks if he is still there in that 18-25 range of the draft. By all accounts Knight is the real deal when it comes to a true elite goaltending prospect, and I realize drafting goalies in the first round is always a bit of a crap shoot.

If we have a chance to move up and take a solid USA National Development Program goalie like Spencer Knight in the first round, I'm good with spending the assets to do so.

Judicious second, third, and fourth round drafting can support the forward and defenseman depth component objective. But the real upgrades in those ranks are going to come from trades that bring in a closer age-match and experience factor to match the core.

Nedeljkovic may bridge us through and even turn out to be our own homegrown Mrazek. But the org could definitely use a goalie-of-the-future right now.

Time to start taking some serious swings at fulfilling that objective.

Interesting analysis as to what it might cost to trade up.

For instance, value between our first-round 28 OA pick and needing to be at maybe 18 OA to snag Knight plots to be around a 9 to 10 point differential on their scale.

And the value of each of our extra second-rounders (36 OA from Buffalo and 37 OA from NYR) is around 10+ points.

So one of those extra second-rounders, perhaps with a minor prospect sweetener (if needed for GM face-saving), might do the trick.

Nope. Ned and Josh Wesley were the last of the Plymouth Whalers, drafted in 2014. Ned started in Plymouth as a 16 year old.

Wesley came out of the U-17 NTDP before going to Plymouth. We’ve had others too; Justin Faulk and Jerk Johnson were drafted out of that program.

He still has 1 left on his deal with Lulea, so if he plays here next year, the Canes would have to pay a fee to Lulea and the SHL.

Yep, he's way too small unless he's ridiculously talented. Which I've seen no hint of. Likely Beans replacement?

Let’s not get too caught up in the size of mighty mite defensemen...the two shrimps on the Bruins blue line Clifton and Krug got the better of the Canes and seem to be doing alright against the Blues too!
