Man U vs Juve should be fun. LOTS of big name player crossover ... lots of star power ... LOTS of ego on the line.

AEK Athens 0-2 Bayern Munich
Ajax 1-0 Benfica
Hoffenheim 3-3 Lyon
Shakhtar 0-3 Man City
Real Madrid 2-1 Viktoria Plzen
Roma 3-0 CSKA Moscow
Young Boys 1-1 Valencia
Man U 0-1 Juventus The score was close but Man U didn’t really threaten until late and only had 2 shots on goal. Man U was late to the stadium again, Mourinho got out of the bus and walked.
Brugge 1-1 Monaco
Borussia Dortmund 4-0 Atletico Madrid
PSV Eindhoven 2-2 Spurs. PSV equalized late after Lloris was sent off. Spurs are in a bit of trouble with only 1 point.
Barcelona 2-0 Inter
Liverpool 4-0 Red Star Belgrade
PSG 2-2 Napoli
Galatasaray 0-0 Schalke
Lokomotiv Moscow 1-3 Porto

Dortmund, Barcelona and Juve are perfect through 3 matches. Porto, Ajax and Bayern have 2 wins and a draw.

Weird to see Dortmund playing so well in UCL, because they've been really scuffling along in the Bundesliga this year. They're stuck in 4th or 5th and have a huge pile of uninspired draws.

IIRC, they did that a few ears ago too...cruising in the UCL and a bottom half team in the Bundesliga. The best example of that was Leicester. Through 3 match days, they were perfect while only having 8 points through 8 or 9 matches in the Prem.

Yeah. They were in that cycle under Klopp. They made big noise in the Champions League and then had to play furious catch up in the domestic league in the late winter and spring just to keep qualifying.

Match Day 4:

Monaco 0-4 Brugge
Atletico Madrid 2-0 Borussia Dortmund
Inter 1-1 Barcelona
Spurs 2-1 PSV Eindhoven
Red Star Belgrade 2-0 Liverpool
Napoli 1-1 PSG

Benfica 1-1 Ajax
Bayern Munich 2-0 AEK Athens
Man City 6-0 Shakhtar Donetsk
Lyon 2-2 Hoffenheim
Viktoria Plzen 0-5 Real Madrid
CSKA Moscow 1-2 Roma

Crazy final day of group play today. If you have a chance, google Thomas Muller and check out the straight red he got against Ajax. Criminal. A multi-game ban would be deserved.

Group Stage complete, here is the finishing order:

Group A: Borussia Dortmund, Atletico Madrid, Brugge, Monaco
Group B: Barcelona, Spurs, Inter, PSV Eindhoven
Group C: PSV, Liverpool, Napoli, Red Star Belgrade
Group D: Porto, Schalke, Galatasaray, Lokomotiv Moscow
Group E: Bayern Munich, Ajax, Benfica, AEK Athens
Group F: Man City, Lyon, Shakhtar Donetsk, Hoffenheim
Group G: Real Madrid, Roma, Viktoria Plzen, CSKA Moscow
Group H: Juventus, Man U, Valencia, Young Boys

Dortmund, Spurs and Liverpool all advanced on tiebreakers. AEK Athens didn’t earn a point and scored only 2 goals. Porto earned the most points with 16. The round of 16 draw and Europa League draws are Monday.

Good on Spurs, I guess. Some feel good cases in the 2nd slots with them, Napoli, Ajax, Lyon and Schalke kind of representing the forgotten greats or the second tier in their leagues.

Round of 16 draw:

Schalke v. Man City
Atletico Madrid v.Juventus
Man U v. PSG
Spurs v. Borussia Dortmund
Lyon v. Barcelona
Roma v. Porto
Ajax v. Real Madrid
Liverpool v. Bayern Munich

In the Europa League round of 32 draw, Chelsea drew Malmo, Celtic drew Valencia and Arsenal drew BATE Borisov.

Looking forward to Spurs/Dortmund and Liverpool/Bayern.

Oh, and Celtic are done like dinner. Valencia are well out of their league, their most reliable striker is in rehab and Brendan Rodgers is hanging on by a thread as they're mucking around in 3rd place back home. Once their Euro campaign is over, it would be a miracle if he's not canned.

Atletico-Juve could be pretty good as well. At the other end of the spectrum, look for Mourinho to try to get a 1-0 result at home then pack all 11 in the box at PSG.

Or somebody else. He got the axe last night.

Man U 0-2 PSG
Roma 2-1 Porto

Pogba was sent off near the end of the Man U match, he’ll miss the 2nd leg. He’s never played in Paris and won’t thus time either. I listened to most of the 2nd half on radio, sounded like a pretty dire performance from Man U.

Wednesday's action ...

Spurs 3, Dortmund 0

Real Madrid 2, Ajax 1

BAD result for Dortmund as there's little way out of that hole, and Spurs were playing short handed due to injury as it was. Ajax is probably thrilled to still be in contact heading into the 2nd leg even though they leaked the winner only 12 minutes after timing it up in the 2nd frame.

Dortmund 0-1 Spurs. Spurs advance 4-0 on aggregate
Real Madrid 1-4 Ajax. Ajax advance 5-3 on aggregate. The holders are out. It’s the first time they’ve been eliminated before the semi-finals in 8 years.
