MLB Dynasty League Discussion

In my other leagues, the teams out of the money all get a shot at the top picks (some leagues an equal shot, some a pro-rated shot). For example, in one league the last place team has a 20% shot at the first pick, in another they have a 10% chance (1 of 10 out of the money).

Keeps it competitive to the wire with no reward for tanking. As long as there is reward, there will be tanking..

Yeah, and it's a real catch 22.....because you want no "shifty" tanking, but at the same time you want the legitimately bad teams to have the best opportunity to improve themselves via the draft process.

Like I say, it's a shame we're not smart enough as a group to come up with a proper solution.....cause it's a shitty situation.

I wonder if we could come up with some kind of solution (would apply to both hockey and baseball). Maybe something like we have a lottery for the 1st overall pick (say the bottom 4 teams are involved), then a lottery for the 2nd overall pick (where only teams that finished from 5th to 8th last are involved). Then starting with pick # 3, we go upwards from bottom of standings. I just made that up on the spot, the #'s could be tweaked, but just to find some way to (a) prevent tanking from providing too much benefit to bottom teams, while also (b) providing an incentive for teams to try to play their best rosters.

Now of course, this way you could have a few mid-range teams tanking to try and finish 8th last instead of 9th last or whatever, but something along these lines could work.

Arguing over MLB draft slotting is hilarious.

Just take a look at the drafts and how often the best players aren't even in the top 5

in 2012's draft, Correa & Buxton went 1-2 but Michael Wacha has been by far the best player out of that class so far, taken 19th overall
in 2011, Gerrit & Hutlzen went 1-2. Jose Fernandez & Sonny Gray went 14-18
in 2010, Harper & Taillon went 1-2....okay, Harper is a ****ing pimp, but who wouldn't take Chris Sale (12th) instead of Taillon?
in 09. Strarbourg & Ackley went 1-2...some guy named Mike Trout went 25th.
in 08, Beckham (no, not even Gordan...****ing Tim Beckham) & Pedro Alvarez went 1-2. I'm not going to bother dignifying that with what else someone else could have gotten at that pick

If someone wants to be stupid enough to "tank" in a MLB league, that's on them, let them do it. I entirely get the idea trading off older players for the best young players/prospects/picks you can get , but there's absolutely no benefit in artificially dragging your score lower than it should be. I don't care what you think you know about 20 yr old baseball players, 95 times out of 100 you're going to be dead wrong. There is no benefit in drafting 7th instead of 13th, 4th instead of 6th, the vast majority of the time.

Yeah for me I'm just hoping to grab as many lottery tickets as possible at this point, which is what baseball prospects and young players are. I just haven't gotten a home run on anyone just yet.

Yep. Understand what types of prospects become impact players, gather as many of those mother****ers as possible, continually monitor their progress and pray.

To be fair though... this year there were some pretty big offers were made on the 1st overall pick and the players that were taken in the top 5 are very valuable. Tanaka and Abreu are already absolute studs while Bryant, Gray and Appel are valuable assets.

This was the rare season where 2 in prime international studs were available in the draft...and as good as you think Bryant, Gray, and Appel are right now, the sentiment is the same after every draft. If history is any guide for us, at least one of the three, and probably 2 will be at minimum disappointing and potentially just flat out bust.

As far as I can tell, I think you and Metal do it "right".....you traded your best players and got returns you felt were best for you future, while not going out of your way to bench good players or have illegal rosters, to artificially make your teams appear worse than they actually are.

Ditto guys like Killersweet & Tim Horton, who have seen their teams move up the standings significantly as a result of their efforts to play their best team possible.....versus just gaming the system to tank for a better pick.

I made the trade with Axl in hopes of a rebuild. But I think that trade has boosted my team this year so far. And I know my team is not going anywhere this year, but I refuse to put on a crappy team on purpose. If I am gonna get a good pick, then my good players better be slumping.

That's why I keep bringing the topic up.....even tho it has little to no impact on my team, it irks me that those guys who actually try to field the best team possible and play on the up & up, are the ones that get f*cked over the most by those that intentionally tank and/or game the system.....as they're the ones who get shittier draft picks than they deserve, in the end.

I don't know if anyone noticed but Blueman claimed Taylor Sparks who is a player just drafted this year. Not sure why that's being allowed.

Rookie game limit violations:

Killersweet:
JUAN LAGARES (163 GP)

That's it. Thanks everyone for keeping an eye on your rosters.

No worries, just did an audit Saturday because I had the time...was actually surprised there was only one violation.
