Three stories of goo.

Mmmm.... Dickensian hell.

The Koch brothers, they who put the douche in TeaBagger astroturf funding are up to their eyeballs in all of this.

Wow...

There's no way that shouldn't be stored in a controlled facility if it's that close to residential areas.

Just for reference...when equipment operators are dealing with coke, they're required to wear a half mask with hepa filters. Even sitting inside the cab of a loader or haul truck.

what is that and what does it have to do with the koch bros?

seems like the koch bros buy this byproduct of refining tar sands oil, refine it and sell it to china as fuel (reg's in the US... and presumably canada... prohibit it from being used as fuel).

Define "close" in Detroit. Close to well-to-do gated communities?

Hope it doesn't get hit by a tornado.

I don't know if there are any applicable environmental regs, but I can't see it being remotely good for air quality as the granules are quite small and can travel a fair distance on a windy day. I sure as **** wouldn't want to live within 4-5 km of a coke storage site personally. It's definitely an eye/ear/throat irritant.

Mexico as well, uses it as a fuel source. The rub with oil sands coke is that it's borderline useless for iron or aluminum production (which is what most coke goes towards) due to it's high sulphur content. The site I make my temporary home has a stockpile near the airfield that is probably just as high as the one pictured, but is likely ~3-4 hectares in area.

... and piled high on land owned by the sole proprietor of the only bridge between Detroit and Windsor: Matty Maroun.
See that line of blue along the bottom of the picture? That's the Detroit River, running past at about 7mph constantly, from right to left. It heads directly into Lake Erie, then, of course, Lake Ontario.
How's your drinking water taste lately?

Isn't this stuff like a charcoal? 95% carbon and maybe 4-5% sulphur? If so it's likely no dangerous to the water than any pile of standard construction aggregate. In fact I am pretty sure petcoke has been used as an adsorbent in the removal of heavy metals from contaminated groundwater.

I wonder what Ford was willing to pay for it? I'm guessing quite a bit less than they're asking, no doubt these guys went to Ford first to tell him about the video and offer to keep it quiet for $X.

why would Ford pay for it? does he think the guy wouldn't have another copy to sell to someone else?

Oil Sands coke is significantly higher in sulphur than standard coke. Not sure the exact %'s though. We're ****ing swimming in sulphur bi product up there.

yeah I looked it is around 5%....similar to some building aggregates so not really a groundwater threat. Dustborne I bet it's nasty...fine grained carbon is pretty annoying stuff.

I know the 41 year old idiot that was "supervising." He's in big shit now.

A 12-year-old girl is dead following a single car accident when the driver, an 11-year-old female, lost control of their SUV and rolled just outside of Mackenzie, B.C. on May 17.

Mackenzie RCMP, fire department and ambulance service arrived on the scene and discovered the 12-year old passenger had died as a result of the injuries sustained in the crash.

Their investigation also revealed that the 11-year-old female driver was driving a 1994 Jeep YJ under the supervision of a 41-year-old adult male, when the young driver lost control and flipped.
