OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

Would be nice if the Orioles become a dogshit franchise again. That 101 win season on a $60M payroll two years ago was a bit frightening. Framber is going to make half that himself.

Orioles have a lot of good young players, although they have downsides to a lot of them:
Rutschman has been trending down every year.
Henderson had his big 8 WAR year in 2024, but has been "only" a 5 WAR guy before and after.
Basallo, Mayo, and Holliday have all been slow to start their careers, although combined still don't even have a full season under their belts.
Westburg has been a walking injury list.

If they get them all to break out together again, they'll be back to that 101+ win mark easily, even if their pitching is only so-so.

It does sound like there's going to be a major showdown next offseason. Owners want cap, players don't. Stalemate = potential for lost season.

They need to get that figured out beforehand, or everybody's fucked.

There is certainly a way the cap makes sense - it works in the other sports, and baseball is out of control not only because of the Dodgers at the top, but by the Pirates and A's at the bottom. A cap also means a floor. Maybe the key is an NBA-style yes-you-can-go-over-the-cap but you'll have to pay for it, and you can't go over it exponentially. Also fuck all these deferrals.

Good luck getting the players to agree to that, though. The opposite can also work - you don't NEED a cap. But you can't really have a floor without a ceiling.

They're veering towards what happened in the nhl back in the lockout year, where there was too much pressure to get a cap, that it seems almost inevitable there will be a long disruption.
