OT: American Politics

Habsy you have to promise us that if Trump or Carson win the nomination... you will vote Hillary. Please.

I voted libertarian last election. Will probably do so again. I refuse to support either "side".

imo zakari is off the mark. isis is not he same as al qaeda. it has been able to attract militarized youth in large part because of the network of radicalized mosques funded by wealthy saudis. that is true. i don't think it is a heavily discussed point, but i suspect that some of the AQ declines are a direct result of recruits turning to isis instead. and a big part of why they have turned to isis is its territorial design, and territorial gains. it derives much of its legitimacy from its (so far seemingly successful attempt) to form a caliphate. the corollary of having territory is that territory gives you sources of (i) sustenance and (ii) most importantly, income.

a large part of what has drawn people to align themselves under the isis banner instead of other radical groups is some form of modern day religio-manifest destiny. they are fulfilling the scripture. and it keeps growing because it has places for people to live, sleep, train, grow food ,and oil fields and facilities (drugs) to finance itself.

if you take away their land you take away their legitimacy and their income.

but with that said, a protracted ground war aimed at taking out isis would just create a vaccuum that would quickly be filled up by al qaeda and other radicals.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

Instead of a 2.7 billion surplus, we are actually running a 3 billion deficit for 15/16.

:sleepey: That comes as no surprise. It is worse than expected. Every government that takes over the reins from the previous one comes up with that line or one similar. The Liberals can adjust their accounting and fiddle with numbers every bit as well as the Conservatives and, given the chance, as the NDP would do.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

It is a story that's as old as politics itself. New party comes in, and promptly tells the electorate that "hey, we're sorry, there's a whole bunch of promises we now can't fulfil because the old government left us in much worse shape than we thought." I don't doubt that the Liberals are playing this game to a degree, and skewing the numbers as far to the negative side as the ledger as possible to give themselves breathing room.

At the same time, I don't doubt that there's some truth to what they're saying. I did argue during the election campaign that the CPC "balancing" of the budget was an election-campaign mirage conjured up by the one-time sale of its GM stocks, and the liquidation of an emergency fund that is usually kept in reserve.

In fairness, the dodgy accounting practices of the Conservative effort to make it looked like they met their balanced budget promise, were well known. It didn't take the Liberals "fiddling" with the numbers to come to this conclusion, just returning to previous accepted accounting practices would have sufficed.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

yikes, corky's been going off the deep end since the election.

On the one hand, you have Mindz acknowledging Mansbridge's conflict of interest, but pointing out the whole PostMedia debacle. On the other hand, corky seems to have no rebuttal to this other than repeating the same talking points. And LGM and others indicate that yes, the CBC almost certainly has a bias.

Something else I will add that has not been mentioned (and a slight correction to the story as portrayed by Mindz), is that Coyne actually resigned not because the publisher insisted the editorial board endorse the Conservatives (he was okay with this, as this is industry standard), but because they refused to publish his personal opinion column saying that he himself (as an opinion writer) did not support the Conservatives.

That of course, is a great example of 'media bias'.

shit trump's saying

Can you believe the worst Mayor in the U.S., & probably the worst Mayor in the history of #NYC, @BilldeBlasio, just called me a blow hard!

@BilldeBlasio should focus on running #NYC & all of the problems that he has caused with his ineptitude, & not be so focused on me!

.@mkhammer, a Fox contributor, isn't smart enough to know what is going on at the border. @TheJuanWilliams made the point far better!

John Kasich was managing director of Lehman Brothers when it crashed, bringing down the world and ruining people's lives. A total failure!

Once John Kasich announced he was running for president, and opened his mouth, people realized he was a complete & total dud!

John Kasich fell right into President Obama’s trap on ObamaCare, and the people of Ohio are suffering for it. Shame!

Doesn’t help Kasich to do negative ads on me because he still has to go through everyone else - he’s almost last.

Kasich has already spent $6 million on ads in New Hampshire and his numbers have gone down. People from NH are smart!

Watch Kasich squirm --- if he is not truthful in his negative ads I will sue him just for fun!

I want to do negative ads on John Kasich, but he is so irrelevant to the race that I don’t want to waste my money.

John Kasich should focus his special interest money on building up his failed image, not negative ads on me.

Governor Kasich, whose failed campaign & debating skills have brought him way down in the polls, is going to spend $2.5 million against me.

Ben Carson is being severely criticized for being incapable of understanding foreign policy be one of his top consultants. Not good!

How does Ben Carson survive this problem – really big. Similar story on front page of New York Times.

One of the saddest things in journalism is what happened to the formerly great @AP. They have lost their way and are no longer credible

i can't believe this guy is seriously gaining traction.

it's idiocracy. just terrible. a lot of americans should be ashamed for letting this happen.

Said it before, but we are watching this movie live :

Idiocracy 2: The Life and Times of Donald J. Trump.

His posts look like they were written by a 14 year old who just discovered politics.

The Libs left Harper a 10 billion surplus so there was no need to fiddle with the numbers .

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

a) Governments always tweak their numbers to their benefit. The Liberals balanced budgets after pilfering EI accounts. The Conservatives sold GM shares (that weren't sold at bad price).
b) New governments always say the old government left the finances in more than a mess. It allows them to take a parting shot at the old government, and also helps them justify deficits and debt.

It's clockwork.
