Habs Select Mikhail Sergachev 9th Overall; Scouting Report

Passive aggressive one aren't you.
If it's hard to understand don't fret, it'll make sense when you get older.

You're the one being passive aggressive.

I said that he was the right pick cause he seems like a sure thing with big upside then you start asking why I wouldn't trade him for Fowler... and I'm supposed to understand wtf you're talking about? Fowler has been in the league for 6 years and still hasn't become a top pairing dman... how is that the same as a guy with big upside?

You said you wanted Jost and I wrote a post showing many comparables from the same league he played in and explained why I was happy we passed on him. I guess I should have just said "why wouldn't you rather have traded the pick for Beau Bennett?"

My other concern about this guy beside being Russian is if this small sample of one great junior season a good measurement stick in his case?

I would have done that trade in a hurry. Top 4 defenseman and a top 6 forward for a pick??? Any day.

Man... both of those guys barely qualify for your descriptions. Andrew Shaw scored pretty much as many points as Silfverberg while bringing a lot more grit and physicality. Fowler is an offensive dman who is pretty weak defensively... and his offense has been trailing off.

I wouldn't trade a top 10 pick for those guys. You can keep the pick and sign fairly equivalent players next week without giving up any assets.

There's no way I would make that trade. Button said last night that Sergsvhev will be a Norris Trophy contender in a few years. Silverfberg is a shoot-out specialist and Fowler is good but nothing special.

Prospects values are rarely higher than on their draft days. If Sergachev was a sure thing to be a Norris contender he would have been drafted 1st overall. We might actually be lucky if he ever turns out to be as good as Fowler one day. I'll take proven quantities over potential in this case.

Based on that you should always trade a top ten pick for two good but not great players,

By that logic you'd always trade your draft picks (besides top 3 overall) for 2nd or 3rd liners... that way you'd never chance picking a bust.
