The (Around the League) Playoffs Thread

There is no player in the entire NHL more valuable to his team than Karlsson. He's incredible.
I'm actually enjoying seeing three guys in Karlsson, PK Subban and Kessel being dominant and leading their teams when everyone told me they were just too bad defensively to accomplish anything. I've been raving for years defensive hockey has become laughably overrated.(They are fine defensively anyways).

Karlsson is the only one leading his team

One of the things about the Sens during this playoff run aside from Karlsson's dominance is that they basically added two top-6 forwards for free---one would be Clarke MacArthur, when he returned from his concussion hiatus, and the other is Bobby Ryan. I mean, sure, a guy named Bobby Ryan may have been physically present for their regular season, but he's gone from looking like one of the worst cap albatrosses in the league to a guy that's actually worth his cap hit in the playoffs.

Then there's Pageau, who went from a fairly solid, two-way third-line center in the regular season, to scoring at a 50-goal pace in the playoffs. And Derick Brassard has also stepped his game up fairly substantially, after it was looking like the Sens lost the Zibanejad/Brassard trade pretty handily in the regular season.

Even though they haven't had the toughest road so far, they're full value for where they are, and they're not going to be an easy out for the Pens. We'll just have to hope that the Pens can get some good goaltending, and that Crosby, Malkin & Kessel can go beast mode for long stretches.

i'm surprised people thought ziba wqs better than brassa4d this year. brassard was a possession beast and the only difference between them offensively this year were hot and cold starts, respectively.

yep to all the above.... and why the Vegas odds of a Sens series win was too good to pass up.

lmao.

pens spend the whole period in ottawa's end and outchance them about 10-1.

Hughson/Simpson: "FRUSTRATED pens are FRUSTRATED SO FRUSTRATED the pens are FRUSTRATED......BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD"

other canadian fans will never understand the shit we have to deal with.
Is this the first period you are referencing?

They had 3 penalties including a 5on3 opportunity. I think not scoring under those circumstances would count as frustrating.

With that said, Hughson is an absolute loser.

Bang on. Macarthur coming back was a huge upgrade in play and in spirit - the team loves him.

But the biggest difference is that Ryan is playing like a top-3 forward. He still has his moments, but he's a totally different player out there in these playoffs.

Anderson stole this one.
What game were you watching?

Despite fairly lopsided officiating, the Sens quite handily outshot the Pens. They had virtually no sustained pressure and kept Crosby mostly out of the game. It was one of the best road games I've seen them play this year.

Anderson was great, sure, but you have to be an absurd homer to think that the Sens were outplayed and he stole one.

Lopsided officiating? Which of those Sen penalties shouldn't have been called?

Sens played well but Anderson made a handful of massive saves. Like shots that appeared to be sure goals. Fleury played well but made only like 1 "big" save that I recall.

None of the Sens calls were bad. The missed calls were the problem. Bobby Ryan getting drilled from behind (admittedly arguable because he turns) is something we see normally get an arm up. The blatant Karlsson trip when he's behind the net and an official staring right at him.

But none of that even matters - because despite the calls going in Pittsburghs favour the Sens still out shot them and still kept the Pens from having much sustained pressure.

Goalie A making one or two more big saves than goalie B doesn't mean goalie A stole the game.

I do not want the sens to win but if they do I will win the top prize in my hockey pool

hot karl is awesome

I would love a Leafs goalie to still 16 playoffs games in one season. How they won it really doesn't matter to me and doesn't take away from the glory.

Same. A win is a win and once the game is over I don't care how it happened.

But if we are trying to evaluate the game I just don't know how anyone could see that as one that was stolen.

Despite the win I still think that the Pens are a better team - but the Sens really put up a good performance on Saturday.

true but I remember someone on this board, an old name, might have been 13cups93forever aka GilmourFan who said that the Canadiens 86 and 93 cups were not real as only a goalie won it for us. I agree with your position, who cares.

We didn't trade Subban re his defensive play. We traded him for the colour of his skin, his brashness and the fact he was not corporate enough for the uptight buttheads on the 7th floor at the Bell Centre

I also agree with Corksens though about "evaluating" and predicting future performances. If a goalie wins you the odd game, and that goalie doesn't normally do so, then you could use that as a reason why you are still getting against that team.

As far as worth though...all cup winners are worthy in my view. This thing is too tough to win.

It's feeling like the Sens are the team of destiny this year.

I feel like Anaheim would be a tough matchup for the Sens and would take them out, and yet I think Nashville is going to beat Anaheim but be more favorable opponents for this Sens team.

Man, if only the Leafs had gotten past the Caps. I wonder what might've happened.
