J Will Is Back

With all due to respect to everyone who has made some well-thought-out contributions to this thread, I don't think that any of us are close enough to the dynamics of the Canes locker room (or the locker room of any college or professional team) to extensively assess candidates for the captain's slot. What we see on the ice, at team publicity events and through the media represents the tip of the iceberg as far as the interactions among the players and with the coaching staff are concerned.

I'm pretty sure folks here have done enough extensive research to speculate. That's what we do. :worshippy:

:sarcasm

Look ... same deal with trying to evaluate how good a Captain a guy is. We don't know. We NEVER know.

Never heard anyone actually say they know. Kind of weird that this hits peoples sore spot. Whatever. From a distance it looks like J. Will would make a good C. The team changed tactics last year by rotating a spot with Skinner and Rask. It looked like they may have been giving a guy or two a boost with confidence by awarding them an A. See Victor Rask. So to say it really never matters is blown away by this seemingly obscure detail. As much as folks like to say, and say a lot, that there is no way to tell who would be a good captain is hogwash. IMO When you hear the management say this guy will lead the team in the locker room and on the ice, and will show the younger guys how to react in certain situations, you have to lean toward at least talking that this guy will get the C. No brainer here. Wow, touchy subject.

People sure as hell run their mouths like they know.

People also act like Captains and Alternates are the only leaders on a team, which is patently hogwash.

Yes and what else is there to do on a hockey forum besides give our boring, unqualified, amateur opinions on whatever the hell hockey related we feel like? Dog days baby... nothing wrong here. Never understood people who get offended - simply for having a different opinion or 'take' on an open subject AND need to be rude about it. Like don't like it, then take a healthy cup of u know what and just read something else. Otherwise, be more open to discussing on a forum dedicated to just that. Discussing hockey stuff.
Laugh?

I think the team should have traded J Staal 3 years ago. Am I not allowed to share this and the why's?
I think the team should change their blasted candy cane lame logo like YESTERDAY. Is that a problem here if you don't agree? Can you accept, respectfully - to disagree? Or must this warrant attacks on said amateur opinions etc etc discrediting etc....
Country club anyone? Same as with the hockey club evidently!! lol

You know what, for every theory, trade proposal suggested, every counter argument is wholely of personal opinion too. So, allow for the purpose of this forum please - or keep your grouchy know-it all and add nothing to the discussion opinions to yourself.

I posted an article to a hockey story, that had been re-released. Apparently somebody thought I was trying to share something that was not common knowledge. But it was. Fine. But do people need to attack each other or put each other down for having a different take? Buddy tells me I was lying when in fact - they didn't know that the story had broke already YEARS before. So keep that in mind when slinging your 'expert counter opinions' eh?

I don't see anything wrong with suggesting that J Will would be a great captain. The last ones we had, didn't seem all that interested in the job. Considering we don't have one currently now, going on 2 seasons... somebody like JWill coming in, I think its kinda obvious. When it happens exactly, and if he really does become our captain - nobody knows. However, he'd be a blasted good even best choice considering what we've had parading around here pretending to be captains the last little while.

Look ... this is the same opinion I've had on this topic for going on 20 years. I'm generally going to point to our lack of sufficient knowledge of what actually goes on in the room whenever this kind of things comes up. It's typically during the summer, but whatever. Awhile back the local fan base anointed Eric Staal a bad Captain based almost entirely on body language, lack of point production and personal opinion, while virtually every teammate defended the guy. In my opinion, as fans we never knew enough to say the stuff about Eric that is now taken by some as gospel. That's my take and I've got a right to it same as anybody who has ever wanted to disagree ... and most of you do. Which is fine. Keith Primeau on the other hand was labelled a bad Captain by his own General Manager. That's a different story, as was Kevin Dineen getting stripped of the C because he couldn't quit arguing with management long enough to fulfill the role. Those things happened out in public.

Would Justin Williams make a great Captain? God if I know. Probably. That "probably" is the only thing I'm really informed enough to say. I think as I always have that we fans make too much of a big deal out of the laundry and that if your team has three leaders then you're about a third of the way to where you need to be.

I have never said and will never say you shouldn't talk about anything hockey-related.

I respect most everybody here. If I was rude or out of line I must say I am sorry. Maybe there was one or two words I should not have used (hogwash) but I honestly thought to give an opinion. I am definitely not infallible and not an all-knowing entity.

Again ... no biggie. Everybody's got a right to their opinion and to voice it*. I just want to make it clear that saying something isn't worthy of discussion IS stating an opinion and IS NOT an attempt to squash discussion. Everybody should talk about whatever they want*. And everybody else should feel free to comment on it.

*within the guidelines and standards of the board, of course.

I was totally offended by the free use of vulgar words like "hogwash".

I think Stormy should be our Captain. I have that rare ability to look into someone's soul and see the real human. I also have Sherlock Holmes-like powers of observation. I was pretty much built for message boards. Revel in all I bestow upon thee.

LOL. It's hard to be humble sometimes. I think the main thing was taking offense when there was no reason. I appreciate the humor and levity. :) This is a special place for the fans of Carolina and I enjoy reading and sometimes adding to a conversation. Great place, great folks!

lol guys, sorry maybe I over stated a bit my very own...and being a bit crotchity yesterday...? Gotta love the internet - up there forever!! :) like I said, dog days eh??

Anyway, I guess I only brought up the subject originally just to say hey, now I think JWill would make a great captain and just to discuss the why's and possibility. What goes on in the real world whereas the Canes are concerned (inside the clubhouse, on the ice, etc) sure - we have no real feel and make a lot from our fan perspective. Which is a part of being a fan. Anyway, you guys know me by now, no harm no foul! And we all pretty much say what we think/feel regularly within rulez.

Interesting info you gave JB. Although I totally see what your saying about Eric Staal, I dunno. Sure we could have been wrong, but utltimately - he wasn't a good C no way around that unless you ignore the real results we had for how many seasons? I had no idea about Kevin Dineen arguing with everybody, that made me laugh. Would love to learn more about THAT!

For the record, I wasn't saying that there's anything wrong with having the discussion about potential Cs and As. I was just expressing my opinion that strongly advocating for or against individual players is a guessing game at best.

You said it better this time :thumbsup(22):

Hmmm...maybe so, although I really don't see anything in my original post...

...that should have set off such a reaction. This board is for fun; I am as passionate about hockey and this club as anyone, but sometimes I think a few of us are guilty of taking what's posted here too seriously.

Have a great weekend, Caniacs!

The Canes need a Captain this year. Enough of this rotating 4 A's. Let's get serious. That's for middling teams full of only young players. Williams, IMHO, is a great candidate (arguably the best candidate). If it's only for two years, so be it. After the lockout they can select another one. Get with the program Canes!!!

You are right. My bad, sir, I took that and made poo for no good reason and am slapping myself.

Actually - that's an intersting take JFG - cause he would maybe help the next guy to where the C, from our core guys, grow into.

Exactly my point. Since they took the C from Brindy there's been no other good example of what a Captain should be.
