I'm assuming he did that so he wouldn't need to use two players for one situation. Carerra probably should have pinch-hit there, but yeah --- two players.

Anyways, when Goins and Carerra are the options - does it really matter anyway?

Weird thing is that the Yanks kinda suck. Maybe this changes things for them, but they have been terrible for as long while now.
 
Seriously, whatever pills that Smoak is popping he needs to share. Now top-15 in MLB in OPS this year, 26 HR on the season.

If they keep payroll at its current level (or increase it like they normally do), they can definitely contend in 2018. Obv I would like them to increase it more, but i'm not holding my junk there.

With that said -- At least Goins, Barney, Carerra, Howell and Loup should be on the block too.

Estrada saying he would like to resign with the Jays even if he is traded.

I would love to see him traded for prospects - then resigned in the offseason by the Jays on a 2 year deal. Solid bounce back candidate.
 
Even with their standard issue modest payroll increase i don't see enough to add a LF, RF, SP, SP, and that's assuming 2B, SS, DH, CF are good enough.

We'll likely hear about how there "is" money, but they want to spread it around, which will lead to Curtis Granderson and Andrew Cashner or some such.

If they keep the payroll the same, we basically have:
18 (JB) + 14.5 (Estrada) + 13.6 (Liriano) + 10 (Grilli/Howell/Barney/etc...) ~= 55M to spend.
Of that, we probably need about 20M for arbitration raises between Donaldson, Stroman, Osuna, Sanchez, etc... So roughly 35M to replace 1 starter, 1 top/middle of the lineup bat, 1 5th starter, plus the regular depth otherwise. And then that's not factoring in that guys like Tulo and Martin get yet another year older, although we have enough guys on down years that our projections for next year should still be decent.

Basically, we'll need to actually find some good buys in free agency. Need to avoid FA moves like Bautista and Morales who cost money and provide very limited production.

Yeah, so, 35M wont cover that

In a perfect world they pluck some AAA kid from another org that can serve as a #5 SP, so no money needs to go toward that.

I still assume they will spread money around on shorter term deals
