Around the League - Regular Season 2018-19

Re: Around the League - Playoffs 2018

Cant wait to see all the posts about how the jets are a poorly constructed team, flawed and will never win a cup without a better offense.

Considering that the Jets never made the playoffs last year, and Nashville made it to the finals. One moved forward and the other had a step backwards...

Re: Around the League - Playoffs 2018

I'd argue Pekka Rinne emulating his inner Marc-André Fleury cost Nashville two Cups, but that's just me.

It's not just you. I think Goaltending is Nashville's current Achilles Heel. Their rise up front did not coincide with Rinne's peak. They will need to address the net quickly imo.

Re: Around the League - Playoffs 2018

This whole Vegas thing ,no matter how one rationalizes it, is simply unfathomable. Too absurd to even qualify as a work of fiction....and they may be pulling away from the pack.

Anyone left to fire in Florida over the call on Marchesnault and Smith? Or a bunch of other teams who had these same two players and others(Karlsson,Tuch, etc), for that matter.Somehow though, I get the feeling Vegas would have done as well with a bunch of other rejects. It may be more of a systems thing Gallant has going, along with Fleury.Truly unbelievable. And the fact 28+ other teams couldn't make it work with established rosters.
As Bobby Mac said the other day, Seattle will pay the price for LVs success, GMs are already saying they will not make side deals the way they did with McPhee.

Rinne's season was one of his best but was below average for the playoffs.. last years playoffs he was lights out but his season was so so... based on this, it appears that the Preds only go as far as their goalie takes them, even with the all star studded d-men...

Re: Around the League - Playoffs 2018

It's hard to win games when the goalie basically hands them over the opposing team, no matter how good your roster is.

There's no doubt in my mind Nashville was better than Pittsburgh last year and was definitely better than Winterpeg this year, but alas...

The same is happening with Hellebuyck in the current series. Hasn't been good enough and now Winterpeg's on the verge of being eliminated.

Yup your always flawed with the best young talent on the top 6 in the league with a wide open success window

GMs also say they won't give up crazy contracts to players until they do.

Anyway, good for Vegas, but the biggest difference there is the coaching staff. There is a couple of good players and a goalie playing out of his mind, but it's still not the most talented team out there. But they play very well and with a lot of confidence.

The difference between opposing goalies is often just one goal, or one post. Winnipeg hit a few posts and Vegas had some barely going the inside of the post (see winning goal last night).

But I don't feel that Winnipeg has been much better overall than Vegas in this series. Vegas is containing their offense pretty good, much better than Nashville did.

The exact same arguments made against nashville last series can be made against Winnipeg this series.

No secondary scoring.

Poor goaltending.

Defense not helping on offense.

Best team in the playoffs falling to a team below them in the standings.

Yet for some reason, I think Winnipeg gets a pass.

Vegas has the midas touch. Insane capitalizing on scoring chances and opponents giveaways .

Coaching is one thing but this team is like your starting lineup in MLB going .400 all year , its beyond insane .

Nashville`s problem is secondary scoring . Except Forsberg your missing another game breaking creative scorer.

It was obvious in the finals and against the Peg this year . On radio talk shows most analysts I hear all said said the same thing .

" Can Nashville score enough goals" . In 3 of your losses you scored 4 goals and many on your top 6 didnt contribute enough .

Scheiffle, Laine , Wheeler , Ehlers Connor is >>>> than your big 5

Regardless if they are not producing or not the talent level and game breaking capability is not the same .

still bitter ? :) At the beginning of the season the Jets were not favorites to win the Cup, the Preds were.. next season the expectations put on the Jets will be higher...

I don’t entirely agree with this...

Pens had a borderline AHL defense and still won the Cup....Preds just couldn’t score, and this year was no different.

In today’s NHL, offense wins Championships. Tampa, Caps, Jets have lots of it...and Vegas was also amongst the top offensive team this year (i believe in the top 10)

Yeah, they're all in the zone, and seems to have been all year. They're definitely playing with no complex.

Not really. They were middle of the pack in terms of playoff teams and had the 7th most goals scored during the regular season. That sounds to be just about right.

However, this is where the Preds (Rinne) wrote their own demise: They have the highest goals allowed / game of any team that made it to the second round.

what are you smoking? no reason to overthink it. Preds built a good team but many players weren't good enough in the playoffs. A guy like Turris was brought in for secondary scoring -- he collected 3 measly assists (and zero goals) in 13 playoff games. Bigly, Rennie went from a .927 reg season to .904.

try again next season

The timing is right.... Rinne is 36 and has one more year on his contract. Their backup Juuse Saros is 23 and has looked good in limited playing time the past 2 yrs and has a shot of becoming a starter.

Re: Around the League - Playoffs 2018

I know a team with a younger, better goalie that has a higher caphit who might be willing to get rid of him because of ka rek tur and @ e tood...

The preds and jets are largely on the same trajectory.

Nashville went from sneaking into the playoffs last season to the presidents cup.

Winnipeg went from just missing the playoffs to finishing just behind nashville in the race for the presidents cup.

If any team was going to knock them out it was Winnipeg. And it took 7 games.

Nothing to be bitter about.
