Canadiens acquire Joel Armia and Steve Mason

Armia was a top 9 guy on one of the best teams last year. It’s a good move at the very least.

This years UFA pool is chalked full of Armias

I watched the Jets games in the playoffs, Armia was good, he did excatly what you need a role player to do but I would have also liked to see the Jets pay up a bit more to take on that Mason contract.

Keep the 4rth and 7th and give up a 2nd rounder or at least 3rd

I don't know if he's a top 9 really, he's a defensive guy now because he never panned out offensively. They used him on the PK. Not that I really care, we didn't give up anything and as long he's dirt cheap.

For $1.3m in cap space that we're not going to use anyway... we added a couple picks and a serviceable 3rd liner that we can possibly showcase in a bigger role. Then either flip him for a pick or keep him if he flourishes enough in that role.

I don't think this is anything to get overly excited about, but it's free assets. It only costs Geoff some real life dollars and I don't care about that.

The more 4th and 7th round picks you have, the better chance you have to get lucky and one hits.

I honestly don't see why we even bothered helping the Jets in this situation ?

All this for a 4th and 7th rounder ? And we got a kid that's 25 but was never able to impress in the NHL ?

All what? It was free assets. It cost nothing.

Yup , plus Byron should net you a second or a third worst case

I bet this has more to do with the fact that the future #1 center of this organization will have someone he can connect with when he makes the jump to the NHL

As long as turnip head doesnt make another Alzner type signing with De Hann or some other overated player , these tweaks for youth and prospects are fine .

Need to find another 10 mil or so in short term cap money to take on for both assets .

Stay away from July 1-8 for anything other than trades for assets .

It’s an OK deal. The moaning here is a little overboard.

It’s not moaning, it’s trying to understand. If you’re going to take on salary then make it worthwhile. I’m sure other teams were looking to unload salary too. I’m just finding this move underwhelming and really just a move for the sake of making one.

It's not a lot of salary, so you're not getting a lot back. Would have been nice to get a piece with a bit more upside, Sure, but It's not like we're helping TB sign Tavares or something. I'll take the free asset in exchange for a rounding error on the cap.

Then why make a trade ? Why take 1.3M extra on the cap for a 4th round pick ? Keep the 1.3M and try to take on a bigger contract but get a 1st or 2nd rounder

Wonder if Armia now opens up a potential Byron or Shaw deal?

You don’t trade Byron. He’s proven himself a 20 goal man that works every shift and is willing to do what it takes... cheaply.

Shaw on the other hand should be moved.
