Game 5/82 GDT: Leafs @ Habs (best rivalry in hockey), 7pm CBC

You can hit Corsica Hockey and go through the table yourself, or just look at Zeke's post from this page

Career

McDavid (20.8): 152gms, A qoc, 3.44p60, 2.49p160, 57.5xgf% (+9.4rel)
Matthews (20.1): 86gms, B+ qoc, 2.97p60, 2.54p160, 53.7xgf% (+3.3rel)
Eichel (21.0): 146gms, B qoc, 2.49p60, 1.98p160, 45.9xgf% (-1.6rel)
Marner (20.5): 81gms, B qoc, 2.82p60, 1.98p160, 48.5xgf% (-3.7rel)

I should have clarified and wrote primary point production (which is a more stable measure of production less dependent on linemate/team quality than counting 2nd assists).

As has been written about quite a bit, Matthews gave up some offensive numbers last season due to Hyman's lack of hands.

Eichel is going to be a PPG player for a long time. But he's about as incomplete defensively/possession wise as he is impressive offensively. That Matthews is a solid step better offensively on top of being legitimately very good away from the puck barely leaves any room for conversation here.

If we don't want to look at career numbers and just compare Eichel's 2nd year in the league to Matthews 1st, it's still not very close:

Matthews: 2.49 P1/60 (5th among forwards)
Eichel: 2.12 P1/60 (29th among forwards)

and that's before we get into possession, defensive play, etc. Zeke's not wrong here, Eichel might not be a centre. Sub 40% on the draw, bad possession numbers, rough game away from the puck.

I don't think anyone is saying Eichel isn't pretty damn good.

Nope. the guy is going to be a very high end, borderline elite hockey player for a long time. The question is whether or not he's a centre, and how close to the tippy top of the mountain he actually is. Eichel (if he sticks at C) is probably more in the Getzlaf mold, which is a mother****er of a hockey player but only really dabbled with the true elite over the years. Matthews is probably more in the Malkin range, a pretty solid step above, but a step down from the Crosby/McDavid ridiculous level.

I should point out that those p60 numbers might make mcdavid look a tiny bit worse than he should in that comp because he does have some PK minutes mixed in there unlike the rest.

Legend:

Letter Grades = Quality of Competition measured by opponents' time on ice, Converted into Letter Grades for simplicity
p60 = points per 60 minutes
xGF% = Expected Goals For Percentage (i.e. shot attempt percentage adjusted for shot quality) - this stat is already adjusted for zone deployment and game score
rel = xgf% relative to team - also already adjusted for zone and score

(as per corsica, all stats other than ice time do not include empty net situations.)

As much as the Leafs should win this game, you'd think the Habs are going to be pretty desperate.

Meh. We're facing a team that can't score for shit right now. I don't see the problem with saying we "should" win. But yes, Freddy definitely has to be better. Also, if we could not take so many lazy/dumb slashing penalties.

Drouin's definitely scoring his first real goal as a Hab tonight though, isn't he?

Thanks dude.

As for Matthews being just a step below Crosby/McDavid, that's extremely high praise. Crosby/McDavid will probably be top 10 all time players when they're done.

Not sure why Marner would be blamed though. That shot looked pretty harmless.
