OT: MLB Thread

Don’t forget Blow Jays had the advantage of structuring a contract in pure bonus payment to maximize tax advantage vs American counterparts - unfortunately they don’t come close to the deep pockets of Dodgers, nor does Toronto have the Japanese community LA offers & proximity to Japan homeland..
He was never going to leave the West Coast. Jays were “Habbed” as they say. It was always Dodgers or Angels, I believe. He’ll also never be able to live up to that contract but I doubt he cares.

would that apply to a Japanese national?

His contract also has deferral of income. He will get paid until 2069...

We can't defer here.

Remember when a bunch of Expos players like Carter and Speier lived year round in Montreal? Then the Canadian tax codes changed in the 80's, the loopholes for pro athletes were closed, and they all relocated back to the States?

This is why Ohtani was never coming to Canada. As bad as taxes might be in California, Canada's are more onerous because the loopholes aren't there. Toronto is also an extra 5 or 6 hours away from Japan. Ohtani was not only never coming to Canada, he wasn't leaving the west coast. The Mariners had a better chance of getting him than the Jays.

They had the same "vision" as any other team owner. They wanted to maximize their profit when the team was sold. The never gave a shit about keeping it in Montreal. They just wanted to get a return on their investment and move on to the next thing. People don't buy sports franchises because they love sports. They buy them as an investment from which to make money. The money is what they love, not the sport. And if the team has to die or be relocated in order for them to see a profit then tough shit, sports fan. The money always wins.

If Jerry Jones could be convinced that he'd double his profits by moving the Cowboys to Saskatoon the moving vans would already be loaded.
