TRADE: Habs acquire Thomas Vanek for Collberg and second-round pick

The recent The Hockey News prospect report seems to agree with most of use here: they rank Collberg as a middle of the road talent behind De La Rose (26th in the NHL overall), Fucale (33rd), Tinordi (36th) and a few others. More info in the prospects thread.

De La Rose seems like a steal...should have maybe been a mid to late first rounder

Just read this on some hockey site.... an Islanders fan lol

Omg I just read the Montreal gm was at a funeral yesterday... We were ripped off by his secretary... Maybe Charles can hire her to take over...

That's what we said when we drafted Colberg. We'll see.

And Collberg still should have been a first rounder. Just because the guy was traded, before he's even 20 years old, doesn't make him a bust.

i still think he's a good prospect, just one where we had a lot of the same style of player in Andrighetto, Lehkonen, Reway, Thomas, etc....

The fact he was traded does little to change his status as a prospect.

De la Rose was kept because we lack players in the system with his size and skill.

a first round choice even though he had a whopping 0 goals in his draft year?

This has been explained to you countless times....

When playing against other 17 year olds at the under 18 WCs... he destoyed them.
When playing against 18-19 year olds at the world juniors.... he produced.
When playing in the Swedish Junior League... something that doesn't show up on HockeyDB. He proved he was too talented for that league.

So he was put on a men's team, where he got next to zero ice time. In the Allvenskan.

This is not unusual for european players (especially Swedes). Here is what other swedes have done in the allvenskan or elitserien in their draft years.
At the same age.... Anze Kopitar scored 0 goals in that league. After his draft... Kopitar scored a huge 8 goals.
Loui Eriksson.... 5 goals in that league as a 19 year old... after his draft. Didn't play his draft year.
Nick Backstrom (a 2nd overall PICK!!!) scored all of 10. And this is enough to go 2nd overall.
Patrick Berglund.... 3 goals
Lars Eller.... didn't play in the league.... 2 goals the year after drafting.

The mighty Erik Karlsson 1 goal..... 5 goals the year after being drafted.

nice pun

Possible, but the same is true of any first round pick.

Does he have potential to be more than that? Absolutely.

As for the Balej comparison, we got lucky on that one. Bob offered Sather one of Plekanec/Balej and Sather took the wrong prospect. Who is to say Collberg doesn't end up the other side of that comparison?

Sather more than got even with us a few years later.

Actually would have been better if Slats took Pleks. The Rangers would never have pursued Gomez so Slats would not have fleeced us out of McDo.

true, people likely would not be complaining about getting someone who should get votes for Selke and was captain of Czech Republic

Collberg is a typical Habs first rounder: he has the potential to become a serviceable third line plumber.
#dimadozen

Plumber? You've clearly never watched the guy play.

If he fails to reach his potential, he won't be third line plumber, he doesn't have a grinder type of game. If he's not in the NHL he'll be a scorer in the AHL or in Europe.
