Remember the idea that international sized ice somehow is more conducive to offence and wide-open play?

This tournament is doing a pretty good job of showing that's a total fantasy.

Probably on track to have the fewest goals and lowest goal differential of any gold medal team ever. Almost every game has been a bounce or two away from disaster.

The media gushing about the win over the states, when we barely outscored or outchanced them nbd our goal was just a point wrister into traffic, has been particularly embarassing.

Wayward DP

I'm with zeke. Yesterday's game was a toss up for the most part. And boring as hell to watch. Like, really, really, boring. That despite the fact that it was an Olympic semi-final match-up against our rivals.

leafman101
02-22-2014, 08:15 AM
They just haven't been able to put the puck in the net. Its not like they haven't been getting a ton of chances. Way more than their opponents.

They are corsi-ing the shit out of this tournament.

I can't find corsi measurments, but their shots for % is 66%.

Dominant.

Not a coincidence that the same people that predicted us to get blown out by the States are leading this ridiculous stance of not winning by enough goals as a sign of disappointment.

It's baffling, really.

hockeylover
02-22-2014, 08:51 AM
Yes, sure guys.

Being disappointed only four Canadian forwards have goals heading into the gold medal game - ridiculous.

Being disappointed a lineup with Crosby, Tavares, Getzlaf, Perry, etc has mustered 2 or less goals in 3/5 games - baffling.

This isn't that crazy - this team should be able to score. Luckily our defense is amazing. The forwards have been underwhelming to say the least. If you can still win gold, no harm done. But it wasn't that crazy to suggest this team can be beaten. You get involved in all these low scoring, one goal games you leave yourself open to a lucky bounce or two completely screwing you.

leafman101
02-22-2014, 08:55 AM
Of course this team can be beaten. People just seem to underrate the rest of the world. Canada aren't the runaway favourites anymore.

And they aren't scoring because they can't score and aren't getting chances. They are getting ridiculous amounts of chances. They just aren't going in. All these guys can score though. They are missing wide open nets, and tap ins for whatever reason.

Its not just the defense playing amazing. They have had the puck the 2/3rds of the game. They outchanced the US by ~30%.

And yes, being disappointed about Canada in the gold medal game, with a guaranteed medal is silly. Sorry guys. It is.

Like I said. They've had the puck basically the whole tournament. They've out chanced their opponents by an insane amount.

Its not like the forwards haven't shown up. They just haven't been able to burry the the great chances they have been creating. They've definitely been generating them though.

I don't see how it's ridiculous to call it disappointing that the likes of Crosby, Tavares, etc. haven't been able to bury their chances on non-NHL goaltenders like Starkbaum, Gudlevskis, and Haugen. These aren't NHL goalies.

Our forwards are pretty lucky our defense has been incredible. If we weren't in the gold medal game, I think there'd be quite a microscope on them.

Wayward DP

You can be pleased with the team's overall results while not being thrilled with a number of individual performances.

I don't understand this 'you can't criticize Canada at all because they're in the gold medal game' mentality.

They barely scraped by Finland, Latvia, and the U.S. One unlucky bounce in any of those games and it's a very different story.

Phil Kessel is almost outscoring the majority of our forward corps, combined...

canada hasn't been in a position where it has needed to open things up. though when they've needed a goal they have engaged the blueliners and created traffic rather than just work the cycle.

i get that you'd like to see more goals. but the truth is they easily could have pumped a few more, but just haven't finished. and even though they haven't, the team has been ridiculously dominant. few, if any, odd-man rushes against. other than 3-4 shifts in the US game they haven't been pinned in deep at all. they totally control the pace and keep the puck deep in the other zone.

This is basically exactly what Leafman just said. Some of the best players in the world not finishing against non-NHL goaltenders is still pretty disappointing. Even Crosby who I love... 2 points in 5 games? He's done that only once in the last two seasons.

leafman101
02-22-2014, 11:08 AM
Yeah, but how many golden opportunities has Crosby set up Kunitz for? He also missed two wide open net tap ins. He could easily have 5-6 points. Its not like he hasn't shown up.

Its like shitting on Kessel when he has a 5 game scoring slump. They are playing well. They are getting the chances. That is undeniable. They just aren't going in right now for whatever reason. It happens.

I'd be concerned if they weren't getting the chances and dominating the games.

Whatever though, don't like that they aren't scoring. No one is telling you to like it. They are playing well though. They don't suck to the disappointment of some around here.

the only forwards on team canada who don't have 30 goal seasons are duchene, benn and getzlaf (who has 29 this year). it isn't like these guys have all forgotten how to score.

as for their finish against non-nhl goalies -- they scored 9 against austria and norway. they 'struggled to score' in a game where they threw 50 shots on net, including something like 30 high quality chances, and a young goalie who is, at the wrost, a decent nhl prospect, stood on his head. it happens.

If I had to bet I'd still put my money on Canada. I've said that for the whole tourney even if I haven't agreed with all the coaching decisions and been disappointed with the production from the forwards. I just think not being able to finish leaves you open to being beat by a team that is either lucky or opportunistic (that quick strike offense). It's been fine so far, our D has been solid and picking up the slack offensively.

Dominating performance. Just perfect. I was definitely skeptical of some of the player selections, but this team was built for lock down defense and puck possession, so pretty impossible to criticize after what we just witnessed. Carter and even Bergeron who I thought looked out of place in 2010, played great.

And it pisses me off that Anaheim has both Perry and Getzlaf, and got them both in the same ****ing draft in the late first round. Those two are awesome.

Bait?

I was baited, yes.

Karlsson wasn't on the ice for a single goal against, point man on the tournament best PP and was tied for the lead in tournament scoring. Best defenseman in the tournament, and far from bad defensively.

I saw him get turned inside out multiple times, as per usual. I said he was bad, not Lundqvist... the fact that he wasn't on the ice for any goals against in a small sample size doesn't mean much.

And yeah, he was awesome offensively, as per usual.

I thought Doughty or Weber were pretty easily the best defenders in the tournament from start to finish.

Yeah, and I'd give Doughty the edge. He looked really good on both sides of the puck.

Doughty.

Doughty was a beast to Hot Karls sweet kitty.

Thought Doughty was one of the better defenders (if not the best) for Team Canada in the previous Olympics as well.

Watching Doughty play in the tourney makes you wonder how he isn't a 50-60+ point defender every year, challenging for the Norris, every year.

He looked way better and more dynamic than Duncan Keith, who is likely to win the Norris this season.

Playing in LA has something to do with it I'd guess.

For what it's worth, medical director of Finnish ADA says Bäckström can't have taken that much pseudoephedrine by accident: http://www.mtv.fi/sport/olympialaise...hinko-vaitteet

"It's practically impossible. The limits were changed two years ago because of cases like this."

"You can't buy Zyrtec D in Finland, but in order to achieve this level of pseudoephedrine you'd have to take at least 3 times the dosage recommended by doctors, and it's still not certain that you'd be above the limits."

"The most probable cause for this is that the athlete has consumed pure pseudoephedrine. It's widely available in the U.S."

Interesting.

Yeah that was mine as well, Metal. You just know Toews and Sid were saying "We know what we have do here. Let's take it home." All business.

I bet you also missed his back-check to strip Crosby away from the punk and the countless other things he did to relieve the pressure. You focus (on purpose due to bias) on the negatives and form an incorrect opinion as a result. No biggie, he was only voted the best defenseman of the tournament.

The IIHF guys generally like to spread the awards around historically, so I wouldn't put too much stock in that.

Of course you don't put much stock into it. Your boys folded up like a cheap tent and went home early.

Of course it's "just" the bronze medal, but at least you WIN the bronze.

If Karl was any position but Defence, he'd be one of the best in the game, but as long as a large part of his position calls for defending, he'll merely be a incredible skater who is money with the puck...but never one of the greatest defencemen.

from what i saw you could go Karlsson or Doughty as best defenceman in the tournament. Both were dominant, i probably give it to the guy who won gold, but hot karl is a fine choice. Selanne vs Kessel is a toss up for me as well

My "boys" were the two best defenders in the tournament.
