DALLAS — Dallas Stars centre Rich Peverley collapsed on the bench in the middle of a game Monday.

Peverley was later taken to a hospital conscious and the game between the Stars and Columbus Blue Jackets postponed.

The game was halted at 13:37 of the first period when players began shouting for the refs to stop play.

Peverley was rushed away as both teams and fans at American Airlines Center waited in silence.

The Stars and Blue Jackets eventually left the ice entirely.

The 31-year-old from Kingston, Ont., joined Dallas this season and has seven goals and 23 assists in 62 games.

Peverley has 84 goals and 157 assists in 442 NHL games with Dallas, Nashville, Atlanta and Boston.

Jiri Fischer all over again. Peverley was recently treated for a heart condition and also treated at the beginning of the season.

The NHL released the following statement: "Dallas player Rich Peverley is doing well and is in stable condition. He has been transported to the hospital. As a result of the emotional state of the players on both teams caused by the medical emergency, the game is being postponed. We apologize for any inconvenience and we thank the fans."

Peverley, who joined Dallas in July 2013 via a trade with the Boston Bruins, missed all of training camp and the Stars’ Oct. 3 season opener against the Florida Panthers after having a procedure to correct an irregular heartbeat.

Peverley did not travel with the team to Columbus for their game last Tuesday, one the Stars lost 4-3. He was listed as out for that game with an upper-body injury. However, Dallas coach Lindy Ruff confirmed after morning skate last Thursday that Peveley’s absence was tied to his heart condition from earlier in the season.

Per Dr. Salazar, Peverley was aware of where he was when became conscious and wanted to get back in to the game.

By the way Burg, there are a few posts in the Around the league thread on this. If you want to consolidate all here. Up to you.

Got to wonder about the NHL's so-called substance abuse policy when you see guys stroking out and having heart attacks. They all get regular physicals and are in peak athletic shape yet their tickers keep giving out.

The NHL has a dirty little secret that isn't so secret: players injesting mass quantities of pseudo-ephedrine before every game to pump themselves up, usually in the form of allergy pills. The recommended dosage is one or two pills a day and these guys are taking them by the handful before every game. If that isn't enough to give you an irregular heartbeat I don't know what will.

I'm sure there is tons of doping we don't know about... and it starts way before the NHL.

People like to vilify track and field and cycling but doping happens in all sports ;)

Perverley's heart condition have nothing to do with substance abuse. The guy was treated and went under surgery for a heart problem (arrhythmia) that was burned, but in some cases, the problem can emerge from another part of the heart. Obviously, that happened in the Dallas player's case.

Oh yes... its happened to like 3 guys (Peverley, Jiri Fischer, Kris Letang) since 2002.... Out of like what the 1000 guys who play in the league each year? Wide spread problem.

All three were found to have long standing heart conditions by the way, all of them something they had since birth.

But you keep wearing that tinfoil hat.
