Leaf Rumours

RDS(I know, I know) says Kovy and Atlanta aren't getting anywhere...Kovy wants...11 million.:eek6:

Not that I necessarily believe that, but you'd have to think we're talking about 9-10 million on a long-term(ie 8-10 year) deal.

Can the Leafs afford that? We know Burke will be interested, as per his comments on getting elite talent after the Kessel trade was made.

I don't know about that. If Atlanta is close to the playoffs, and with Antro and Kubina and Afino there, Kovy might just feel comfortable enough to reup long term.

I hope he doesn't, but I wouldn't be surprised.

Then again, it has taken quite a while for it to get done, with almost half the season in the books, so maybe it just isn't gonna happen.

Tough, tough situation for Waddy. When he traded Hossa, he wasn't worried about competing that year. If he trades Kovy and guts his team when it's on the verge of postseason action, and they miss the playoffs again, that's the end of him. If they're on the outs anyway, and can't get him to re-sign, he's gone for the best offer.

There's no way Kovy's even asking for $11M, and I don't think he'd expect it on the open market either.

He's gonna be in the $8-$9 range, imo, and even that is pretty rich, not sure if Burke would bite.

But if he's UFA, we have to go after him hard and try to get him to buy into our plan at $8M per.

10 yrs / 90-100 million gets it done I would think.

You'd have to be sure that Kessel + Kovalchuk is a good enough 1/2 punch upfront. And you'd have to confident that you can get a good centre without spending huge bucks. Because it would be very difficult to sign another big money player with those two making around 15-16 mill.

Not sure there's a handy Hossa for Heatley situation available for Waddell this time. He'll probably have to take a couple dimes and a nickel for his quarter.

Sign. me. up.

It might mean we can't keep Kadri one day, but damn, the prospect of rolling out Kovalchuk on one line and Kessel on another(and having them together with Kaberle on the top PP unit) is drool-worthy.

Going to be tough to afford a legit #1 centre spending that kind of coin on the two K's, though.

Stalberg - Kadri - Kovalchuk
Kulemin - Stajan - Kessel
Hanson - Bozak - XXXX

I could handle that as a top 3 from 2011 and beyond.

Well he can QB a PP.

I'd have a tough time saying no to that. It'd give the Leafs two of the best scorers in hockey.

I find it kind of funny that virtually everyone on this forum has seen Schenn as being shit this year - one of our worst blueliners - but they somehow think the league's scouts and GMs can't see it or think that it hasn't affected their view of his value. Truly funny.

The team is far better off holding that asset and developing him, as he will take a few more years to realize his potential. I suspect, however, that so many are willing to give him up in a trade because they don't think he'll reach that potential ... hence, more ironic humour that scouts and GMs would be thinking the same.

If Atlanta is forced into dealing Kovalchuk, people are really over-estimating what it's going to take to land him. Sure, they'll be dealing an elite, top-5 talent, but every other GM in the league will also know that the Thrashers will be dealing a player that is only a couple of months away from walking away from Atlanta as a UFA, and leaving them with squat. Not exactly a position of strength. And I guarantee that because of that, no team in the league will be willing to give up a young player of Kadri's callibre.

It's also possible Waddell might just roll the dice, and see what kind of playoff run the team can go on with Kovalchuk in the lineup. That franchise needs a playoff run in the worst possible way in order to try to get noticed in that market, and they could also go with the hope that a successful playoff run might give Kovalchuk incentive to stay.

People here are impatient, reactionary and short sighted.

Scouts and GM's can't be.

Generally, I agree that even fans on this forum have little of the patience required to see young assets develop and will turn on players who experience the inevitable setbacks associated with their development.

However, I don't think what they see/feel is nearly as different from what GMs/scouts may see/feel as you are supposing.

It is with young players. 20 year olds aren't expected to play 20 minutes a game regularly, and not make mistakes.

Luke Schenn was way better last year than most 19 year defensemen ever are. This year he is playing more like a young defenseman. Age isn't lost on people. Schenn is still a prospect.

Agreed.

Just like Colin Wilson, Cody Hodgson, Mikeal Boedker.

Lots of teams would love to have those guys.

Difference is Schenn has shown he can handle it big time.
