Leaf Rumours

what's funny about the 2003 draft is that the top-5 picks aren't very impressive at all. It's the rest of the first round which is awesome.

I think it's interesting how each of the top three picks in 2003 are all Stanley Cup champions.

Although I would certainly consider a player the calibre of Eric Staal to have been an impressive pick no matter where he was selected in the draft. A Stanley Cup title, 100 point season, Second All-Star Team selection, and six consecutive campaigns of at least 70 points is pretty damn good.

Staal
Vanek
Fleury
Horton
Zherdev

Really nothing special compared to any other top-5s.

What was special was the bottom half of that first round.

Getzlaf
Perry
Parise
Kesler
Richards
Burns
Seabrook

Almost half of the bottom half of that first round turned into stud impact players. That's incredible.

I'm not disagreeing with your initial point. I'm merely saying that an Eric Staal is a damn good selection at any point in the first round. Olympic gold medal, Stanley Cup champion, 100 point season. He's a stud. Getting Getzlaf at 19 was the best pick in the draft though.

Yeah, I agree that Vanek, Fleury, Zherdev and Horton aren't particularly impressive top-5 selections, but I don't think Eric Staal deserves to be lumped into that group. In a lot of ways, Eric Staal reminds me a lot of Mats Sundin. A big #1 franchise center who had one massive offensive season near the beginning of his career, and then every year since then, he's consistently been at, or slightly below a PPG/30 goal pace every year while rarely missing any time to injury and occasionally throwing in a 40-goal season.

I think in any year, that's counts as an impressive top-5 selection, particularly when he wasn't picked first overall.

only four can be perhaps described as true impact players: Thornton, Marleau, Luongo, and Hossa. That's good but not out of the ordinary.

i dunno, a top five winger, a top five center and a top five goaltender is definitely out of the ordinary.

Heh From Eklund but he mentions another source

Montreal and Toronto Dealing?

It was at one point unthinkable, but knowing Burke and Gauthier pretty well, I believe it is entirely possible they work a deal together. Craig Custance, in an ESPN Insider article this afternoon cited an NHL source who told him the Habs have contacted the Leafs about a defenseman.

please be komisarek, please be komisarek, please be komisarek.

That would be an interesting train wreck to watch. Pierre Gauthier would be tarred & feathered and tied to the back of the next VIA rail train out of town, and Komisarek would quickly become the athlete most hated by his home fans in all of professional sports.

Seeing as the "sources" are Eklund and ESPN, however, it's more likely that Burke and Gauthier haven't even talked all season.

What about Komi and Mac for Gomez?

Why for the Leafs: Duh, we get rid of Komi. Mac is the sweetner we can afford with the young crop of forward talent available this year. Gomez gives us insurance for Conolly and deadly playoff performer--should we get that far. Plus, we get rid of Komi (did I say that already? Yeah, but who cares).

Why for Montreal: Duh, they get rid of Gomez. Komi played his best with les Habitants and perhaps he returns to form on a team with even more speed than we have. Mac gives a team without much punch a bit more than Gomez, who can go back to fading in the background and killing penalties for us.

Lose the pickels and make it Komisarek's weight in smoked meat and you've got yourself a deal.

but seriously, I don't know of a forward on that habs team that I really would want... not even if it is a real hockey deal and not one for Komisarek.

I could see Franson going for a draft pick to Montreal.. makes both teams happy.

not like it will happen...but perhaps moen?
played for burke before

maybe you guys are taking gomez and a 2nd for a 7th so you can bury him in the minors for us!
one can dream...
